1 v The present invention relates to a hand lamp fo'r attachment to a battery, particularly of the it??? for producing ahigh-pow'ere'd beam, and wherein the battery employed is of relatively. large size, containing for instance20 cells and having a rating of 7 volts. Such batteries, are commercially produced in various forms, the battery j best-suited for the purpose of the presentinvention being a battery of generally rectangular form having outwardly projecting fiangesat its upper and lower edges, and having at its upper ,side' a pair of binding posts for attaching the lead 'wires, from the lamp. An object of the invention is to provide a lamp 1 having a supporting bracket structure adapted to be mounted directly upon the upper side of the battery and to be 'c'lampingly engaged with the je'dge flange thereof to thereby support the battery from the bracket, so that'the lamp and the "battery become a rigidly connected portable unit. iA further object is to provide a bracket having clamping arms adapted to clamp the flanges at two opposed sides of the battery as well asthe flange at one end, thereby effectually preventing accidental disengagement or slippage of the bat ter'y with respect to the bracket. 1 Another object is to provide a-carrying handle 'formed upon the bracket and so disposed that when the battery is connected to the bracket the jcenterof gravity of the assembled lamp and bat- "t'ery will be directly beneath the handle thereby Ydistributing the weight so that it can be easily fca'rried; Heretofore lamps of this type. have had {a carrying handle provided directly-upon thelamp casing so that the strain of the weight of the bat- "'tery-- was-imposed upon the connection between {the-lamp and the bracket, and where it was desired to dispose the lamp in atilted position, todi-rect its beam upwardly or. downwardly while it was being car-ried, this arrangement tended to "causethe lamp to resume its normal-position-due te -theweight of the battery. The arrangement of the handle directly upon the bracket enables "the lamp to be positioned as desired entirely independently of theweight of the'battery; It-is further-proposed to provide a handle so arranged thatthe lamp and battery may be tilted upwardly "or downwardly to direct .the light beam by, azsim- "plewrist movement of the hand grippin the "handle. Withthe. above and other objects in View, an embodiment of the, invention is shown inthe accompanying drawings,- and this; embodiment willbehereinafter more fully described with reference: thereto, andsthe: invention ,will {be finally pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings the lamp, according to the illustrated exemplary embodiment oifthe invention, comprisesa conventionalitype ofla'm'p unit including a casing to in which theuSuaIjIamp bulb, reflector, and lens. are mounted, thesejprefferably being in the form of a sealed b'eamr'efie ctor type lamp, unit. The casing is provided'lat lower side with. a, downwardly. projectinggape'rtured lugmember ll, rigidly connectedthereto, as by a. threaded, stud portion l2 engaged up,- wardly through an aperturedbearing portion P3 of the casingand secured by an interiorlyjdisposed-nut.

The forwardly projectingviarm of the bracket is provided at .itaundersideatta point rearwardly of the supportingpo'st' l5' of the :lamp with a hook-shaped flange 21. adapted toIJengageabout the'forward 'ehd 'of the flangeffl 'il he vided with a hook-shaped flange 28 at its outer end adapted to engage about one side portion of the flange 23. The other arm is provided at its outer end with a downwardly extendin bearing portion 29 having a threaded hole 30 engaged by a set screw 3|, on the inner end of which is swivelly connected a rectangular clamping plate 32 adapted to clamp against the side of the battery beneath the flange 23, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, to thus secure the battery to the bracket. With the screw 3| screwed outwardly, as shown in Fig. 4 the plate 32 is drawn against the inner side of the bearing portion 29, and in this position the bracket may be engaged with the battery simply by hooking the flange 28 with the flange 23 at one side, the plate 32 clearing the flange 23 at the other side. Thereupon the forward hook flange 21 is slid into engagement with the forward end of the flange 23, and the screw 3| is turned inwardly to bring the plate 32 into binding and locking position beneath the flange 23. A recess 33 is provided in one edge of the forwardly extending arm of the bracket to provide a clearance space for the binding post 25 of the battery.
Integrally formed upon the bracket is an upwardly extending hollow handle supporting arm 34 provided at its upper end with an integrallyformed rearwardly-extending horizontally-disposed handle extension 35, preferably having a rubber hand-grip sleeve member 36 engaged thereon. The arrangement of the handle is such with respect to the center of gravity of the assembled lamp and battery that the latter is suspended beneath the handle in a substantially horizontal carrying position. By a slight upward or downward movement of the wrist, the beam of the lamp can be directed upwardly or downwardly as desired with very little muscular eifort. When it is desired to maintain the beam of the light either upwardly or downwardly, the angular position of the lamp may be adjusted as desired by tilting about the axis of the bolt IS, the adjusted position being fixed by tightening the bolt.
The hollow handle supporting arm 34 is provided in its forward wall near its upper end with an aperture 3'! in which a toggle switch unit 38 is secured, this switch unit having the usual internal part to which the lead wires are attached and an external toggle lever, the latter being con- Veniently placed so that it may be operated by the thumb of the hand engaged about the handle. One conductor wire 39 from the lamp extends through an aperture 4!! in the forward wall of the arm 34, and is connected to one side of the switch 38, the other side of the switch having a conductor wire 4| connected thereto and extended outwardly through an aperture 42 in the side wall of the arm 34, being provided at its end with a connector ring 43 for connection to the binding post 26. The other conductor wire 44 from the lamp is provided at its end with a connector ring 45 which is connected to the binding post 25 of the battery.
I have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of the invention, but it "will be understood that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is: 1. In a hand lamp for attachment to a battery, wherein the battery includes a casing having a rectangular peripheral flange at its upper end, a
bracket member adapted to span the upper side of said battery, transversely arranged clamping means carried by said bracket at opposed sides for engagement with the underside of said flange at opposed sides of said battery, longitudinally arranged clamping means carried by said bracket for engagement with the underside of said flange at the forward end of said battery, a lamp unitconnected to said bracket, and a handle connected to said bracket and disposed substantially directly above the center of gravity of the connected battery and bracket.
2. In a hand lamp for attachment to a battery, wherein the battery includes a casing having a rectangular peripheral flange at its upper end, a bracket member adapted to span the upper side ,of said battery, transversely arranged clamping means carried by said bracket at opposed sides for engagement with the underside of said flange at opposed sides of said battery, longitudinally arranged clamping means carried by said bracket for engagement with the underside of said flange at the forward end of said battery, a lamp unit connected to said bracket at its forward end, and a handle connected to said bracket at its rearward end and disposed substantially directly above the center of gravity of the connected battery and bracket.
3. A hand lamp for attachment to a battery, wherein the battery includes a casing having a rectangular peripheral flange at its upper edge, a bracket of substantially T-shape in plan outline including a transverse portion adapted to transversely span the upper side of said battery and having clamping means at its outer ends for engagement with the underside of said flange at opposed sides of said battery, and a forwardly extending arm portion having clamping means adapted for engagement with the underside of said flange at the forward end of said battery, a lamp unit mounted upon the forward end of the arm portion, and a handle member connected to said transverse portion of said bracket and extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom.

A hand lamp for attachment to a battery wherein the battery includes a casing having a rectangular peripheral flange at its upper edge, a bracket of substantially T-shape in plan outline including a transverse portion adapted to transversely span the upper side of said battery and having clamping means at its outer ends for engagement with the underside of said flange at opposed sides of said battery, and a forwardly extending arm portion having clamping means adapted for engagement with the underside of said flange at the forward end of said battery, a lamp unit mounted upon the forward end of the arm portion forwardly of said clamping means thereof, and a handle member connected to said transverse portion of said bracket and extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom.
5. A hand lamp for attachment to a battery wherein the battery includes a casing having a rectangular peripheral flange at its upper edge, a bracket of substantially T-shape in plan outline including a transverse portion adapted to transversely span the upper side of said battery and having clamping means at its outer ends for engagement with the underside of said flange at opposed sides of said battery, and a forwardly extending arm portion having clamping means adapted for engagement with the underside of said flange at the forward end of said battery, a lamp unit mounted upon the forward end of the arm portion, and a handle member integrally formed upon said transverse portion of said 5 bracket and extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom.

A hand lamp for attachment to a battery, wherein the battery includes a casing having a rectangular peripheral flange at its upper edge and a pair of binding posts at its upper side, a bracket of substantially T-shape in plan outline including a transverse :portion adapted to transversely span the upper side of said battery and having clamping means at its outer ends for engagement with the underside of said flange at opposed sides of said battery, and a forwardly extending arm portion having clamping means for engagement with the underside of said flange at the forward end of said battery, a lamp unit mounted upon the forward end of the arm portion, a handle member connected to said transverse portion of said bracket and extending up- Wardly and rearwardly therefrom, a switch carried by said handle portion, a conductor wire connected between said lamp unit and said 6 switch, a conductor wire connected to said switch and adapted to be connected to one of said binding posts, and a conductor wire connected to said lamp and adapted to be connected to the other of said binding posts.
