D. D. DEFENBACH.
RAIL JOINT.
No. 251,030. Patented Dec. 20.1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID D. DEFENBAOH, OF LA FORTE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ELBRIDGE G. HAMILTON, OF SAME PLACE.
RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,030, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed October 8, 1881.
To all whom it may concern .Be it known that 1, DAVID D. DEFENBACH, of La Porte,in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fish-Joints; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to fish-joints; and it consists in the novel construction of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The object of my device is to produce a safe, reliable, and substantial fish-plate, which will strengthen and afiord complete protection for the rails at the joints. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fish-joint, holding and securing the ends of two rails. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the outside plate. Fig. 4is a plan view of the outside plate. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the inside plate. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the chairs or looking devices.
The lettersA A in the accompanying drawings represent the rails secured by my device.
, B is the outside plate or brace.
O O are the locking devices that hold the plates B and D, respectively, to the sides of the rails.
D is the inside plate.
The letter 01 represents the bolt that passes through the two plates B and D and across the ends of the rails AA, arecess being formed (No model.)
in the respective endsof said rails to permit the bolt to pas 6 and e are the parallel rods that pass through and secure the locking devices G O to the plates B and D.
ff are the beveled surface of the outside plate, B. gg are bevels on the inside plate, D.
i represents the nut on the brace-rod d, and h a nut on one of the parallel rods.
It will be observed that the plates B and D are beveled on their face from the center outward. The lips of the locking devices O C have a corresponding bevel, which fits tightly over the beveled plates B and D. It will further be observed that by tightening the nuts h h on the parallel rods 0' e the clamps O O are drawn tighter on the plates B and D, thereby making the several parts of the device strong and rigid. The central bolt, d, and nut i also materially serve to hold the plates B and D in position. Thus, on the whole, it must be apparent that the combination of the several parts described constitutes a safe and reliable fish-joint.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The chairs 0 0', designed to fit overa tie, and connected by parallel rods e having nuts h, in combination with the plateD and outside plate, B, having tapering ends with flat center to receive the nut t, which secures the bolt d, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID D. DEFENBACH.
