Description

' (ModeL) W. 'H. s. VAN VLEET.
WHEEL FOR VEHICLES.
Patented Dec. 18, 18 81.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. S. VAN VLEET, OF LODI CENTRE, NEW YORK.
WHEEL FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,005, dated December 13, 1881. Application filed May 17, 1881 (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. S. VAN VLEET, of Lodi Centre, in the county of Seneca, and in the State ofNew York, have invented certainnew and usefulImprovementsinWheels for Vehicles, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in wheels for vehicles; and -it has for its objects to provide an improved means of securing the felly-sections at the joints. These objects I attain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a wheel, showing myimprovement. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section taken longitudinally through the felly. Fig. 3 represents a detached view of the fastening-clip and felly in cross-section. Fig. 4 represents a detached View of a portion of the tire; Fig. 5, a detached view of the clip; and Fig. 6 a top view of the telly, showing the securingbolts.
The letterA indicates the telly-sections, and B the spokes, which are constructed in the ordinary manner, with the exception that the felly is provided with a peripheral groove, 0, in which the vertical internal flange, D, of the tire E sets. At-each side of the joint of the section the sections are bored radially, as indicated by the letter F, and with recesses G for the heads of the bolts. The fellies are beveled inwardly at their ends, and between them is inserted a wedge, H.
The letter I indicates a curved clip adapted to set on the inside of the telly. This is provided with elongated apertures K, through which the bolts L pass, the said bolts being extended through the bores F, with their slotted heads in line with the peripheral groove in the periphery, the vertical flange of the tire setting in the slots, so as to prevent the bolts from turning as the nuts M are screwed home to fasten the parts together.
The letter N indicates a bolt extending through the clip into the base of the central wedge between the ends of the felly-sections.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
the telly-sections A, having a peripheral groove and inwardly-beveled ends, the tire E, having an inward flange, D, fitting in the peripheral groove, the wedges H, between the ends of the felly-sections, the bolts L, extending through the felly-sections, and having their heads seated in the recesses G in the telly and held against turning by the flange D, the curved clip h avin g elongated apertures through which the bolts extend, and the nuts M, all arranged substantially in the manner described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the telly-sections having a peripheral groove, and recesses for the bolt-heads, of the bolts extending through the felly and secured by means of nuts, the said bolts having slotted heads, in which the flange of the tire sets to prevent turning, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19th day of February, 1881.
