2 Claims. (ill. hit-2d) (Granted under the act oi March 3, 18 83, as amended April so, 1928; 370 o. G. '75?) The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by-or for the Government for governmental purposes without payment to me of any royalty thereon,
This invention relates to a coupling device for producing rotary motion in a hermetically sealed casing.
One of the essential objects of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive but efficiently operating device whereby to produce rtary motion within a hermetically sealed casing without rotating or tilting and thereby weakening any of the wall portions of the casing or any member fixed and sealed thereto.
A more particular object of this invention is to provide a highly efiicient device of this character and to accomplish this by simplified means by arranging the mechanism so as to convert the rotary motion from an outer driving member di rectly into linear motion to a nonrotary shaft and to the part of a sealing member secured and sealed to the shaft, said shaft extending into the casing, and then converting this linear motion from said inner part of the shaft directly into rotary motion inside the sealed casing.
These and various other objects and advantages are attained with this invention as will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein the invention is shown in its preferred form, it being evident that other arrangements and forms of construction may be resorted to in carrying out the objects and purposes of this invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a vertical central sectional view of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
This motion transmitting device is disclosed therein as adapted for producing rotary motion inside a sealed casing In which is only partly shown. The device comprises a driving member ii exteriorly of the casing, which member is shown in the form of a tubular member containing a cylindrical bore H and being extended through an opening l2 provided in a wall of the casing. The member H is mounted for rotation on the casing in by flange means f4 engaging under bracket means secured on said wall l3, about said opening l2, and this member is arranged to have suitable driving means applied to its outwardly extending part I 6 for rotating the member.
iii
A flexible member I! is mounted across the opening it provided in the casing so as to close the opening. This member ii is herein shown in the form of a bellows which is positioned within the casing and has its outward end 98 secured and hermetically sealed by soldering means E9 to the casing wall it, around said opening 02. The bellows is thus collapsible and expansible but it is held against rotation in the casing.
A coupling member 2! is herein shown in the form of a shaft which extends through the inner end wall 22 of the flexible member IT, and it is secured thereto and sealed hermetically therein by soldering means 23. The outward end 26 of this shaft is in engagement with the driving member 9 l to be actuated thereby, and this is accomplished herein by having 'said outward end 24 positioned within the bore H of the tubular driving member ii, and using a pair of coacting means on said member and on said shaft, being herein disclosed as a guide tongue or pin 25 projecting into the bore i I in the tubular member H and engaging in a groove 26 arranged in a slanting manner around the periphery of shaft 2!. The inward end 21 of the shaft extends into the casing. Thus, when the driving member I! is rotated, the shaft 2!, which is held against rotation by its rigid connection with the inner end 22 of bellows ll, has linear motion imparted thereto and moves axially together with the secured nd part 22 of said bellows.
A n -iven member 38 is rotatively mounted in bracket means 32 secured in the casing. Said member is herein shown as a tubular member containing a cylindrical bore 3!, and also including an annular flange 33, while a collar 34 is secured on the member by elements 35, so as to engage the bracket 32 between said flange and collar and provide rotation for the driven member. The inward end 27 of the shaft 2| is placed in operative engagement with this driven member 3|, this being herein shown as accomplished by extending the round end 21 into the cylindrical bore 3| of the tubular member 3| and providing coacting elements on the shaft and on the member. Said elements are disclosed as a peripheral groove 36 arranged at a slant around the shaft end 21 and also a companion guide tongue or pin 31 projecting into the bore 3| in the tubular member 3| and engaging in said groove. Thus, when shaft 2| moves axially and in a straight line together with the end of the bellows, it imparts rotary motion to the driven member 3| within this hermetically sealed casing.
I claim:
1. In a device for transmitting rotary motion from the outside of a sealed casing to the inside thereof, the improvement which comprises a tubular driving member extending through an opening provided in the wall of the casing and being rotatably mounted therein and fixed against axial movement, a bellows having its outer end securely sealed to the casing around said opening to seal the latter, an axially shiftable coupling shaft slidably received in the end of said tubular driving member and extending through the inner end of said bellows and securely sealed thereto and fixed against rotation in the latter, cooperating spiral tongue and grooved means on said driving member and on said shaft to convert rotary motion of the driving member into axial movement of the shaft, a tubular driven member and joumaled means for mounting said tubular driven member rotatably in the casing in axial telescopic engagement with said shaft and against axial movement, and cooperating spiral tongue and groove means within the casing on said shaft and said driven member to convert axial movement of the shaft into rotary motion of the tubular driven member.
2. In a device for transmitting rotary motion from the outside of a sealed casing to the inside thereof, the improvement which comprises a tubular outer rotary driving member extending into the casing through an opening provided in a wall of the casing, journaled means on said casing exteriorly thereof for mounting said member for rotation in said opening, a bellows within the casing having its outward end securely sealed to the casing concentrically around said opening, an axialLv shiftable shaft having one end slidably engaged in said tubular driving member and its opposite end extending concentrically through the inner end of said bellows and securely sealed thereto and fixed against rotation therein, coacting spiral spline means on said outerrotary tubular driving member and on said shaft to convert rotary movement of the rotary tubular driving member into axial movement of the shaft, a tubular rotary driven member and iournaled means mounting it rotatabiy in the casing on said opposite end of the axially shiftable shaft inwardly of said bellows, and coacting spiral spline means on said shaft and on said driving member to convert axial motion of the shaft into rotary motion of the rotary tubular driven member within the casing.
