Application December 24, 1947, Serial No. 793,679
30 Claims.
This invention relates to a watchmans tour system and to apparatus and devices utilized therein. The invention more particularly relates to a watchmans tour system utilizing tour stations of particular constructions for attaining the primary purpose of insuring that the watchman properly completes his tour and in each tour operates the tour Stations in succession in a predetermined order.
In my prior Patent 2,376,389, reissued April 8, 1947, Re. 22,864, is disclosed a Watchmans tour system `utilizing a plurality of tour stations, the construction of the tour stations designated in the patent as preliminary stations and of the system being such that when all rof the tour stations are properly actuated in a predetermined relation to each other a routine signal is transmitted upon operation of a transmitting station. The operation of any preliminary station in other than the predetermined manner produces an alarm signal.
In the patent it is suggested that, with the exception of certain dummy stations, combination changing locks may be used in the preliminary stations which require for the successive operations of each station a different key and it is proposed to provide all of these stations with locks of the same type. As the Watchman proceeds on his tour with a given key, therefore, he may operate in succession the locks of all of the stations, changing the combination thereof from a given combination to the succeeding combination. In the succeeding tours, the Watchman requires for all of the preliminaryf stations keys respectively corresponding to the succeeding combinations in order to operate the locks of the preliminary stations. A series of keys for this purpose, of course, may be controlled by a supervisor to insure that the Watchman utilizes the proper keys for the respective tours. The patent also discloses a construction for the preliminary station which provides a key channel for releasing a key contained therein upon operation of the lock of the preliminary station.
While the system of my prior patent is eii'ective for many purposes and conditions and especially where the routine and alarm signals may be given in a central station under supervision of a supervisor, it is desirable for some purposes to provide a simplied system which may be operated by the Watchman alone. Such a simplified system may include an alarm signal which, if desired, may serve to alarm an intruder or, on the other hand, to notify a supervisor of faulty operation of the system or the need of assistance for the watchman.
It is an object of the invention to provide a watchmans tour system having tour stations operable by the watchman of such construction and arrangement that he must make his tour of these stations in a predetermined order.
It is another object of the invention to provide in such a system a transmitting station which may be operated only after the completion of the tour of the tour stations has been properly carried out.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a watchmans tour system in which the watchman is required to make his tour of the stations in a predetermined order and in which upon proper operation of the system and completion of the tour in the predetermined order a routine signal is produced, improper operation thereof producing an alarm signal.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a watchmans system having a plurality of tour stations constructed with locks of the combination changing type to establish a predetermined sequence, means being provided in the system which enables the Watchman to secure for the successive stations and subsequent tours the proper key for operation of the tour station locks.
It is an additional object of the invention to provide a Watchmans tour system in which a transmitting station is utilized which is provided With a combination changing lock, the proper keys in succession being made available to the watchman for operation of this transmitting station by proper operation of the tour stations in succession, thus requiring that the Watchman visit the tour stations in a predetermined order.
It is another object of the invention to provide a tour station of particular construction for a system capable of attaining the above objects of the invention.
It is a further object of the invention to provid a key magazine for a system utilizing combination changing locks which may serve as a tour station and Which is operable by the watchman to secure the proper key of a set of keys for the successive operations of the locks.
It is an additional object of the invention to provide in the tour stations, the transmitting station and the magazine constructions for insuring against improper operation thereof and against tampering by intruders or unauthorizedV persons and to insure that the watchman shall operate the system in the desired order and the desired manner.
In its broad aspect the system of the invention utilizes at least one tour station and preferfor operating the transmitting station lock. This means is actuatable by a key -o'f this set of keys to release the retained key.
Preferably the tour station is :constructed with .y
a key trap or channel which is yadapted to receive a key of the set of keys for the transmitting fsta-V Y ondrkey but means are provided which cooperate with the retaining means and With the means actuated by 'the' inserted key for eiecting release of the retained key only 'when the second key has been 'inserted in the channel and, as wen, the station has been properly operated by the watchman. 'It will be understood that the preferred construction of the tour station is such that, regardles's'o'f the order in which 'the Watch-v man carries but the sequence of steps in the operation of the 't'nirV station, he is required both to 'insert in the key channel a key oi the set of transmission station keys, preferably a key 'from 'the immediately previously loperated tour stamitting station lock thereby is changed, it is necessary that the Watchman have in hand at the completion of each of the successive tours the proper key for operation of the transmitting station lock which will effect the concomitant change of the combination thereof. This the linvention vaccon'rplishes and the fvlatchman is :required to'visit the tour stations .in the proper order in order that he shall have in hand the proper key for operation of the transmitting station when he reaches this station in his tour.
Although the provision of tour stations con- "structed with a key channel and retaining means tion, and then toY operate the tour Ystation which -inay'hbe accomplished by a key or other suitable means. Only by completing these cooperating steps can the watchman secure from 'the'key channel the retained key for insertion in the key channel of 'the .next succeeding station of the tour. Bycarrying out the operation of the several tour stations in succession With the se, guential insertion of the vkey from a preceding station inthe channel 'of the station being operated't'he watchman progresses to the last tour station before reaching the transmitting or final station and there receives from the key rchannel the proper key for operating the transmitting station.
` As willbe more fully understood from the description Vto 'follow o'f'the specific embodiments of the system of the invention in connectionv with the drawings, at the completion of'each tour the Watchman will have invhand a diierent transmitting 'station key, that is, the adjacent keyi in the' orderV of 'the keys of the set, to that which he had .in hand at the vcompletion of thev previous tour. Upon the completion, however, of a number o'f'tours determined by the number of tour stations associated With a transmitting' station, the watchman again will have in hand the same key with which he initially started the succession of tours. Since, as has been indicated above, at the completion of each tour the transmitting station lock is operated to transmit a signal or to make a record or for ether purpose and the combination of the trans-1.
fof this type itself is sufcient to insure the proper completion of the tour by the watchman for the purpose 'of securing the correct key for operating the transmitting station and to change the conibination of the lock thereof, it is preferable to combine with the key .channel and retaining means a lock operable lina forward and reverse movement which requires a 'particular key'ior its operation and the cooperation oi the key inserted in the key channel in Vorder Vto obtain re- Alease ofY the key for operating the subsequent tour station. 'The Iprovision .of tour stations of this construction affords a double insurance that 'the 'keys o'f the set oi keys .for .operating the transmitting station will'bemaintained in the .proper order and 'thatt'he proper key will be ,available at'the end df each of the successive tours vlfor operating the transmitting station.
In one aspect off the invention the locks of the tour stations are of the combination changing type which are operable by a supplemental @set of keys which may be different from that which is Yadapted to operate the transmitting station lock. In'one embodiment of the invention in "this aspect the locks of allof the tour stations may be alike and they may rloe set to the same combination at the `start of an initial tour. IThe Watchman, therefore, will carry with him a key which will change the combination `from the set combination to the next'succeeding combination and vvill rso operate the locks at each of "they tour stations. lUpon completion of the tour, therefore, he will have changed the combination of all Vof the locks to the next succeeding combination 'which willrequire a different key for the operation of these'locks in the next tour.
While rthe set o'f keys, for operating the tour station looks may be under control of .a super- 'visor from whom the watchman may .obtain the next key, preferably .in vaccordance with this aspect oi" the invention at ,a predetermined point withV respect to the .series of tour Ystations and the` transmitting station means are kprovided for containing this supplemental" set of keys. This containing means mayV take. the form of a magagine which -is capable `of .containing as a series all except one of theV Vset of keys and isconstructedso that .upon insertion of .the remaining key of Vthe set, a predetermined `key of the set will be separated rfrom thejr series lcontained in being suchas to vprevent tampering and improper operation, and insuring that the watchman shall visit the tour stations in a predetermined order and that he shall operate the transmitting statiori to transmit a signal or otherwise give an indication ormake a record at the completion of his tour.
In another aspect of the invention, the tour stations are similarly constructed, preferably with a lock cooperating with the key retaining means, as above generally described, the system in this aspect utilizing aset of keys suitable for operation of a lock having a predetermined number of combinations, all of the locks of the tour stations and the transmitting station being operable by the keys of this set. In this embodiment, in order to insure that the proper key shall be available when withdrawn from the key channel of each tour station for operation of the lock of the next succeeding tour station and for the voperation of the lock of the transmitting station in its sequence, a key containing means or magazine is utilized which is adapted to contain a supplemental set of keys which is the duplicate of the set which, as will be understood from the above general description, is distributed in the key channels of the tour stations. By providing the proper number of such magazines in addition to the tour stations and the transmitting station and the corresponding number of duplicate supplementa sets not only is the sequence of the keys of the set always maintained for successiveoperation of each lock, both of the tour stations and of the transmitting station in accordance with the change of the combination thereof in each operation of the lock, but the condition is insured that the watchman has in hand the proper key for the operation of the next tour station of the tour and, upon completing the tour, the proper key for the operation of the transmitting station.
The arrangement of tour stations and the transmitting station in relation to the magazines may be such that each tour station and the transmitting station shall have associated therewith a magazine. The construction of these magazines, as will be more fully understood from the description thereof in connection with the drawings, preferably is such that only one key may Ice inserted therein at a time and concomitantly only one key is separated from the series of keys within the magazine and conditioned for withdrawal therefrom. Moreover, the magazine preferably is constructed so that only a key of the set of keys with which it is associated may be inserted in the magazine for effecting withdrawal of the predetermined key therefrom. Means preferably are provided for insuring against improper operation of the magazine and for locking the magazine against operation except by the watchman who carries a key for this purpose.
In a further modification of the invention in the aspect thereof which utilizes only a set of keys for a single set of combinations of a lock and a supplemental set which is a duplicate of this single set of keys, the tour stations may be constituted only by magazines of the type above generally described. In such a modication the number of magazines required, in order that the watchman may obtain at the end of each tour the proper key for operating the transmitting station to transmit the signal or otherwise make a record and to change the combination of the lock of this transmitting station, will be equal to the number of keys (combination changes) utilized plus one. It will be understood from the more detailed description to follow of the invention in this further modication thereof that upon insertion of a key carried by the watchman from one tour station to another in the magazine of the station at which he arrives he will be able to withdraw from the magazine the key which may be inserted in the magazine of the next succeeding station to receive from this magazine the key which may be inserted in the succeeding magazine. This sequence of insertions or withdrawals of the keys in the magazines which serve as tour stations continues until the watchman reaches the transmitting station where he utilizes the key Withdrawn from the last magazine station to operate the transmitting station. The key utilized for this purpose then may be carried to the first tour station for insertion in the magazine thereof at the beginning of the second tour, each tour being carried out and completed in the manner described.
The details of the construction of the tour stations and of the magazines and the operation thereof and of the system when it is provided with signaling devices and signal transmission systems or circuits and other aspects and features of the invention will be more fully understood from the description to follow taken in connection with the drawings in which:

In Fig. 1 are shown five tour stations I identified as #I, #2, #3, #4, #5. Also in Fig. 1 is shown a transmitting station 3 and a key magazine 1. It 65 Will be understood that the five tour stations are distributed about the site in convenient or critical locations in order to insure that the Watchman visiting them shall traverse the area, to be sur veyed. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 all of the 70 ve tour stations are of the same constructions and of similar appearance and are provided with key channels as generally described above for retaining, as diagrammatically shown in Fig. 1, respectively keys III, II, I2, I3 and I4 of a set of 7s six keys. These keys hereinafter will be referred :to 'asf"white keys. `For the'o'perationof thelocks'ii of the'tour .stations diagrammatically Vshown in Fig. l, .a separate or supplemental set of six keys 21, "22, "23, f`2i4, 25, '25 is utilized. Five of these keys j'atfa .time are adapted normally tobe retained finseri'es in a magazine 'These keys Vhereafter Fwill be kreferred 'to as ithefyellowwkeys. The sixth key, which is additional to those znormally contained at any given time Withinthe magazine is carried by .the watchman who, upon visiting leach station, operates .the vlocki'l .thereof with `the ,yellow key in hand. "Thus, ,at each station in the Arespective' tours, .asshown in the right hand column .of Table I, .the combination Vis .changed to the next combination requiring a differen't keyfor the operation of the station in ,thenext tour. Intheright hand column these combinations are indicated by the .numerals 26 to 21,rcorresponding to-the .key numbers, the l,change inthe combination Vbeing indicated in the 'decreasing order similarly to Vthe order ,adopted 'for showing the ,change vin combination of the transmitting station lock. Thus, the tour station locks 52B will befoperated vby key 2E in tour i to change the combination from 26 to .25. Upon completion of this tounthe watchman will insert key 25 in themagazine 4l asshown in Fig. 1. By. such insertion, key 25y will be conditioned for withdrawal and thewatc'hmanwill withdraw this 1l key and use it during the next tour vfor operating the lock 28 of each of the tourA stations #I to #5. Such operation of locks 20 will change the combination of each of these locks-to the succeeding combination which corresponds to key24. Upon reaching the transmitting station-3 which has the magazine 1 associatedtherewith at the end of the second tour, insertion of key 25 in the magazine will condition key 24 for Withdrawal therefrom to make this .'keyavailable for use in from to be available for operation of the locks in the succeeding tour, that is, the rst tour of the second series of tours, which will correspond precisely both as to the white transmitting station keys utilized andthe yellow keys for operation of lock 28 `of -the tour stations in a .i
repetition of the sequences which have been explained above.
In Fig. 1y also is shown an auxiliary tour station 28 which may beofthe same construction as the tour stations I. .The purpose ofthe auxiliary station is to produce an alarm signal whenever this station is operated. The tour station 28 may be provided with a key channel similar to that of tour stations I for releasably retaining a key 38 therein. lIfhe key 38 maybe of such form that it is capable of being inserted in the keyway of the transmitting station lock and may be of the same appearance as though actually different from the ,white keys I8 to I5 inclusive element, as shown in Fig. 1, which may comprise a code Wheel 32 for operation of contacts 33. The code wheel 32 may be operatively connected tothe lock, not shown, of the auxiliary station 28, the contacts 33 being connected with an alarm signal device across the electric supply. The lock of the tour station 28 may have a keyway for receiving any of the yellow keys 2| to 25 inclusive and may be operatively connected to the code wheel 32 so that this code wheel is operated when the lock of station 28 is operated by any of the ,fyellow keys. It will be understood, therefore, that when the tour station 28 thus constructed and connected in the circuit with the alarm signal device is operated in precisely the same manner as any of the tour stations I not only will release of the false key 30 be effected but an alarm signal will be produced which may be immediately observed by a supervisor at the central oflice or signal station at which also the routine signal device may be located. This will enable the supervisor immediately to inform the watchman that he has improperly operated the succession of tour` stations.
which are distributed in the tour stations. It,
therefore, may be inserted in any of the key channels and may be releasedV therefrom in the same manner as any of the keys I0 to I5 inclusive. Upon release of the key 38 from the tour station 28, if this station is operated, the key 38 may be inserted in the next touristation, for example, the station # 4 in Fig. 1 .to effect release of the` key I3. The key I3 then released may be insertedA in the key channel of the tour station # 5 and key I4 may be released upon operation of the lock 28 of this station. As .shown in Table I, this key I4 may be used to operate the transmitting station as if the tour had been carried out in the normal manner.
The watchman may proceed after operating the transmitting station with key I4 successively to insert the keys in stations.#l, #2, #3, 28, #4 and #5, and he will bev able to complete this tour and operate the transmitting stationl with -key I3. Key 38, however, at this time will have progressed to and vbe contained Within tour station # 5. Upon completion of the next tour at the end of which normally key I2 would be withdrawn from tour station # 5 for operation of the transmitting station, key 38Will be withdrawn in its place. Even though the key 38 is insertable in the transmitting station keyway, it is of such form that it willA not operate the lock of this transmitting station in any of rthe combinations thereof. It will be understood, therefore, that at the completion of this third tour ,the watchman will be unable to transmit the routine signal and if transmission does not occur within the time allotted for the tour, such departure from the routine will be observed at the signal station or recorded on a suitable recording instrument operated by the signaling device connected to the transmitting station.`
The description above given with Irespect to the auxiliary station concerns its operation withf. out having associated therewith a transmitting If, however, an unauthorized person attempts to operate the stations, even though he succeeds in successively inserting and withdrawing the keys from the tour stations #I, #2 and #3, he will be unable to determine that auxiliary station 28 contains the false key or that it is provided with an alarm transmitting device. Ii the system utilizes an auxiliary station 28 without the alarm transmitting device 32,33, as explained above, during the course of the successive tours, the false key will progress to the transmitting station but will be'incapable of operating this station to transmit the routine signal. The absence of this routine signal within the required time assigned for a tour will indicate to the supervisor that the system is not being properly operated and that investigation is required. If in the auxiliary station 28 the alarm signal transmitting device 32, 33 is provided, immediate investigation may be made upon the actuation of the alarm signal device in the supervising ofce. It will be understood that the auxiliary station 28 may be located in any relation in the tour to the other tour stations and to the transmitting station requisite to produce the indication of improper operation or the alarm after operation of a desired number of tour stations or time interval.
It will be understood further that if the watch- A man desires to send an alarm signal in the case of an emergency, he may do so by operating the lock .of auxiliary station 28. In such case, it is not necessary for him to insert the particular key I2 withdrawn from station # 3 in the key channel of auxiliary station 28. Since the locks 28 of the tour stations and that of the auxiliary station '28- in the embodiment being described allA are operated by the same key of the set of yellow keys, the insertion of the white key in hand in the key channel of station 28 and the operation of its lock by the yellow key in hand insures operation of auxiliary station 28 and the sending of the alarm. The normal sequence of the white keys I8 to I5 inclusive then may be resumed after transmitting the alarm signal by again inserting key 38 in station 28 to release the regular white key inserted for alarm purposes. y

The routine andi alarm signal' transmitting devices associated with tour stationv #45' is generally the same as vthose associated with the normal preliminary or tour stati'onsasy disclosed in my prior patent Re. 221,864. Similarly, opera-tion of-'tour stations # 45 and #42, with the selector switch set as shown in Fig. 3' to move cam 5* from the horizontal tothe verticalV position withsubsequent operationY of the transmitting station 41i to move` its cam 5| from horizontal` to vertical, will produce a routine signal. As, many tour stations #411 #43; and#44 as is desired may beprovided' simply withgcontacts53, 55, 51 which are` shown in Fig. 2 forstation # 45.
I-t willbe understood' from a consideration of the system disclosed inthepatent Re. 22,864 that station #4f2'is one; of the stations described inthe patenti whichA when the selector switch '[3y is in the position shown in Fig. 2 operates as a normal' station but' which, may become a dummy sta-Y tion. Station 49 is another station which, when. selectorA switch 13'is in the, position shown in Fig, 2', is-x a dummy station but which may become anormal station by changing the position of the selector'switch 13i so'as to make contact with terminals-16, 17 and 1 8. Thus, inthe normal' operation of' the systeml disclosed,` in Fig. 2 whenA the. selector switch 13; ist in the position shown, station #42V operates'asv a normal station in which. onlyr contacts 68;, 6 9, 1I are in circuit. When the. selectorswitch isgmoved to engage terminals 1li,z r1-'and 18; station #4'2becomes aV dummy sta-V tion and station 49 becomes a normal station in which contacts 68, 69;, 1l; similar to those of' sta-- tion # 42 are in circuit'. Y
VIn each` oi"y these stations. #42V and 4 9 contacts. 80 are provided which are operated in thenormaL operation of the station by means of the key in thelocl:Y 20 to move the camr5| from thevertical.. position shown to the horizontal position at, 90 therefrom orV the reverse. When the selector switch T3 is in the positionshown. in Fig. 2, the. stationk 49 beingv a dummystation, the contacts 8D of station # 42 operatingas anormal. station are ineffective since the circuit therethrough is. open at the terminal 11. The, contacts 8 0. of staf. tionY 49, however, become connected in circuit with the alarm signal device at the central cnice if' the lock of station 4971's operatedto rotate its cam 5'! from, the vertical position shown in Fie. 2 tothe horizontal position at 90 therefrom. of' the transmitting station 41j when its, cam is The dummy station alsomay be constructed to contain the false key 30 a5 described in connection with station 28, Fig. 1. Operation of the dummy station by an unauthorized person, therefore, may involve not only the development of a false sequence by insertion of white key I3 in station 49 to effect withdrawal of the false key 39 and the subsequent arrival of the false key 30 at the transmitting station in a manner 'similar to that described in connection with Fig. 1, but may produce an alarm signal in the manner just described. Station 49, like station # 42, may be constructed to be operated by a yellow key of the set of keys utilized for operating the locks 29 of the several tour stations and effective to change the combinations of these locks in each operation thereof. The shape, size and appearance of stations # 42 and 49 may be the same as those of the other tour stations to prevent an intruder distinguishing therebetween.
Diagrammatically shown in Fig. 2 is a key magazine 1 containing the series of keys of the set of yellow keys except the key which is in the hands of the watchman. The construction and operation of the magazine 1 may be the same as that described generally in connection with Fig. 1 and this magazine may be placed in any suitable place in the tour. It also may constitute a tour station which will cause the Watchman to visit a particular location in order to be able to maintain the proper key sequence by insertion and withdrawal of the yellow keys to and from the magazine. If desired, the size, shape and appearance of this magazine may be the same as that of the tour stations and it may be provided, if desired, with a key channel not intended to be used in which an intruder or unauthorized person would be induced to insert a white key in the same manner as in the normal tour station, thus interrupting the normal sequence of the white keys for the operation of the transmitting station 41.
In Figs. 3, 4, and 6 is shown the construction of the tour station # 45 of Fig. 2. As above stated, the construction of this tour station may be substantially the same as that of the tour stations of Fig. l with respect to the key channel and the means for releasably retaining a white key and with respect to the cooperation with this retaining means of the lock 29 operated by a yellow key. As shown in Fig. 3 the tour station # 45 includes the contacts 53, 55, 51 shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2, the contact 53 being actuated by the cam 5| to control in cooperation with the other tour stations the transmission of a routine signal or an alarm signal depending upon the relative positions of the cams 5|, that is, of the contacts actuated thereby, in the several stations at the time when the transmitting station 41 is operated. Cam 5| is carried on shaft 85 operatively engaged by the keyway shaft 81 of a combination changing lock 89 which may be of the construction shown in'my prior Patent 2,427,814, September 23, 1947. The shaft 85 and the lock 89 are suitably supported in a casing 9|. The construction and arrangement of the parts in the tour station # 45 operable by the lock may be generally the same as that disclosed in my prior Patent Re. 22,864 and in my copending application, Serial No. 594,232, filed May 17, 1945, now Patent No. 2,486,439 issued Nov. 1, 1949, which is a division of the application upon which said Reissue Patent 22,864 issued. Certain other parts, however, are included in the lock station of this invention which perform functions and accomplish purposes not disclosed in my prior patents and application.
Within the casing 9| of the tour station #45 a key channel 93 is formed by walls 94, 95 cooperating with the casing 9| to provide a channel of limited dimensions in the cross-section thereof to receive only a white key 96 of the set which is utilized for operation of the transmitting station in Figs. 1 and 2. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the key channel 93 extends vertically parallel to the backwall of the casing 9| from a slot opening at the upper wall 91 of the casing 9| to and through the bottom wall 98 thereof. Except for retaining mechanism about tc be described, a key dropped in the upper opening would fall through the channel lengthwise thereof and drop out at the opening in the bottom wall 93. Pivotally supported on in depending relation to pin 99 fastened in brackets |0| fixedly supported on the forward Wall 95 of the key channel is a nger carrying member |93. Adjacent the pivot pin 99 this finger carrying member |03 carries an intercepting bar |95 adjustably fastened by screws |04 passing through vertically extending slots in finger member |03. The bar |05 projects from the member |03 through a slot |06 cut in the Wall 95 of the key channel 93. The positions of the pivot 99 and the bar |05 in relation thereto and of both in relation to the upper wall 91 of the casing 9| are' such with respect to the length of a white key 96 (shown in dotted outline in the upper position in Fig. 4) inserted in the key channel 93 at the upper opening thereof that the key 96 engages the bar |95 before this key becomes positioned fully within the key channel below the wall 91. The lower end |91 of the key 95 engages a beveled upper surface of vthe bar |95 pivotally to move the member |93 against the bias of a spring |09 which has a torsion portion thereof wound around the pivot pin 99 and legs H0 engaging thewall 95 of the key channel 93 on the opposite side of the pivotal pin 99 to bias the bar |05 to the position within the slot |05 and within the key channel.
Adjacent the lower end of the finger carrying member |03 this member carries a pair of iingers When the member |93 is moved counterclockwise in Fig. 4 under the bias of spring |09 the fingers move toward the right respectively to pass through holes ||2 in the forward Wall 95 of the key channel to intercept the key 95 when it shall have passed by the bar |05 and dropped to a position where it may be engaged by the fingers with the shank of the key extending between these ngers so that the head of the key is supported thereby, as shown in the dot and dash outline in Fig. 3. This is the position which the key 95 retained in the key channel takes when the operation of a tour station is completed and the previously inserted key has been withdrawn therefrom for operation of the next tour station. When another whitel key is inserted in the upper opening of the key channel 93 and the lower end |91 of such other key engages the bar |95, the iingers will be moved outwardly of the holes H2 toward the left in Fig. 4 and the key 99 supported on these fingers may drop further in the key channel to the'postions shown in the lower dotted outline, Fig. 3, full lines, Fig. 4,where it will be engaged by means about to be described so that it cannot be withdrawn from the key channel except upon operation of the lock of the tour station in the manner to be described.
Pivotally supported on brackets |5 fastened Yin Fig. 4.
aangaat tothe back'face of the rear wall of the A casing 9| is an auxiliary finger carrying member H1. The member ||'I' is biased to pivot in the -counterclockwise direction i-n Fig. 4 by a spring I I9, having a torsion portion thereof wound upon the supporting pin |26, the ends yof which engage respectively the back face of the casing 9| and the )adjacent surface of the auxiliary member I'I at opposite sides of the pivotal pin |29. The member -Ii'I carries a pair of fingers 2| which may pass through holes |23 in the rear wall of the casing 9| to enter the key channel upon movement of the auxiliary member Ill clockwise against the bias of the spring 'l i9. By means to be described 'su-ch clockwise movement of the auxiliary fingercarrying member |TI is effected eoncomitantly with movement of the linger of ythe finger carrying Imember |93 toward the left as above described, `the fingers l2! intercepting in the lower dotted position in Fig. 3 the key released from the fingers so as to prevent withdrawal of this key at the lower opening of the key 4channel in the `wall 98. The fingers |2'I may be Vformed lwith Ainclined surfaces to conform to the slope of the Ibottom edges ofthe vhead of the particular form of white keys utilized in the .system being described. The end of the shank of this key in this lower position may project through this lower opening so that when the auxiliary finger carrying 'member is moved reversely, that is, in the counterclockwise direction to move the fingers I2| toward the right in Fig. '4 out of the 'key channel 93, `the lower key may drop Vfrom the position where the head thereof is engaged bythe fingers |2| to engagement'with spring retainers 25. These spring retainers |25 arefso'formed that pull exerted on the key the head fof' which rests thereon will move the spring members aside sufciently to enable the head of the key without great resistance to pass by these spring retainers injfrictional engagement therewith vand `-with the rear wall of the key channel.
For the operation 'of the auxiliary finger carrying 'member v| to move the fingers |2| thereof into :key intercepting position in the key channel 93, this member I'I'I is formed with a gooseneck |27 at the upper end thereof which projects through the rear wall of the casing 9| alongside of the key channel, as maybe seen in Figs. 3, 4 and 6. The retroverted portion of |28 of this gooseneck thus normally is positioned within the casing 9| 'and is -engageable 'by a cam finger |29 fastened upon the shaft 85 as shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 6. Upon rotation of the shaft 85 in the normal operation of the lock forwardly, that is, clockwise in Figs. 3 and 5, the cam finger |29 engages the retroverted portion |28 of the member Il'! a-nd moves this member counterclockwise in Figs. 4 vand 6 upon the pivot pin |20 against the bias of the spring I9. The position of the member 'when so 'actuated by the cam |29 is that shown in Fig. 6 with the fingers |2| in key intercepting position within .the key channel 93. When the lock is reversely operated, that is, counterclockwise in Figs. 3 and 5 to rotate the cam vfinger |29 back to the position shown in Fig. 3 from 'that shown in Fig. 5, the vauxiliary finger vcarrying memberV II? vis returned under the bias of spring ||9 to the position shown Such reverse movement, however, may notV take place for reasons which now will be explained until a white key has been inserted in the upper opening .of the key channel to vactuate the vfinger :carrying member |63 to move clockwise in Fig. '4 against the bias of the spring 169.
To prevent return movement of the cam finger E29 until Va White .key is inserted, a locking cam |3| -is fastened upon the finger carrying member |63 and moves toward the left in Figs. 4 and 6 out of the `path of travel of the cam nger |29 in the clockwise movement 'of member |33, thus to permit .the return ymove-ment of this cam mger to the lposition shown in Fig. 3. The form of the lower surface of the'locking cam |3f| in relation to the form of the upper surface, Fig. '6, lof the cam finger 1.29 is such 'that as 'the cam finger |29 -is Arotated clockwise in Fig. '3 in the operation of the lock 89 of lthe tour station the locking cam |31 is moved 'by the cam finger y|29 toward the left in Figs. 4 and 6, thus moving the fingers I l! out of their position within the key channel. In this movement ycam finger '|29 passes above the locking cam # 3| and cannot returnuntil cam |3| is moved out of its path. In the movement of cam A| 3| toward the left, Fig. 4, the key '9B carried on the fingers I will lbe released therefrom to fall further 'through the key channel. Thus, the key may be released from fingers |'I either by insertion of a white key, as above described, or by the initial operation of the lock. In this upward movement of the cam finger |29 the fingers |2| move into the 'key channel and these fingers |72| are effective to intercept and engage the head of the key in the lower dotted position shown in Fig. 3, full lines in Fig. 5. As long as the cam finger 129 is 'prevented by 'locking cam 31| from returning inthe counterclockwise direction in Fig. 3 and downwardly vin Fig. 6, the key .is retained by the fingers |2| and may not be withdrawn from the lower opening of the key channel 93.
The spacing of the ingers `|`2| below 'the bar |05 preferably is such in relation to the length of the key v95 and of fits head that this key when released by bar |25 may drop free thereof and stand 'with its 'toeupon the head of the key below which is supported lon 'fingers 152|. These positions of the 'keys fare yshown ln Fig. 3 respectively in the upper dotted outline of vkey '93 and in lower dotted outline, Fig. 3, and full line, Fig. 5.
The form of the upper surface yof the .locking cam 13| with respect to the form of the lower surface of the cam nger |29 in such that the cam nger |29 may not'be moved downwardly in Fig. 6, that is, counterclockwise in Fig. 5, to pass the locking cam |9| unless this locking cam is moved at least part Way toward the left in Fig. 6 toward the position where it is out of the path of movement of the cam finger |29. This initial movement maybe accomplished by insertion of a white key to engage the bar |85. It now will be lunderstood that when the lock of the tour station is operated by a yellow key forwardly to eifect the change in the combination thereof this lock may not be reversely operated until a white key is inserted in the key channel; alsoY that the "white keyy w-hich 'has been retained within 'the key channel 93 cannot be withdrawn from the channel for insertion in the next tour station unti1 the white key from the previous tour station is inserted :in the upper opening of the tour Ystation being operated. Preferably 'also the yellow keys and the vlock 89 are so formed that the key cannot be vremoved from the lock S9 except in the initial position, that is, when the cam linger |29 is in the position of Fig. 3. When these steps of operation have been carried out fthe lw'lfiite key inserted in the upper opening will be conditionedto drop to the positionin which the fingers |||'will engage the head thereofand the white key `which has been retained in the keychannelwill. be released by the spring movement of locking cam |3| toward the left,y Fig. 4, isV produced, downward movement of the cam finger |29 brings the bevel surface |33 there of, Fig. 6, into engagement with the bevel surface |35 of the locking cam |3| to produce a further` movement of the locking cam |3| toward the left concomitantly with movement of the bar |05, Fig. 4, outwardly of the slot |06. This will relieve or remove the frictional contact of the. bar |05 with the inserted key 96 to release this key to drop Ainto the space within the key channel beneath the bar |05, that is, to the upper dotted position,:Fig. 3, resting on the head of the :lower key (dotted) which now is carried by fingers |2| thislower key having reached this, position by virtue of release from fingers in theupward movement ofcam inger |29 or by insertion of the new white key. The inserted key, therefore, cannot `drop below the fingers .I because,
in the-reverse movement of the lock, counterY clockwise, Fig. 3, the cam finger |29 in its downward movementwill pass the locking cam |3| |2|,.therefore, supports the upper key 96 until A thengers |/I are beneath the head of key 96.
In the apparatusof my prior patent Re. 22,864,
the lock station was constructed so that the cam 5| .wasl continuouslymoved step by step in thev same direction for rotationin the successive operations of the lock. While such a construction maybe utilized, in the embodiment of the invention being described the shaft 85 is given a reciprocating angular. movement corresponding to that of the keyway shaftv of the lock concomitant with the change in*Y the combinationV of 4this lock.
Nevertheless, the cam. 5| iseffective to actuate .l
the -contact .53.v to and from `engagement with the contacts and 51 for the 4purpose of transmitting a routine signal or an alarm signal,v as
the case may be, depending upon the constructionof the tour station as described in connection with stations # 42, #45 and-49 of Fig. 2.
.The construction of the tourstation shown in Figs. 3. 4, 5 and 6 is such that the watchman is not required to` follow ya particular order with respect to the initial operation of the lock by the zyellow key in the. forward direction and the insertion of the white key in the upper openingof lthe key channe1 93. He maytake either of these initial stepsiirst. If, however, he inserts the, key inthe key channel 93A and pushesV it. downwith its head below the upper opening sov that it cannot again be withdrawn,
this key. may vbe held by the pressure `ofthe bar..|05 from dropping to the upper dotted line position, Fig. 3. If thewatchman then operatesl the -lock clockwisa. Fig. 3, Ythe key Vwhich has beenl retained vwithin thekey channel will drop tdengagementwith iingers I| 2| and cannot be withdrawn from the key channe1 93 at the bottorn opening thereof. As above explained, how-A .than vthe width of the slot |41.
ingcam |3| the key 96 will be released from bar |05 and will fall to the position with its toevresting 'on the head of the retained key, the shank of this retained key projecting from the lower 4 openings of the key channel. Thus there will be located within the channel 93 two white keys. The yellow key also cannot be withdrawn from the lock nor can the lock be reversely operated because of the interference by the locking cam I |3| Inorder to'secure release of the projecting white key, however, it is merely necessary that the watchman push this projecting key upwardly,
thereby to push upwardly the key 96 resting thereon until the head of this upper key engages the llower beveled surface of the bar |05, as shown in Fig. 4, to move the finger carrying member 'z |03 clockwise and thereby to move the locking cam |3| toward the left sufficiently to enable the surface l|33 of the cam nger |29 to engage the surface |35 ofthe locking cam I3I. Reverse movement of the lock, with concomitant eamming action of surfaces |33, |35 to move the locking cam |3| out oi the way, then will become possible to the initial position of the lock in which the .yellow key may be withdrawn therefrom.
In Figs. '1 to 13 inclusive is shown the construction of a magazine, such as the magazine 1 dia.-r
grammatically shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This magazine in the embodiment of Figs. 7 to 13 inclusive comprises an outer casing |40 upon which is hinged a door |4| which may be provided withV a lock `|43 having a latch |44 engageable With an opening in the side wall of the casing |40, which opening ymay be covered by a portion |45 of the .door |4| when this door is in the closeclpositionk 'sothat access may not be had to the latch. ForV the operation of the lock |43 the Watchman may carry a special key.
,By means hereafter described, the door |4| of the outer casing is biased to open position. This vdoorv is provided with aslot |41 through which projects a pin |49 carried by a member of the internal mechanism of the magazine, this pin being operable in the direction from left to right in Figs- '1 and 8 through a slot |50 in an the pin |49 shall project through the slot |41 for operation of the magazine. In order to prevent removal of the pin |49 by unsorewing from thev pvotally supported member IBI, the pin |49 is provided with a flange |52 of larger diameter venting tampering with the internal devices of'V the magazine and insures operation of the maga-l y zinein the manner about to be described only when the door is closed.
As shown in Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 13 the upper wall 5 of the. outer casing |40 is provided with a slot |53 registering vwith a slot |55 in the upper Wall of the shell |5|. Fastened upon the door |4| adjacent the upper edge thereof is a slot closing plate |51 of suiiicient width, as shown in Fig. 9 and as shown in dot and dash outline in Fig. 12, to cover the slots f |53 and `|55 when the door is closed.
The lupper wall of the shell |5| is spaced somewhat from the upper wall of the outer casing |40 :sothat the long leg, Fig. 10, of the plate |51 may pass between the casing |40 and the shell |5| in the movement of the door between the open and closed, the plate |51 'being moved clearv of the slots |53`when the door is open, as shown in Fig. ` 13. acca-'42st 206 is relieved and the spring 203 is effective to move the cam plate 20| to the dot and dash position shown in Fig. 12 to cover the opening |91 to prevent withdrawal of the key |11 until the door again is closed. The spring 203 also acts to bias the door to open position. For convenient operation, therefore, the watchman will close the door and lock it in its closed position after in-l serting key |1| in order that his hands may be free to operate the pin |49 to release the key |11 desired for operation of the tour station locks in the next tour. He cannot, moreover, obtain key |11 until the door is closed.
Such operation of the pin |49 to release the key |11, however, does not cause this key directly to drop from the magazine through the openings |95,A |91. To prevent such occurrence within the inner container |61 and fastened to the side walls thereof are springs 209 having the lower portions thereof extending diagonally toward the center line of the magazine, as shown in Figs. 10 and 11. When the key |11 is released upon relieving the pressure of the spring |81 by operating the pin |49 this key will drop so that the head thereof, which may be formed as shown in Fig. 10 of trapezoidal form, is engaged by the springs 209 and retained from falling through the openings |95, |91 until the watchman is ready to pull it through these openings, the springs 209 yielding laterally for this movement. The form and position of springs 209 may be such as suits the form of the yellow key utilized.
It will be understood as shown in Fig. 13 that, when the key |1| is inserted in the slots |53, |55, it must be pushed down so that the upper edge of the head thereof substantially is below the space between the upper wall of the shell and the upper wall of the casing |40 inorder that the plate |51 may pass over the openings |53 and |55 to the position fully covering these openings when the door is in closed position. To insure such full insertion, the upper edge of each key may be slightly beveled and the edge vof the plate f |51 may be correspondingly beveled, as shown in Figs. 9 and 13, so that, if the upper edge of the key is not below the upper surface of the shell |5|, the bevel edge of the plate |51 will engage the bevel edge of the key |1| and force this key downwardly suiciently to permit the plate |51 to pass, provided the key has been pushed down sufiiciently for such engagement. Moreover, as the form and arrangement of the cam plate 20| and the bracket 2% cooperating therewith are such that the key 11 cannot be withdrawnthrough the opening |91 until the door is fully closed with the bracket 20S pressing upon the cam against the bias of spring v2ll3, as shown in Fig. 12, it will be understood that the key |11 cannot be withdrawn from the magazine until the key I'H has been inserted in the magazine to such an extent that it cannot thereafter be withdrawn therefrom.
Correspondingly, as the plate |51 covers the openings |53, |55 until a substantial movement has been given to the door toward its open position, such movement is effective to permit the cam plate 20| to cover the opening |91 and so prevent undesired withdrawal of a key from the series of keys within the magazine before the key |1| is inserted through the slots |53, |55.
In utilizing a magazine of the construction shown in Figs. 7 to 13 inclusive in a system such as that. described in connection with Figs. l'and 2 and in cooperation with tour stations of the construction described in: connection with Figs@ '15.;upper end, that is, the head of the key .240, beins! 3 to 6 inclusive, it is preferable that the form of the keys of the set of yellow'keys which are adapted to be contained within the magazine be different from that of the set of white keys for operating the transmitting station which areinsertable in the key channel 93 of the tour station. By suitably proportioning these keys serving the two purposes described as to thickness and as to the width of the head at the top'thereof and by makingV the head different, for example, rectangular as in Fig. 3 vat thev upper edge and with parallel side edges and sloping bottom.
edges for the white transmitting station keysv and trapezoidal for the yellow keys as in 10 with the widest or base dimension of the trapezoid different from the width of the head of the white key, these widths being suitably chosen with respect to the width of the key channel between the lateral walls thereof, it is possible to prevent insertion of a white key in the magazine in such a manner as to effect operation of the magazine and, as well, to prevent insertion of the yellow keys in the key channel of the tour station in such a way as to effect operation of the tour station for release of a white key therefrom.
In Figs. 14 to 17 inclusive is shown a modification of the key magazine of the invention. This magazine is formed with a casing 2||. Pivotally supported on a pin 2|3 carried at itsv ends in the front and back walls of the casing 2|| is a member 2|5 biased by helical spring 2|1 toward the left in Figs. 14, 15 and 17. The spring 2|1 extends about a pin 2|8 rigidly fastened in the upper end of the pivoted member 2|5. The right hand end of the pin 2|8 extends into a recess 2|9 in a guide member 22| fastened in the end wall of the casing 2| a washer 222 being provided between the spring 2|1 and the left hand end of the member 22|. The upper portion of the pivoted member 2|5 is rounded at 223 to provide space for insertion of a key between the set of five keys contained within the magazine and the member 2|5. Such insertion is accomplished through a slot 225 in the upper wall of the casing 2| l.
Such insertion, however, can only take place when a cover 221 having an end extension 228 for lifting by hand is moved counterclockwise in Fig. 14 pivotally on a bolt 229 supported in the front and back walls of the casing 2| Lifting of the cover 221 uncovers the slot 225 and also uncovers a pair of openings 23| in the upper` wall of the casing 2|| adjacent the opposite end of the series of keys in the magazine from the member 2|5. The cover 221 carries a pair of fingers 233 shown in Figs. 14 and 16 respectively registering with the openings 23|. When the cover is in the closed position, as shown in Fig. 14, these fingers A233 extend downwardly within the casing adjacent the wall 235 thereof. Adjacent this wall 235 in the bottom wall 236 of the casing an opening 231 is provided for withdrawal from the magazine, for example, of the yellow key for the next tour upon insertion through the slot 225 of the yellow" key which has been used in the tour just completed, as abovedescribed. The action of the set of keys within ther magazine upon insertion of such key through the slot 225 is similar to that described in connection with Figs.
7 to 13 inclusive. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 14 to 17 inclusive, however, adjacent the opening 231 the bottom wall 236 of the casing is formed withv a'slightly upturned lip 239. The
emitting station is not provided with a key channel as are the tour stations 250. This key 6 is carried by the watchman to the magazine #21| associated with the first tour station # 26| and is inserted in this magazine to secure withdrawal of another key 2 of the set of keys, this key so withdrawn beingutilized to operate this first tour station # 26| in the second round or tour. The -series of steps 1s repeated in the second tour 1n the manner Just described. The keys Withdrawn as above described are shown stippled in Fig. 18.

(5), indicates the keys inserted in the magazine The magazine or station is the key withdrawn upon The keys It willbe understood from a consideration of the arrangement of the keys in the magazines 25| and 255 of Fig. 18 and by comparison with Table II that the insertion of a given key in a magazine insures the withdrawal of a. predetermined key of the set and the insertion of this Withdrawn key in.the key channel of a tour station associated with the vmagazine insures the Withdrawal of a key which may be inserted in the magazine associated with a succeeding tour station again to insure the withdrawal of a predetermined key for operation of this next tour station. It also will be apparent from a consideration of Table II that with five tour-stations as as shown in Fig.'18V and onetransmitting-istation, the cycle of tours is repeated upon the completion of six tours utilizing a plurality ofduplicate sets of keys which are distributed'in the magazines and in the -tour stations of the system. It will be apparent that in the particular embodiment shown in Fig. 18 for which Tablev -II shows the successions of keys inserted and Withdrawn, eleven duplicate sets of keys, each set consisting of six keys corresponding to the six combinations ofthe combination changing lock,
are required.
` The system shown inFig. 18 is advantageous for conditions reouiring vthe survey by a watchman Where it is diflicult or otherwise disadvan- 'tageous to provide for signals to be given at a central oiiice. It'will be understood from the detailed description of tour stations and the magazines given above that these devices are highly fool proof and that the watchman must 'operate the system in the manner described in order that he shall always have the proper key for 'the operation of the locks: of the tour stations and the transmitting station the combinations of which are changed in each operation.` It will be apparent from inspection of Fig. 18 that the magazines 25| maybe divided into two sections and that these sections may be located indifferent locations on the site or area to be surveyed by the Watchman. Thus. the upper portion of the magazine #21| containing the series of keys 4. 3, 2, l. 6 in Fig. 18 may be 1ocated in a separate place from the section of this magazine which contains the'series of- keys 5, 4, 3, 2, In such cases, it is merely necessary that when the key 6 is Withdrawn by the Watchman from the upper section upon insertion of a key 5 therein, he may carry the key 6 to the second section of the magazine. Upon insertion of this key 6 in this v.second section, key may be Withdrawn from this second section and used in the operation of the associatedtour station # 26| as above described. This. tour station # 26| may be at a diierent location' from either of the sections of the magazine, the association being that which insures the proper sequence of insertion and Withdrawal of keys' and not necessarilyof adjacency or a mechanical Y connection. The magazine 255 associated with the transmitting station 253 may be similarly Y55 divided. Thus, vi5 will be understood that .by
dividing the magazines 25| and 255'in Fig. 1,8, seventeen locations may be provided for Which the Watchman must visit in making his tour V.in order that he mayv secure the .proper key for operation of .the transmitting station. .This

In the embodiment of the invention which. utilizes a set of yellow keys supplemental to the set oi"` vyhite*.keys which are-adapted to operate the transmitting station, thesupplemental fyellow keysa're different'from the white transmitting station keys. 'In' the embodiment 'of Fig. 18,
however, aswell as 'the modification thereof described Wliich utilizes only the magazines and a transmitting station, the supplemental keys are of the same form, that is,f they are capable of operating the same lock, at least the transmitting station lock; as arey the `keys which are passed in succession Vthrougl'i the vkey channels of the tourstatio`ns- 'Where'the tour stations are provided with locks, this supplemental setjof keys aswell as the other keys which' are distributed through theE system'y are the same, that is, they correspond respectively tothe same combinations of the lock, so that'all of the locks of the tour :stations and that of the transmitting station may be alike.
While the system ofthe invention has been described in four mofdiiications' thereof, other modifications are possible within the scope thereof and other uses may be made of the vdevices Whichareutilized in the'systems of the invention. Xample, lthe' magazines of `the construction her Figs. 7 to"13 Viri'cliisive or 14- to'17'inive 'may be utilized forcontaining" the differnt keys'of' a set'of "'keysfcorresponding 'to the 'Quintin-anew for a 'leek 'the' combination' ofwhicn ayibe changed. In such use, however, ordinarily the lock on the door or closure would be so constructed that it may be operated by one of thevkeys of the set Without changing the combinationv in each operation of the lock. The lock, however, would be constructed so that its combination may be changed by a master key when such change is desired.
The magazine utilized. for containing such a Aset of keys itself may be provided with a combi'- nation changing lock operable in succession by the keys of the set of keys contained therein.
Thus, to secure the next key for operation of the lock of the door of the hotel or other closure in the combination to which it is changed by the master key or otherwise, the key previously used for operating this door lock may be used to kunlock the magazine, for example, of the type shown in Figs. '7 to 13 inclusive.
After lopening the magazine, this key may be inserted therein as described in connection with Figs. 7 to 13 inclusive to condition the desired next key for withdrawal therefrom. The magazine may beprovided with a lock having a snap latch, as shown in Fig. 7, so that the door of the magazine mayy be snapped closed after such insertion andthe desired next key withdrawn. The combination of the magazine lock will have been changed in x the operation thereof to open the magazine and lthus will require this next keyjust withdrawn constructed, for example, as shown in Figs. 7 to 13 inclusive may be provided with combination changing locks. It will be apparentfrom a consideration of Tables I, II and III in connection with Figs. 1, 2 and 18, that a key Withdrawn from a magazine for insertion in the key channel of a I tour station or for insertion in a succeeding magazine insures the withdrawal `of a predetermined key Vfrom such succeeding tour station or magazine. It also is apparent that the successive combinations to which the keys so withdrawn correspond progress in regular order. It, therefore, is possible in the systems of the invention utilizing magazines initially to set the combination of the combination changing lock of the magazine for operation of a given key, for example,
i key 6 withdrawn from tour station # 26| to opcrate the lock of magazine #212, this key being inserted in this magazine as above described. In the next tour key l which is the next key in order will be withdrawn from tour station # 26| for insertion in magazine #212 and may be utilizedv for operation oi the lock of magazine #212 to open this magazine before such insertion and con- Acomitantly to change the combination of its lock.
Other `uses and other variations from the particular arrangements and devices Ahereinabove disclosed may be made by those skilled in the art I While utilizing the features of the invention which of the next tour station.
have been summarized above and otherwise disclosed herein. All such variations and modifications are Within the scope of the invention and are intended to be covered by the appended claims.
