Description

(No Model.)
G. S. DEAN;
WIRE STRETOHER.
Patented Dec. 13,1881.
NITED STATES GEORGE S. DEAN, OF INDEPENDENCE, IOWA.
WlRE-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,790, dated December 13, 1881.
Application filed October 17,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE S. DEAN, of Independence, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fence Ti ghteners; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure] is a perspective view of my device in operation; and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the under side of the holder B.
The object of my invention 'is to provide an economical, effective, and rapid method of tightening fence or other wires; and to this end it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter to be more fully set forth, and specifically claimed.
4 To enable others skilled in the art to avail themselves of the benefits of my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a lever, to which is secured the links a a, and to these links are attached the hooks b b.
B represents a wire-holder which is pivoted to the lever A. This holder consists of a metal plate provided with the back piece, 0, on its upper side, and at the end nearest the post it is bifurcated, one horn thereof being hooked and the other extending back under the plate to the opposite end, and is confined by the same pivot that secures the lever to the plate.
(1 represents a clamp pivoted to the plate B,
its end being curved and serrated, as seen in the drawings, in order that the wire may be firmly held between it and the back piece, 0.
6 represents a chain, which is passed around the fence-post D. One end of this chain is B represents another holder, similarly constructed to the one just described, with the exception that it is not provided with either hook or extension. Its front part, however, is furnished with a suitable hole for the attachment of the chain g.
In operation I attach the holder B to a fencepost by means of the chain 6, and clamp the holder B firmly to the wire to be tightened. By now hooking one of the hooks b in the chain 9 and drawing back the lever A the wire is tightened up, and the other hook b, is-
at the same time thrown forward for engagement with the chain, and this movement is repeated until the hooks reach the plate B. If at this point the wire is not tight enough, its end may be clamped in the holder B, and so held while the plate B" is slipped back and reclamped, when the operation is repeated till the required tension is obtained, and the wire secured to the fence-posts.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. The combination, in afence-wire-tightening device, of the holder B, its clamp cl, chain c, and lever A, substantially as and. for the purpose described.
2. The combination of lever A, having attached thereto the links a a, the holder B, provided with a pivoted clamp and a shoulder, c,
the chain g, and hooks b b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of lever A, holder B, chain 0, links a a, and hooks b b with chain g, and holder B, all the parts constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.-
4. The holder B, constructed with the hook, the loop, or extended arm, the clamp and the shoulder, substan tially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. GEORGE S. DEAN. Witnesses:
J. B. J ONES, D. O. BACKUS.
