My invention has to do with impnovements :in pump jacks, or power heads, adapted tOi'bE used to operate the piston 01 a pump.
An object of my invention is to provide-.apump jack having .a bottom casing, adapted :to: contain a supply of lubricating oil, anda. pivotaliy, or removably, .mountecl' top casing, having mounted thereon all the operatmgsmechanismof thejack which it is desirabl'eltc'have operating in the oil bath within the casing, whereby the operating mechanism may be readily removed from the casing for inspection or repair.
A further object of my invention is to provide, in a pump jack, a novel actuating .arm having an arcuate movement, supported in and projecting through a downwardly directed aperture in the casing top, which is located at a distance above an oil bath in :thecasing. ih'ottom; whereby effective operation is obtained without'loss rof oil through the aperture.
These and other objects will be apparent from the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of my pump jack connected in operative relation to a conventional p p;
Fig. 2 is a plan of my pump jack with parts broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a section. on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
As illustrated in Fi 1, my pump jack is adapted to be used with a pump head It! having a spout li, a pump handle [2, and a piston rod I3. For hand operation the piston rod I3 is reciprocated by movement of the pump handle 12. To adapt the pump for power operation pitmans M are provided which are connected in a conventional manner to the piston rod [3. The pump handle i2 is disconnected from the piston rod l3 when it is desired to operate the piston rod l3 by connecting the pitmans I4 to the pump jack.
My pump jack comprises a bottom casing member l5 forming a chamber for a suitable lubricant and a top casing member 15, which supports the operating mechanism thereon. The bottom casing member I5 is provided with a pair of inverted U-shaped socket members l1 while the top casing member i5 is provided with pairs of spaced apertures [3 which receive therein the threaded legs IQ of U-shaped pintles 2i) journaled in the socket members i! and provided with fastening nuts 2| on the legs IS.

A reciprocating. arm or: :pitmanr .39 is eccentrically pivoted satone enddfl-rto eachofzthekgears 24 while the other end of each arm 39 is pivoted at 4| to a bell crank actuating member 42. The bell crank 42 is mounted on a shaft 43 which is journaled in brackets 44 depending from the top casing member IS. The upwardly directed arm 45 of the bell crank member 42 terminates in an arcuate portion 46 to which is attached the arcuate portion 41 of an actuating arm 48. The arm 48 extends through an aperture 49 in the top casing member I6. The actuating arm 48 is provided with a laterally extending portion 50 which is adapted to be pivotally secured at 5| to the bottom of the pitman E4.
The actuating mechanism of my pump jack is supported from the top casing member l6 and projects down into the bottom casing member I5 where it receives adequate lubrication from the oil 52 in the bottom casing member. The top casing member [5 is provided around its edge with a sealing channel 53 which engages over the top edge of the bottom casing l5. The operation of the parts within the casing agitates the oil 52 and carries it to all the bearing points. The
structure is designed to prevent loss of oil because all operating members which extend out 7 of the casing are arranged to extend through apertures in the top casing member l6, well above the level of the oil bath 52 in the bottom casing l5. Access to all the working parts, either for repair or replacement, is obtained merely by hinging the top casing member I 6 about its pintles 20 or if desired by removing the top casing member I6 entirely.
While I have described specific details of construction and. arrangement of the parts of my extending through the aperture in the cover 1 member and having a laterally extending poition adapted to be connected to a pitman on the pump.
2. In a pump jack for operating a pump which is provided with a piston rod and pitman connected thereto, a casin having a removable top member provided with a downwardly facing aperture, operating arms connected to said pitman, said arms having portions extending laterally and other portions extending upwardly and inwardly through said aperture into the top cover member, means mounted within said top cover member and connected to the upwardly and inwardly extending portions of said operating arms for oscillating said operating arms, power drive means located outside of said casing, and means extending into said top cover member and connecting said power drive means-with said means for oscillating said operating arms.
3. In a pump jack for operating a pump which is provided with a piston rod and a pitman connected thereto, a casing having a top cover memberrhingedly connected thereto, said cover member having a portion extending over a side of the casing adjacent the pump, said extending portion of said cover member having a downwardly directed aperture, operating arms connected to said pitman, said operating arms having a laterally extending portion and an upwardly curved portion projecting upwardly through said aperture and into said cover member, means mounted within said cover member and extend ing into said casing for oscillating said operating arms, said curved portion of said operating arms being connected to said oscillating means, power drive means located outside of said casing, and means extending into said cover member for connecting said power drive means with said oscillating means for said operating arms.
4. In a power head for a pump provided with a pitman, a casing having a top provided with a portion overhangin the bottom of the casing and a downwardly facing aperture therein, power mechanism mounted in said casing, an oscillating actuator device supported in said casing, said actuator having an arm connected to said power mechanism, and said actuator having another arm extending upwardly into said top and then outwardly and downwardly through said downwardly facing aperture in said top and a laterally extending portion on said last mentioned arm for connection with the pitman on the pump whereby said last mentioned arm is moved in an arcuate path by operation of said power mechanism to oscillate said pitman.
