This invention relates to contributing to the maintenance of an elected marking on sheet material.
This invention has utility as a marker of the check writer type. are selected from independent supply ways, accumulated in the desired sequence and thrust past an inking station to a position over the instrument to be marked against alteration. At this position a-scarifying impressv of th'entire grouping' of the-characters is efedt'ed a single'operation upon-the check.-

Upon pads or suction feet I there may be mounted a general frame unit 2, preferably of metal or plastic, suciently substantial to maintain service in normal oiilce operations. From an end 3 of the unit 2, there extends a trunk way 4 having a reduced width top slot-providing portion 5.
Perpendicular to the way 4, are branch ways 6 having reduced width top slot portions 1 extending to the slot 5, as feeder Ways thereto and receiving branches therefrom.
At an opening 8 in the bottom of the way 4, and protruding upwardly into the way 4, is an inking roller 9, say of soft brous material. An ink supply pocket or reservoir Il! has a retainer plate II, shiftable to allow resupply of marking substance.
A cranl; I2 is at the opposite or back side I3 of the frame 2. The crank I2 is normally down against a pin or stop I4 protruding from the side I3. The crank I2 is fixed on a shaft i5 extending transversely thru the frame 2 to a front side IG. A top Il for the frame 2 has therein the slot 5 and its branches 'l'. An opening I8 downward from the way 4 in the region beyond the inking roller 9 away from the branch ways 6, has the shaft I5 extend thereacross. before issuing a check, the operator should shove the character 3| over the inking roller 9 in the event re-inking be required, and then return the character 3| to the location shown.
At the end 3 of the frame 2 is a slide door 32, which, as opened, permits the introduction of a special character 3|, as well as the normal notation units. A type element 33 carries a readily visible notation disclosing face 34 opposite from its printing face 35. Between these faces, the element 33 has parallel opposite guide way grooves 36, complementally coacting in a way l'. Check notation 31 at the ends of the respective ways 'I on the top Il allow the operator to verify the alley or branch 'l' to which return of the character as removed may be taken, as well as initially stocking the check writer with its printing characters. In the plane of the grooves 36, is a pair of lparallel shoulders 38 for cooperation along the way or slot 5as the type element be removed from its reserve branch in selection for use. For this operation, the characters are taken in the order sought for the total, reading from the left. Observing this order in taking the respective type from the branches to the way 4 to move along its slot 5, the characters in this transit toward the region for printing at the platen 2I, pass over the inking roller 9. This movement causes the compressible face of the roller 9 to engage frictionally sufficiently with the type in this transit to bring up ink for a succeeding type element following this course. The loosely located roller 9 at the opening 8 above the ink well or reservoir I0, has a slight slippage as to the type 3 suilcient to wipe some ink upon the printing face 35.
With the selected notations grouped compactly together in the slot 5 of the way 4 over the platen 2|, the check 26 to be marked, is thrust thru the opening 24 for its to-be-marked region 21 to register under the type in the way 4. The crank l2 is then grasped and swung upward away from the stop I4. This causes the cam I9 to ride against the underside of the platen 2l, and squeeze its cutting ribs 22 into the back side of the check 26 in the movement of the platen 2| against the characters on the faces 35 as aligned for the elements 33. Scarifed marking 39 is thus made on the check 26.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A marking tool comprising a frame having a seat for an object to be marked, a slide way in the frame for type character elements, said way extending to and across a portion of said seat, a plurality of branch ways independently extending to said slide way at a portion of said way remote from said seat, character elements adapted to be selectively shifted from the respective branch ways directly to the slide way in a desired sequence therefor for movement along the slide way to the seat in forming an assembled lineal extent group, an object scarifying independent platen unit of continuity for the lineal extent of and at the opposite side of the object from the group at said way, there being guide means in the frame for an object to be marked to be positioned between the scarifying platen unit and the group of character elements, and shifting means for the platen unit relatively to the frame held group at the way for eiecting group controlled scarifying marking of the object.
2. A marking tool comprising a frame having a seat for an object to be marked, a multi-section way in the frame for type character elements, a plurality of branch ways independently extend- 4 ing to a first section of said slide way, second and third slide way sections, said second section of said way providing inking means spacing the rst section from the third section extending to and across a portion of said seat, character elements adapted to be selectively shifted from the respective branch ways directly into said rst section in a desired sequence in passing therefrom and thru the second section, to be there inked, into the third section in a lineal extent group, an object scarifying independent platen unit of continuity for the lineal extent of and at the opposite side of the object from the group at said way third section, there being guide means in the frame for an object to be marked to be positioned between the scarifying platen unit and the group of character elements, and shifting means for the platen unit relatively to the frame held group at the way for effecting group controlled scarifying marking of the object.
