Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
BENJAMIN H. LEWIS, OF HENDERSON, ALABAMA.
TURBINE WATER-WHEEL.
D SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,668, dated December 13, 1881.
Application led September 17, 1881. (N o model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. LEWIS, of Henderson, in the county of Pike and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turbine Water-Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeA and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification.
Figure l is a bottom plan of my improved turbine. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a front view, showing the gate; and Fig. et is a detail view of the wheel detached from the casing.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like'letters of reference.
This invention relates to turbine waterwheels; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will he hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the casing, which is provided with the chute B for the admission of water.
Near the front end of the chute is hinged a valve or gate, C, hy which the supply of water may be regulated or ,cut off, said gate being operated by means of a threaded rod, D, titted in one side of the chute, and having its inner end swiveled to the side ot' the gate.
E is the wheel, which consists of a regular polygonal core, F, to the sides of which tangential blades, G, are secured, as shown. To the lower edges of these blades are secured the sl'a-nting buckets H, from which the water is discharged through the bottom of the casing.
To facilitate the iiow of the water between the buckets K and the lower edges of blades Gr, said blades are provided with notches I, simply for the purpose of increasing the size of the water-channels between the blades and the buckets, and the outer edges of the buckets H are connected by an annular ring, J, which serves to strengthen and tie the parts together.
The upper aud lower sides of the casin g have bearings for the vertical shaft K of the wheel, said shaft heilig provided near its upper end with a pulley or gear, from which power may be communicated to the machinery to be operated. u
The operation of my improved turbine will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.
Ihe water, entering the casing through the chute B, strikes the tangential blades with great force and causes the wheel to revolve. In escaping downward over the slanting buckets the weight of the water, instead of retarding the motion, acts with a downward pressure upon the said buckets, so as to increase the rapidity of the revolution of the wheel, and consequently augment the power.
The construction of my improved turbine is simple` and inexpensive, but few and simple castings being required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States- A As an improvement in turbines, the combination, with the casing A, having chute B, of the wheel E, consisting of a polygonal core, F, having tangential blades G and slanting buckets H, and the ring or tire J, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN H. LE WIS.
