Description
MW 29 11950 R. FoERs'l-ER 2,5%,888
` wINDow Filed Sept. 12, 1946 2 Sheets-Sheet l Patented May 2, 1950 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 3 zClaims.
This invention relates to an improved window construction.
Heretofore in the vconventional type of window construction the glass panes have been held in place by tacks and/or pu-tty. In the removal of a broken glass in a Window ofsuch conventional construction,` it is necessary to remove the nails and putty before the broken glass can be removed and then nails and putty are'again used to Jhold the new pane of glass in place. A large amount of labor is involved in such an operation and is of such a character that frequently a skilled Worker is called upon to make the installation.
It is an object of thisinvention to provide a window sash construction of such a character` that the glass, when broken, mayzbe removed and a new pane installed With a minimum amount of labor, and by any one even unskilled in the use of putty and in the fit-ting of windows. The window of my invention is provided with apane of glass slidable in a window frame so that the glass may be readily slid from the 'frame and a new pane slid into place.
Another object of this invention is to provide a Window sash having an outer frame and an inner frame to which the pane of glass is secured, the inner frame being slidable in the outer frame for the removal of the glass therefrom. By such a construction and arrangement an inner frame of a definite size, having the glass fastened therein, may be procured by a buyer and slid into place without calling upon one skilled in such an operation, and the glass may be readily slid into the inner frame.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specifications, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended olaims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly broken away, of a window sash constructed according to an embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan view, With the cover plate removed,
Figure 4 is a horizontal section, partly broken away, taken on the line "i 4 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a front plan view, partly broken away, of the inner frame with the glass removed,
Figure G is a horizontal section, taken on the line '6-5 of Figure 1, and
Figure 7 is a Vertical section taken on the line 'i-l of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral I [1 Vdesignates generally a window sash constructed according to an embodiment of my invention. The window sash 11) is formed With an outer frame I 1, an inner frame 12 and a pane of glass 13. The inner frame 12 consists of an elongated flatl strip of metal 14 on each side of the pane of glass 13 about the upper, lower and side edges thereof. The frame members 14 overlie the edges of the glass '13 and extend outwardly therefrom where the corresponding members 14 on opposite sides are secured together by bolts 15. In orc'er :to space' the members 14 apart a distance equal ;to the thickness of the glass, washers or spacers 16 are placed about each bolt 15. The glass 13 is then supported against movement in the frame 12 by the spacers 18.
A lower bar 1'1 is fixed between the framezmembers if Valong the lower edge of the frame 12 `to provide a firm and solid base therefor. No bolts 15 or spacers 15 are provided on the 'inner frame 12` along the upper edge between the members: 1.4 in order that theglass '13 may be installed freely or removed from this. end.
The inner frame 12 and glass 13 are both secured in an outer frame 11. The outer frame 11 is formed with frame members 18, U-shaped in cross-section, about the edges of the inner frame 12, the members 14 being encompassed between the arms and bight of the members 18, as seen in Figures 4 and 6. The outer frame 11 extends about the upper 'and lower end and sides of the inner frame 12, the top member 18a thereof being open along the bight thereof, whereby the inner frame 12 and glass 13 may be removed from the outer frame 18 either singularly or assembled. The inner frame 12 is secured to the outer frame I I by bolts 19 which extend through the inner frame members 14 outwardly of the pane of glass E3. The lower edges of the inner panel 12 are spaced from the inside of the lower frame members 13 by space bars 21! which extend along the length thereof.
The inner edges of the outer frame members 18 and 18a are bent inwardly to press against the glass 33 inwardly of the inner frame 12 to provide a Weather seal about the glass 13.
To close the upper end of the frame 11 a cover 2 extends across the opening in the bight of member 13a and is formed with a pair of d-epending ears 22, one on each side of the outer frame member 13a and is secured in place by a bolt 19a which extends through the ears 22, and the outer and inner frame members 18a and 14 respectively. The bolt 19a. and cover plate 21 hold the inner asoasss frame l2 and glass 13 in the window sash IB, and removal of bolt l9a permits removal of the glass |3 from both inner and outer frames 'and its replacement. By removing all the bolts |9 from the outer frame ll, the inner frame IZ and glass |3 may be removed.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.
What I claim is: l
1. A Window sash comprising an inner frame and an outer frame, said inner frame including elongated metal strips on both sides of a glass pane about the perimeter thereof, said strips partly overlying the edge of said pane, means securing the strips on one side of said pane to the corresponding strip on the other side in spaced apart relation, said strips being spaced apart a distance equal to the thickness of said pane, said outer frame including U-shaped channel members having encompassing bight portions extending between spaced arms thereof, the inner frame being disposed between the arms of said channel members, the upper of said channel member being formed with an opening therein along the bight thereof through which said pane may be slidably engaged, a closure for said opening and means securing said closure to said outer frame, said means engaging said inner frame and pane for holding said inner frame and said pane against sliding movement in said Window sash, whereby said pane may be removed upon removal of said means and said closure.
2. A window sash as set forth in claim 1 Wherein said channel members are formed with inwardly bent edges engageable with said pane for sealing said pane in said sash.
3. A window sash comprising an inner frame, a pane of glass vertically slidable therein, and an outer frame, said inner frame including front and rear side, top, and bottom members, said members being formed of elongated metal strips partly overlying the edge of said pane, means extending through said side members for securing the front and rear members together, said means including spacers for retaining said front and rear side members in spaced apart relation and for preventing horizontal movement of said pane, a bar disposed between said front and rear bottom members for` retaining said members in spaced apart relation and for supporting said pane, said outer frame including U-shaped side, top and bottom channel members with the bight portions thereof spaced outwardly from the edge of said pane, the inner frame being disposed between the arms of said channel members and spaced therefrom, said top channel member formed with an opening in the bight portion thereof through which said pane may be slidably engaged, a closure for said opening and means securing said closure to said top channel member, said securing means engaging said inner frame and said pane for holding said inner frame and said pane against sliding movement in said outer frame, whereby said pane may be removed from said inner and outer frames upon removal of said securing means and said closure.
