Description

miran STATES Pagan carica".
N. B. SLAYTON,` OF MADISON, INDIANA.
SECURING ARTIFICIAL TEETI-I.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,053, dated August 9, 18159.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. B. SLAYToN, of IWIadison, in the county of Jefferson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Modes of Securing- Artificial Teeth Upon Plates of Gold and Silver; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description there of, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon and made to form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates, first, to the securing of artificial teeth upon plates of gold and silver, by means of an amalgam, of gold, or silver, or both, combined with mercury, as hereinafter set forth. 2d, forming, of said amalgam an outer flange, or rim, which may constitute a step or recess in which the base of the teeth may rest, and at the same time afford additional strength and support to the setting of the teeth as hereinafter specified and represented.
In reference to the accompanying drawings Figure l, is a perspective view of a set of artificial teeth, secured to a plate in accordance with my invention and provided with the outer flange or rim. Fig. 2, is a perspective view showing, the manner of securing the teeth, and fitting the interstices between and around them. Fig. 3, is a sectional view showing the manner of securing the teeth. Fig. 4, is a sectional elevation of the plate, with a portion of the teeth removed.
(A) represents a plate formed in the ordinary method of gold or silver (a) represents the outer flange or rim (formed of the amalgam) as hereinafter described extending from the body of the plate (A) sufficiently to form a step or recess, in which the base of the teeth (b) may rest.
(c) clearly shown in Fig. 3, is a metallic rod, attached to the teeth (b) and extending therefrom, in the form of a hook around which the amalgam is packed while in a plastic state, and by means of which the teeth are more firmly secured.
(d) Fig. 2, shows the manner of building up the backing of the teeth and filling the interstices between them by means of the amalgam.
(f) Fig. el shows the bearing the amalgam aords to the back of the teeth.
The operation of securing teeth upon a plate of gold or silver by means of my invention may be described as follows: The plate will be s truck and fitted, to the mouth the articulation secured, and the teeth ground to lit, in the ordinary manner. The teeth will then be properly fitted to their places upon the plate (A). The outside of the teeth and plate, will' then be invested in a preparation of asbestos and plaster of paris, or other suitable composition, for properly securing the teeth to their places. The plate (A) upon the inside, or, back of the teeth will then be well cleaned, in order to remove all foreign substances, and a brass or silver wire brush, first dipped in a solution of nitrate of mercury and then in pure mercury, will be passed over the plate (A) at the points where the amalgam is desired to adhere, until those points are perfectly silvered over. Gold or silver or both, combined, properly prepared by precipitation, or other mode, with mercury and well triturated, will be placed in a buck skin, or other suitable sack, and then in a vise, and all the mercury possible pressed out in that manner. The amalgam is then again triturated, and with proper instruments packed around the backs of the teeth, embedding, the hooked rod or wire (c) and perfectly fitting all the interstices between the teeth, and forming the back as shown in Fig. 2 (d). The finish is made complete, as no allowance is necessary for shrinkage. The inside or back of the teeth are now invested with the preparation before described, in such manner as to cover all the amalgam. The said preparation will then be removed with a suitable sharp instrument, from the outer edge of the plate, and such portion of the teeth as are to be covered by the flange or rim (a). The outer edge of the plate will then be treated in the manner before described, and the rim (a) formed of the amalgam, in a manner precisely similar, to the backing upon the inside of the teeth, as above set forth. The finish now being complete, the outside of the plate and, the rim formed as aforesaid, will be again invested in said preparation of asbestos and plaster of paris, so as to completely cover all the amalgam, two slight perforations being made in said preparation at either end of the row of teeth, to permit the escape of the mercury. The whole will then be placed in an oven, or other suitable vessel for the purpose, and subjected to a heat of at least seven hundred degrees and kept there for,
from tWo to four hours, until the mercury is entirely driven off. The amalgam Will then have adhered to the plate in such a manner as to form part of the same, and the teeth Will be secured in the most perfect manner. Should greater strength be required, after the heating process, the amalgam may be Washed in a solution of boraX, and gold or silver solder applied. The Whole Will then be subjected to heat suflicient to smelt the solder, Which Will flow freely through the cells, vacated by the mercury, thereby f0rming a perfect union of the plate and, amalgam, in one solid mass of metal.
Among other advantages secured by means of my invention, one important one is, that the juices of the mouth, and food are prevented from entering the interstices ing, and supporting the base of the teeth,
and thereby generating 'an offensive taste 20 and smell by decomposition.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. Securmg artificial teeth upon plates of gold or silver, by means of an amalgam of 25 gold or silver, or both, substantially as here in described for the purposes set forth.
2. I claim forming, by means of said amalgam, an outer flange or rim (a), covering, and supporting the base of the teeth, 30
