Description
April 25, 1950 N. H. mm 2,505,141
WHISTLE Filed June 14, 1944 Patented Apr. 25, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WHISTLE Ncrman H. Pitts, Milledgeville, Ga.
Appiicaticn June 14, 1944, Serial No. 540,200
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to whistles and has for an object to provide a whistle for producing a number of different notes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a whistle device consisting of a cylinder into which is attached a mouth piece and in which is encased a removable plate carrying a series of whistles of varying length and diameter any one of which may be brought into adjustment with an air passage connected with the mouth piece.
With the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompany ing drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of my improved whistles;
Figure 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a detail plan view of a whistle carrying disc; and
Figure 5 is an end view of the device with the mouth piece being removed.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings, in which i indicates my improved whistle, which consists of a drum-shaped cylinder 2, open at its outer end. A wall 15 closes the inner end of the cylinder, which wall is provided with an annularly ar-- ranged series of bores 5, 6, 1, etc., the purpose of which will presently be explained. A disk 8 carries a series of annularly arranged whistles 9, 10, H, which are of varying length and diameter and conforming to the varying diameters of the bores 5, S, and I. The said whistles are projected through said bores into the cylinder 2 with the disk 8 seating fiat against the wall 4. The members 4 and 8 are of the same diameter and slightly larger than that of the cylinder 2. A pivot rod l2 holds the members 2, 4 and 8 securely together.
A cap l3 having a wind compression compartment I4 is provided with an annular wall IS, the diameter of which is such as to permit its peripheral portion to be turned over the projecting edges 5 and Hi to form an annular channel l1 rotatable around or within which cylinder 2 is rotatable. The wall I5 is provided with a single opening i 8, which, through rotation of said members 2 and !3, relative to one another, will bring the same into alignment with one of the whistles 9, it, ll, etc. The cap [3 may be formed as shown in Figure 2, or of any other desired contour. The wall H1 is provided with one or more openings 25, adjacent positions of the whistle openings 2!, for the emission of sound.
Having now described by invention, that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
A sound producing device, comprising a drum, said drum being provided with a wall at one end, closing said drum at this end and formed with a plurality of openings radially arranged, a plurality of pipes, each having one end disposed into the corresponding opening of the drum wall and projecting longitudinally in the drum, each of said pipes, having an air outlet opening adjacent said wall, said drum having a plurality of openings, registering with the openings of the pipes, said wall end of the drum being provided with an outstanding circumferential flange, a cap structure disposed over the flange, and within which the flange and the drum are adapted to rotate, a mouth piece projecting from the cap and having an air compartment therein, said mouthpiece having a forward wall formed with an opening therein, with which any one of the pipes is selectively registerable, and a control member extending longitudinally through the drum.
