Claims. 1
This invention relates .to fastening devices and particularly to anchors used for securing the head of a bolt or screw in places that are otherwise inaccessible.
The primary object of this invention is to pro-- vide an inexpensive bolt anchor that may be quickly and easily mounted on a conventional bolt or screw, inserted into'a suitably drilled support and quickly and easily mounted thereon.
Another object is to provide a device of the type stated whichlocks in its fixed or permanent position and which may not be easily loosened or displaced.
A further objectcis to construct such device so that it automatically opens, drops and fits into its proper locking .position.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the 'following specification and claims, together with the accompanying drawing in which like parts are referred to and indicated by like reference characters and wherein;

and C in the Figure 12 of the drawing and are hereinafter referred to and describedas the head,
foot and intermediate portions respectively. Each of these elements will be describedindetail hereinafter and in the order stated.
The device, when properly shaped and formed, is mountable on a conventional bolt indicated in the drawing as having a shank 2i and a head 22. The device, when temporarily or longitudinally mounted on the 'bolt and as shown in the Fig.- ure' 1, is able'to be projected through an opening in a wall such as is indicated by the characters 23 and 24 respectively. When the device is opened and permanently set, it can then be secured in place by the threaded nut '25. The object, such as-a bracket held in place by the device, is indicated by the character 26 and this is shown as having a hole -2'l therethrough somewhat smaller than the opening 2'3, but large enough tosecure the boltshank 2|.
The head portion broadly indicated by the character A is substantially U-shaped in cross section. Ithas spaced sides 3! connected-across by an arched t0p32. The distance between the spaced sides 3! is a little less than the widtnof j the head 22 of the'bolt anchored.
Thetop 3'2 isprovided with a very small-'ira'gi ble tab 33 which temporarily fits over the bolt head 22 as clearly shown in the Figures 1, 2 and 5.
The footportion B is similarly U-shaped in cross section. It has side walls 4| and anxarched top 42 which are in substantial alignment with the head portion sides andtop 3| and 32. The
sidewalls and top 4| and 42, where they'blend or curve into'each other, are rounded off so that they'have radial sections 44 as indicated. The outerends of the walls and top 4| and "42 are 'formed to have an eccentric curve 43. 'The purpose and function of the radial section '44. and the eccentric curved end '43 .will be described .hereinafter.
The intermediate portion indicated by "the character C also has parallel sides'5l which ali n wide enough to receive and engage the bolt head 22 under the frangible tab 33. The part of the portion C adjacent to the foot portion B is similarly cut or punched away to form in the sides a recessed seat 55. The seat 55 is wider than the seat 54 and is designed to engage the bolt head 22 when the device is turned ninety degrees on the bolt, and is moved toward the head. The Figure 8 shows this engagement of the bolt head 22 of the seat 55.
The center of the intermediate portion C is referred to and indicated as the bed 52. This bed 52 is between the narrow seat 54 and the wide seat 55 and is bent to form a channel-like part capable of supporting the shank 2| of the bolt in longitudinal alignment when the bolt is in its preliminary or temporary position. Actually, in stamping out the device, the arched top is bent downward to form the bed. The side walls of the bed extend above the seats 54 and 55 and corners of the parallel walls proximate to the narrow seat 54 are rounded off and have what is referred to and indicated as radial sections 53.
It should be noted here that the distance between the top 45 of the eccentrically curved end of the foot part B and the longitudinal axis of the bolt shank 2] is greater than the distance between the top of the narrow seat 54 and the same longitudinal axis. This difierence makes possible the automatic setting of the device as hereinafter disclosed.
To use this novel anchor, the device is mounted longitudinally on the bolt as shown in the Figure 1. The head 22 is not too strongly held in the narrow seat 54 by the tab 33. The shank 2| lies in the channel or bed 52 and projects between the spaced sides 4| and under the arched top 42 of the foot portion. When mounted in this fashion, the device and the bolt head may be easily inserted through a wall opening such as the one designated by the character 23.
The article or object 26 is mounted on the bolt shank 2| as are also the conventional washer and nut 25. The tip 45 is then made to contact the inaccessible side of the wall near the hol and the nut is tightened. Gradually, as the nut is being tightened, the foot portion B is caused to rise, that is the arched top 42 thereof is caused to move away from the bolt shank. This is due to the fact that the important or pivotal points of pressure are first, at the tip which moves slightly and second, at the point on the narrow .seat 54 where it joins the intermediate portion C. The device then assumes the askew position shown in the Figure 6, wherein the reference characters A, B and 0 indicate the temporary position of the respective portions and wherein A, B and C indicate the askew position of the :said portions.
When the nut 25 has been sufficiently turned, the device will reach a position whereat the tab 33 of the head portion A frees or clears the head 22 of the bolt. The bolt head may be made free by'either or both of two ways. First, the tab 33 may be small enough or light enough to be ruptured or bent as shown and indicated for example 7 by the character 33a of the Figures '7 and 8.
Secondly, the radial section 53 of the intermediate portion C may be designed to permit the clearance of the bolt head 22 without fracturing the tab 33. Both methods may be combined so that the tab 33 is fractured simultaneously with the clearance of the bolt head and the radial section 53.
Immediately upon the clearance of the bolt 4 head, the device will hang down and assume the position shown in the Figure 7. This is due tot the fact that the head portion A is made heavier than the foot portion B. I
The nut 25 is further screwed on the bolt until the head 22 engages the seat 55 as shown in the Figures 8, 10, 11 and 15. Here the radius on the foot portion B, referred to and indicatedas the radial section 44, facilitates an even and regular engagement of the bolt head and the seat 55. As isindicated or suggested in the Figure 7, as the bolt head nears the wall, the foot portion will rise up over the edge of the head to assume the position shown in the Figure 8. The bottom edges of the aligned side walls 3|, 4| and 5| fit neatly and engage the wall surface as shown. When so locked in place, the device cannot move up or down since the seat 55 is recessed or set below the adjacent head portion A and below the sides of the contiguous bed 52.
If by chance the bolt head 22 is in a diagonal position when the device is locked in place, it will appear shown in the Figure 14. The radial section 44 and the consequently cut away arched top 42 makes possible a complete and perfect assembly without regard to the exact position or inclinations of the bolt head.
It should also be noted here that this device will work equally well with hexagonal or round head bolts; and also, if desired, the device may mounted on the nut end of the bolt so that the head may be manually turned to project the free end of the bolt behind the wall instead of in front as is shown in the Figure 1.
Having thus disclosed the invention in its preferred form, it is to be understood that the specific embodiment thereof as described and illusrated herein is not to be considered in a limited sense as there may be other forms or modifications of the invention which should also be construed to come within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with an attachment bolt, an anchor, comprising a longitudinal body member substantially U-shaped in cross section and having integral head, foot and intermediate portions mounted and longitudinally positioned on the said bolt, the said head portion having means capable of retaining the said bolt head in a temporary position, the said foot portion having curved pressure sensitive means capable of releasing the aforesaid retaining means and causing the body member to assume a lateral posi-- mounted on the said bolt, the said head portion. aving frangible means capable of retaining the bolt head in a temporar position, the said foot portion having an eccentric pressure sensitive,
means capable of causing a rupture of the frangible means and of allowing the body member to assume a dependent position, the said intermediate portion including a central bed capable of temporarily supporting the bolt shank, a firstseat proximate to the head portion for temporarily engaging the bolt head and a second seat proximate to the foot portion for permanently engaging the said bolt head, the said foot portion and central bed having radial sections slidably engageable with the bolt head facilitating the permanent engagement thereof.
3. In combination with an attachment bolt, an anchor, comprising a longitudinal body member substantially U-shaped in cross section and having integral head, foot and intermediate portions mounted and longitudinally positioned on the said bolt, the said head portion having a frangible tab capable of retaining the bolt in a temporary position, the said foot portion having a pressure sensitive eccentric en-d capable of causing a rupture of the said tab and thereby dispositioning the said bolt, the said intermediate portion including a central bed capable of temporarily supporting the bolt shank, a narrow seat proximate to the head portion capable of temporaril engaging together with the aforesaid frangible tab the head of the said bolt in a perpendicular position, a wide seat proximate to the foot portion capable of permanently engaging the head of the said bolt in a horizontal position, the said foot portion and central bed having radial sections slidably engageable with the bolt head facilitating the permanent engagement thereof.
4. In combination with an attachment bolt, an anchor, comprising a body member having integral head, foot and intermediate portions mounted on the said bolt, the said head portion being weighted, the said foot portion having a pressure sensitive eccentric and capable of dispositioning the said bolt, the said intermediate portion having a central bed capable of temporarily supporting the said bolt, the said foot portion and central bed having radial sections slidably engageable with the bolt head facilitating the permanent engagement thereof.
5. In combination with an attachment bolt, an anchor, comprising a longitudinal body member substantially U-shaped in cross section and having integral head, foot and intermediate portions mounted and longitudinally positioned on the said bolt, the said head portion having a frangible tab capable of retaining the bolt in a temporary position, the said foot portion having an eccentric end capable of causing a rupture of the said tab and thereby dispositioning the said bolt, the said intermediate portion including a central bed capable of temporarily supporting the bolt shank, a recessed narrow seat proximate to the head portion capable of temporarily engaging together with the aforesaid frangible tab the head of the said bolt in a perpendicular position, a recessed wide seat proximate to the foot portion capable of permanently engaging the head of the said bolt in a horizontal position, the said foot portion and central bed having radial sections slidably engageable with the bolt head facilitating the permanent engagement thereof, the said head and intermediate portions being heavier than the foot portion therefor capable of assuming a dependent position on the said bolt.
