' 4 Claims. (01. 242-68) This invention comprises novel and usefulv improvements in roll spacers for winding rolls, and more specifically pertains to removable collars which are detachably and adjustably secured upon roll arbors for assisting and evenly winding paper or other sheet material in rolls.
The principal object of this invention resides in the provision of an improved device for uniformly and evenly winding rolls of sheet material.
An important feature of the invention resides in the provision of a pair of sleeves which are slidably and removably secured upon a roll arbor together with roll spacers which are adjustably carried by said sleeves.
A further feature of the invention comprehends the provision of novel and improved mechanism for securing the sleeves upon the arbor in an easily removable manner, but yet one wherein the sleeves are securely held against spreading movement with respect to each other by the pressure exerted by the material being rolled.
And a final important feature of the invention to be specifically enumerated herein, resides in the provision of a pair of locking keys received in recesses in thearbor, and which prevent longitudinaloutward movement of the sleeves and the roll spacers carried thereby with respect to each other, and wherein the sleeves cooperate with the key structure to prevent accidental removement of the keys from their seated engagement in the arbor recesses and their abutting engagement with the shaft sleeves.
, These, together with various ancillary features and objects of the invention which will. laterbecome apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view, parts being broken away and shown in: section, showing the invention applied to a roll arbor in operative position for spacing or guiding a roll of material thereon;
Figure 2 is an exploded group perspective view 1 showing the elements constituting the left-hand spacer of Figure 1, a portion of the arbor and its construction being indicated;
Figure 3 is a group perspective View showing the roll spacer at the right side of Figure 1, the key being shown removed,but the spacensleeves and arbor being shown in assembled position;
Figure 4is a longitudinal central sectional view of the arbor, sleeves and spacer, together with thefretaining means all in properly assembled relation, parts of the arbor being shown in elevation, of the spacer assembly of Figure 3;

Referring now more specifically to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numeralsdesignat similar parts throughout the various views, there is indicated at ill a spindle 0r arbor of any suitable and known construction upon which is adapted to be formed a roll indicated generally at I2 of any suitable material such a paper or the like. This arbor is provided with axial extensions of reduced diameter constituting spindle 14 received in suitable arbor supportingbearings in the winding machine, not shown.
In order to properly roll a sheet of material such as that indicated at I2 in Figure 1 upon an arbor, it is customarily necessary to provide roll spacing collars or flanges constituting guides for the lateral edges of the sheet material, to insure the even winding of the roll. Further, in order to prevent the lateral pressure or force of the roll being wound from displacing these collars or spacing members, thus resultin in an unevenly and irregularly wound roll, it is necessary to provide a locking means for positively preventing relative outward displacement of the spacer collars with respect to each other. It is also an essential in such a devicethat means be: provided for readily permitting the disengaging of the spacing collars from the sides of the roll, and. from the arbor, whereby the roll may be removed from the arbor when its winding isLcompleted.
In accordance with these requisites of a com-- mercially practicable and satisfactory device, thehereinafter disclosed construction is employed;
At suitablelongitudinally spaced positions upon the arbor [0, the spacing being positioned by the width of the roll to be wound, there are-provided, preferably adjacent the spindles M, a pair of locking recesses l6 and I8 respectively As shown in Figure 3, and also indicated in;
Figures 4 and 6, the recess I6 comprises a preferably diametrical bore 16 which may be of any suitable cross section such as rectangular or square, and which extends through the arbor ill. The recess l8 comprises an annular channel or slot l8 encircling the arbor at the opposite end from the recess I6, which peripheral slot receives a locking key as set forth hereinafter.
Slidably and rotatably received upon the opposite ends of the arbor II), are a pair of sleeves 20 and 22, which are of any suitable length, but for convenience and simplicity of construction are preferably of the same external diameter and length. Both of these sleeves 20 and 22 are preferably threaded upon their adjacent external surfaces as at 24, and the outer extremity of the sleeve 22, adjacent the recess bore I6, is provided with oppositely disposed diametrical longitudinal notches 26.
A pair of spacer members are adjustably mounted upon each of the sleeves 2!] and 22. These spacer members comprise tubular cylindrical hubs 28 and 30 respectively screw-threadedly engaged upon the extremities 24 of the sleeves 20 and 22 respectively, as by means of internal threads 32 extending entirely through the hubs. At their inner extremities, the hubs 28 are provided with regularly extending disc-like perpendicular flanges 34 and 36 respectively, which are integrally or rigidly carried by the extremities of the hubs 28 and 30.
If desired, the circumference of the disc- like portions 34 and 36 may be cut away as at 38 to reduce the area of these flanges and provide greater clearance between the same and adjacent structure of the winding machine with which the roll arbors and spacers are associated.
Rigidly attached to the hubs 28 and 30 and the flanges 34 and 36 respectively, are radially extending lugs or ribs 40 and 42 which may be engaged by suitable tools for rotating and thereby adjusting the hubs and consequently the spacer collars upon the sleeves 20 as set forth hereinafter.
Attention is now directed to the key construction of Figures 2, 5 and 7. The key for retaining the sleeve 28 is illustrated as comprising an annular disc 44 having a radial slot 45 extending thereinto and comprising or constituting a U- shaped key or retainer, this U-shaped slot, embracing the annular slot l8 of the arbor Ill to thus prevent longitudinal movement of the key. Also extending axially inwardly from the key 44, is a diametrically reduced skirt portion 48 which as shown in Figure 5, is received within the confines of the slot [8, and has its reduced external diameter snugly received within the internal bore of the sleeve 20, this diametrically reduced portion being also of the same diameter as the arbor In. It will thus be seen that when the key is slid into the annular slot [8, and the sleeve 20 is then slid over the diametrically reduced skirt 48,.the key prevents further outward movement of the sleeve 20, while the latter retains the key against disengagement from its locking slots [8.
For an understanding of the construction of the locking key at the other end of the arbor, reference is now made to the construction shown in Figures 3, 4 and 6. In this embodiment, the key comprises a body portion 58 which is snugly but removably received in the recess or bore I6, and which has end surfaces 52 comprising shoulders which preferably terminate flush with the external surface of the arbor I0, and are shaped to form a continuation of said surface. It will thus be seen that these shoulders are adapted 4 to be received within the internal bore of the sleeve 22, and to be thus retained within the slot I6 by means of the confinement of the sleeve 22.
The body portion 50 of this key is further provided with extending lugs or portions 54 which are receivable in the above mentioned notches 26, when the sleeve 22 is slid towards the key and embraces the shoulders 52 thereof. Preferably, the outer ends of the extension 54 terminate substantially flush with and form a continuation of the periphery or circumference of the sleeve 22.
The operation of the device is as follows. After the strip of material is wound to a diameter of about 7 or 8 inches without the spacers, the operation is stopped, the journal boxes or bearings of the arbor l0 opened and lowered and the sleeves 20 and 22 with their respective spacer collars inserted upon the arbor and adjusted upon their threaded adjacent extremities 24, are slid upon the arbor l0, and the keys 44 and. 50 are inserted in their respective recesses I8 and IS. The sleeves 20 and 22 are now moved apart from each other into locking engagement with their respective keys as set forth hereinbefore. By means of a suitable tool, or by hand, if desired, the hub portions 28 and 30 are now rotated upon the sleeves 20 and 22 respectively until the spacer flanges 34 and 36 fit snugly against the ends of the partially wound roll of material. The journal boxes and arbor are then reassembled and the winding of the material is resumed and completed.
As will readily be seen, by the use of appropriate tools applied to the ribs 40 and 42, the spacer collars can be selectively tightened against the roll [2 during the winding of the same, or back off upon their threads 24 to release their pressure upon the roll. After the roll is wound, the latter procedure is adopted, whereupon the sleeves 20 and 22 may be slid toward each other on the arbor I0, thereby disengaging the sealing engagement of the sleeve upon the corresponding shoulders of their keys, permitting the latter to be removed from their key recesses, whereupon the sleeves and the attached spacing collars may be removed from the arbor and the roll [2 removed therefrom in a known manner.
It is particularly to be noted that one of the sleeves, such as the sleeve 22, is keyed to the arbor ID by means of the inter-engagement of the notches 26 with the extension 54, and the reception of the body 50 of the key in the recess l6, whereby the sleeve and its spacing collar hub 30 rotate with the arbor and this roll spacer collar is thereby pressed by the direction of pitch of the threads 24 to maintain a tight pressure against the roll 12. The other sleeve 20, is obviously not pinned to its arbor; whereby in some instances the sleeve 2|] together with the hub 28 and spacer flange 34 may be rotatable relative to the arbor.
From the foregoing, the manner of constructing and utilizing the invention together with its obvious advantages of operation will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary.
However, since numerous modifications and changes falling within the spirit of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that the embodiment shown and described in this application is to be regarded as illustrative of the principles of the invention 5 only, and that the latter is not to be limited to the exact construction shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to falling within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus disclosed and described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a winding roll, an arbor, spaced sleeves slidable on said arbor and threaded on their adjacent ends, collars adjustably carried by said sleeves for spacing a roll therebetween, said collars having hubs threaded for adjustable engagement with said ends, said collars having radial flanges on their adjacent extremities, and means for securing said sleeves to said arbor, said means including recesses in said arbor, a locking-key engageable in each recess, a shoulder on each key receivable in said sleeve for preventing disengagement of said key, said key comprising a body portion receivable in said recess and flush with the surface of said arbor, said key shoulder consisting of a radially extending portion abuttingly engaging the outer end of said sleeve.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein one recess comprises a bore through said arbor and a notch in the outer end of one sleeve for receiving said radially extending portion.
3. In a winding roll, an arbor, spaced sleeves slidable on said arbor and threaded on their adjacent ends, collars adjustably carried by said sleeves for spacing a roll therebetween, said collars having hubs threaded for adjustable engagement with said ends, said collars having radial flanges on their adjacent extremities, and means for securing said sleeves to said arbor, said means including recesses in said arbor, a locking key engageable in each recess, a shoulder on each key receivable in said sleeve for preventing disengagement of said key, said key comprising a body portion receivable in said recess and flush with the surface of said arbor, said key shoulder consisting of a radially extending portion abuttingly engaging the outer end of said sleeve, one of said recesses comprising an annular slot in the circumference of said arbor, said body portion comprising a U-shaped member seated in said recess.
4. The combination of claim 3 including the combination of claim 1 wherein said recess comprises a bore through said arbor and a notch in the outer end of one sleeve for receiving said radially extending portion.
