In the device of the present invention as shown in Fig. 4, the faces of all of the parallelograms. in the lower and in the upper template-units, are parallel either to the horizontal primary flaps 22, 33 or primary flaps 25 and 34, that are'30" above a horizontal, when the device is not in use. Therefore, the equivalent angles of all of the projected parallelograms are identical. In as much as the angle of any projected parallelogram in our apparatus is changed there is accomplished an automatic change in the shapej'of all of'such parallelograms.
When either a lower or upper primary template unit, or the combination of both of such f-units, is folded forwardly from its 30 starting-point, previously described, the lengthfof the sides of the projected parallelo-grams can not change, be cause such parallelograms are "constructed of rigid material. The angles of theparallelograms, however, can be changed becausathe sides thereof are hingedly connected. When a paper blank which has been previously cut and scored as is shown at Fig. 3 is placed in position above the lower template unit, and the upper template unit is then laid over it, the weight of the upper template unit, plus a slight downward pressure and pulled upwardly. and forwardly, so as to have.

This upward and forward movement of the two template pieces with the paper blank embraced therebetween will effect the breaking of the paper blank, along the various fold and score lines delineated by the cooperating flaps 30 and.35 of the respective template pieces.
The movement of the two sections of the upper template piece toward and away from each other about the hinges 34' is controlled by chain 38, one end of which is anchored in the frame 32 and the upper end of which is anchored in the upper frame section 32'.
" For the purpose of guiding the positioning of 'the upper template piece for exact superposition of its flaps and the paper blank upon the upper surface of the lower template piece in absolutely correct position relative to the flaps of such lower template piece, the following guide members are provided.
The base piece or block 20 element is provided with two upright anchor irons 40,40, the distance between which is exactly the Width of the paper blankto*'b'e-- broken by the mechanism. Extending from the upper extremities of the base of the lowertemplatepiece at each.-
This conforof the lower template upper corner is a pair of extensions 4'l', 4| ,having. rounded corners at 42 which are similarly spaced the exact distance of the width of the paper blank to be positioned upon the template piece. 'The upper extremities of the upper template piece are provided with two anchor irons 43, 43, the legs of which fit exactly into the space between the ex-' tensions 4|, so that when the upper template piece is superimposed upon the lower template piece after the paper blank has been placed upon the latter, the upper template piece will be exactly positioned by the cooperating engagement of the two extensions 4| by the anchor irons 43' and at the lower end of the template assembly by the proper positioning of the upper template structure intermediate the two anchor irons extending upwardly from the lower template piege .I Prior to the superposition of the upper template piece upon thelower, the paper blank 31 is placed upon the lower'template piece with the straight edges of the paper blank between the extensions 41, the paper blank extending downwardly between such extensions as shown in Fig. 4.
In Figs. 11 and 12, we have illustrated a construction of the upper portion of the lower die or template unit which is to be used in forming or breaking blank sheets which have a straight top edge, for instance, the page of a book, rather than one which has an overhanging portion as in the greeting card illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3.
By an overhang we mean the portion of the blank sheet which in Figs. 4 and 5 is illustrated as overhanging the upper edge of the die or template units when the breaking of the sheet is being effected. Without such overhanging portion of the blank the lower die or template unit is to be' constructed in accordance with the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 11 and 12.
In such embodiment, the upper portion of the lower die or template unit is shown with its slots 45 limiting the downward movement of the upper sectionof the former and therefore of the sheet. The lower die or template unit is provided with a longitudinal slot 46, the metal of the die or template unit being bent slightly backwardly and below the surface, as at 41, so as to act as a frictional grip for the blank sheet being placed upon the unit. v p w The blank sheet 48 is placed upon the surface of the unit and pushed upwardly until the upper edge thereof abuts the upper edge of the slot 46 with the bent-under portion of the paper being pressed downwardly to a position below the upper surface of the remainder of the sheet. ,-In Edge. 13 and 14 is shown a scaffold and counterweight arrangement for facilitating the utilization of an-apparatus embodying our invention. With such arrangement, the two movable dieor. templatexpieces-are incorporated in a supporting structure in such manner that the horizontal'portion of the scafiold supports the bottom movable :die or template piece and the upper movable'die or template piece is suspended from the vertical-sectionof the-scafiold.
In the operation of the breaking apparatus embodying thettwoxnovable die or template piecesasshownin Figs. 4 and 5, the operator is required.
to-removethe upper movable 'die or template piec from its superposed position upon "the lower movable die or template piece before a blank sheet which is :toconstitute the finished card is to be placed in position upon the lower-template piece. The upper template piece is then necessarily picked up from its position upon a supporting surface to one side of the lower template piece and placed over the blank sheet and lower template .piece. As the breaking of the blanks to constitute-the finished card is done-by an operator at a considerable and rapid pace, the necessity of. removing and replacing the upper template piece for each operation .is extremely tiresome to the operator.
We have, therefore, devised the scaffold, and counterweight arrangement illustrated in Figs. L3 and 14, whereby the upper movable dieor template piece, in. order to place the blank sheet imposition upon the lower movable .die or tem.- plate, piece, need only be raised by grasping its forward edge to permit the counterweight, by
means of wbichitis suspended from the scafiold: frame, to do a substantial portion of'the work of the upper template unit, reposit on such unit upon the: blank now placed over'the'lowerunit. In such scaffold and counterweight arrangement, 68' designates the lower frame structure from the rear end of, which extends upwardly the verticalrframestructuretl. The two frames are held "in right" angular position by thQ Sld6' pieces-62.

The upper-movable die or'template unitis con-. stituted of side-pieces 65 and front blocks 6E con-. stituting 'a reinforcing means and a point of: anchor for the'chains El, 6'! which are anchored at; their opposite ends in blocks 68, 68. On the outer face of each of the blocks E35 and; ate. .pointnearer the hinge of the two halvesofthe upper template unit are positioned-two eye?- lets -69 to which are tied the ends of cord IB passing through "pulleys H and secured by a pair; oiwhooks 1-2 .to a counterweight 13. 65 are-thus placed toone side of the-median lines of the blocks 65, so that the counterweight, by meansof its cord H1, pulls against the back half ofuthe template unit and thereby cause the. chains 5': to be taut. The block 55, in additionto acting as a means 'for attaching the cords suspending the counterweight, constitute rein-- forcing means for the structure.
Extending upwardly from the rear edge of the-- lower template unit is a pair of pins or stops I4.
When the top unit or template piece is raised.in:-
preparation for the sheets to be broken to be inserted. or positioned upon the bottom template,
limiting the movement of the top template piece,- its angle iron guides are kept in longitud nal alignment. with the slots in the lower template piece. When the upper unit is lowered during th operation of the breaking of the blank there is, as shown in Fig. 13, aspace between the stops 14. and the upper edge of the top template unit. This arrangement perm ts the operator to lift the top template piece and place it down on, and parallel to, the blank, as shown in Fig. 4 and be. sure he isworking in proper longitudinal align-- ment.
Thetop template unit, on each side of the upper edge thereof, is .cut away as shown at 55 to permit the. top element .to pass the angle iron guides on the. bottom un t and to place the top unit in proper longitudinal alignment with the bottom. unit.
The complete former or breaking apparatus as shown in Figs. 13 and 14 makes possible the extremely rap d disengagement of the two movable die or template units from the intermediately disposed blank of sheet material, so as to remove such blank after it has been broken and to insertanother blank .or series of blanks to break and form. another card unit.

for a gift card or the like, and for bending said card along the fold lines thus provided, to a temporary, completely erected position in order to facilitate subsequent manual erection of the -card to a like position by the user of the card, without the aid of said device, the latter comprising a template mechanism consisting of upper and lower movable units adapted to be assembled in substantially parallel superimposed relation with the originally fiat blank, each of said units having an upper and a lower section, hingedly connected along a portion of their edges, the 'upper and lower sections of each unit being'mai'n- 'tainable at a predetermined angle to each other, 'each unit containing a plurality of smaller hinged parts constructed and arranged in such manner that they always move with, and parallel one of the surfaces of the units with which they are integral, the two units, when superimposed with a cut and scored blank interposed between them, being foldable in unison along their horizontal medial ,line, and which, when a forward movement is imparted to their top edges. while their bottom edges are held almost rigid, effect the folding of the portions of the blank between the two units, the smaller hinged parts of such units, and the portions of the blank between the smaller hinged parts, the folding of all of such parts and portions being into planes parallel to the planes assumed by the upper and lower sections of the combined upper and lower units.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the template mechanism includes in both of itsunits spaced guiding elements forv maintaining the units, when superimposed with the originally flat blank therebetween, in exact cooperative relationship of their respective parts.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1, whereinthe smaller flap-like parts provided on the template units are constructed and arranged to besuperimposed one upon the other with the flat blank pressed between them, themovable units acting to break said blank by virtue of a complemental action thereon when the upper template unit is pressed toward the lower template unit, with the hinged parts thereof moving the corresponding portions of the blank out of their original plane.
4. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the template units have transverse hinges about which a substantial portion of each of said units may be swung, the smaller hinged parts being so constructed and arranged that by lifting a portion of the template units about said transverse hinges thereof, said smaller hinged parts will be caused to project from the planes of the units to an extent adequate to bend such blank to its fully erected position.
5. A device as claimed in claim 1, in which the lower template unit is provided with a fixedly positioned stop, limiting the rearward movement of the upper section of the body portion of the template unit to an extent approximately 30' out of the plane of the remaining body portion of said template unit.
6. A device as claimed in claim 1, in which the lower template unit is provided with a fixedly positioned stop, limiting the rearward movement of the upper section of the body portion of the template unit to an extent approximately 30 out of the plane of the remaining body portion of ill) said template unit and means for limiting the forwardmovement of said upper section of the body portion of the template unit to a position approximately 45* from the horizontal position of the lower body portion of said unit.
7. A device as claimed in claim 1, including means upon the upper template unit limiting the "movement of the two body portions thereof about their intermediate transverse hinge to a degree approximately 30 from the plane of the horizontal body portion of said unit.
8. A device as claimed in claim 1, in which each of the template units is provided with cooperating guide elements automatically positioning the two units when superimposed with the blank therebetween, with their edges in substantial alignment. H
9. A device as claimed in claim 1, in which the lower template unit is provided near its upper edge with a horizontally extending slot, the edge of the material defining the upper edge of such slot being bentslightly downwardly and backwardly to constitute a frictional engagement for the upper edge of a blank positioned upon such lower unit.

A device as claimed in claim 1, in which the lower template unit is provided near its upper edge with a horizontally extending slot, the edge of the material defining the upper edge of such slot being bent slightly downwardly and backwardly to constitute a frictional engagement for the upper edge of a blank positioned upon such lower unit, thematerial forming the lower edge of said slot being similarly bent downwardly and backwardly to'permit thev ready insertion of the blank under the frictional engagement, said frictional engagement, due to its bent back position; permitting a sliding movement of the blank upon the lower unit when the upper template unit iS. superimposed thereupon and the template meche anism is operated to break the cut and scored blank. j g
11. A device as claimed in claim 1, in which the lower template unit is provided near its upper edge F with a horizontally extending slot, the edge, of
the material defining the upper edge of such slot being bent slightly downwardly and backwardly. to constitute a frictional engagement for the up,- per edge of a blank positioned upon such lower unit, the material on each side of said downwardly and inwardly bent edge of such slot constituting abutment stops for the blank positioned upon the lower template unit.
12. A device as claimed in claim 1, including a scaffold and counterweight arrangement, said scaffold having a horizontal section supporting the two template units in their operative position upon the blank, and a vertical section within which is suspended at counterweight connected by a pair of cords to the upper movable unit and effective to support said unit by means of said counterweight above said lower template unit.
13. A device as claimed in claim 1, including a scaffold and counterweight arrangement, said scaffold having a horizontal section supporting the two template units in their operative position upon the blank, and a vertical section within which is suspended a counterweight connected by a pair of cords to the upper movable template unit and effective to support said unit by means of said counterweight above said lower template unit, the cords from said counterweight being anchored to said top template unit at points forward of its horizontal hinged element.

A device as claimed in claim 1, including a; scaffold and. counterweight. arrangement, said scafiold. having a horizontal sectionsupporting thetwo template unitsin their operative position upon. the, blank, and a. vertical. section within which is suspended a counterweight connected by a. pair of cords to the upper movableunit and efwhich. is suspended a counterweight connected by apair of cords to the upper movable unit and effective to support said unit by means of said counterweight. above, said lower template unit, said scaffold havin across its bottom section a block limiting the movement of the upper section of the body portion of the lower template. unit to an extent approximately 30 from the plane ofthe lower portion of said template unit.

A device a. claimed in claim 1, in which hinged smaller flap-like parts provided on the bottom unit of the template. mechanism have a contour slightly inside of. the outlines of the designs to be formed, and in which the hinged smaller flap-like parts provided. in the top unit of the template mechanism have, a. contour slightly outside of the outlines of the designs to be formed, so that when. the two units of the template mechanism are superimposed one upon the other, with a fiat blank interposed between them, the hinged smaller flap-like parts. of the. lower unit pass upwardly. through the apertures made in the blank by similar hinged smaller flaplike parts of the blank moving forwardly and upwardly out of their original planes, and so that the combined smaller flap-like partsofthe lower unit and the smaller flap-like parts of 'theblank pass through the apertures made in. the upper unit by similar smaller hinged parts in the.
upper unit, moving forwardly and upwardly out or their original planes, to efiect a forming'and breaking movement on the blank.

A device as. claimed claim 1,.including a scafiold and counterweight arrangement, Said scaffold having a horizontal section, supporting the two templateunits. in their operative position upon the blank, and, a vertical section within which is suspended a counterweight connectedby a pair of cords.v to the upper movable template unit. and effective tosupport saidunit. by means of said. counterweight above said lower template unit, the cords from said counterweight. being anchored to said top template .unit' at points forward of its horizontal hinged elements, including a pair of pins extending upwardly fromthe rear edge of the lower template unit, said p'air ofpins being efiective to limitthe upward and rearward movement of the template unit when the front edge of the upper unit is lifted by the counterweight arrangementito an open position in re,- lation to they front edge of the lower unit, and" to hold the upper unit slightly above vertical alignment with the, lower unit preparatory to the breaking operation while the blank is being inserted between the units, whereby when an up ward and forward movement is applied to the upper edges of the superimposed units with the blank interposed between them, the first action is a slight downward movement of the upper template unit away from the pins thereby forcing the blank out from under the frictional arrangement of the lower template unit, and-pressing the entire blank firmly to the upper surface of the lower template unit to inaugurate the breaking and forming process.
