- This invention relates to awnings" and more particularly to metal orv fixed awnings: having fixed openings or louvres.
It is an object of this invention to provide -an improved awning of the-kind -to-be moregspecifi cally described hereinafter, which may be readily disassembled for Shipping or storing andnwhich may be readily assembled where it is to be used.
' The construction of the awning is such that'there are provided a' front and side -membersas aunit' which may be quickly and-easily assembled'wtogether and fixed in aprefabricated frame-which may be fixed on the building.
Another object of this invention is to provide a metalawning of this kind which isso constructed? and arranged astobe about'fiftype'rcent (50%) lightproof from outsideand which isapproximately ninety-five percent (-95%) rainproof.
Still another object of this invention is-to'provide an improved awning of'this kind which may-E:
be made of a lightmetal as aluminumwhich is constructed With-pre-finished separatepanels to ,be assembled by persons unskilled in-such work'in a ready and efficient manner.
-With theaboveand other objects in--'view,--my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details ofco-nstruction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

The transverse member-1'26 is substantially U- shaped in-configuration having I the bight -21 thereof-extending outwardly ofwthe frame 58' and having a verticallyextending'flange 28 fixed to or formed on the inner edgeof the upper arm!!! thereof. The side panels I! are formed with peripheral frame members '30.: The frame 30 is substantially triangular-shaped in 1 outline and the frame members: are Z*-shap'ed-in cross section,
having a central web13l' and oppositely-disposed flanges 32 on the opposed side edges of theweb 3 l "Two-"of the-framemembe'rs 390i" the side panels are disposed in right angularly related position and the third frame member is inclined between the free outer ends thereof. Louvres 34 are fixed to the inwardly extending flanges 32 on the inner side of the frame members 30. The louvres 34 are inclined downwardly and outwardly with the low- .er end of each louvre disposed outwardly of and overlapping in spaced relation the upper fixed end of the louvre directly below it.
The lower frame member 3B of the side panel I! is adapted to overlie the outer upwardly extending arm of the base frame 58 and is adapted to be fixed thereto by bolts 35 or other suitable attaching means. The bolts 35, for quick assembly of this unit, may be of the self-tapping type which are easily inserted for holding the assembly in such a manner that it may be readily knocked down.
The Z-shaped frame members 30 along the rear vertical member of the side panel are disposed with one flange 32 extending outwardly and rearwardly and are adapted to overlie the arm 22 of one of the vertical U-shaped base frame members. Both of the side panels [1 are constructed in the same manner so that the description of one will fit the description of the other.
The front panel [6 is formed of a frame, having 7 horizonta1 Z-shaped members 36 and vertical U-shaped members 31 having a flange 38 fixed to the inner arm 39 of the U-shaped frame member 31. Louvres 40 are fixed between the inclined side frame members 31, being fixed at their ends to the upper side of the flange 38. The downwardly extending flange 4| of the lower Z-shaped front panel frame member 36 is adapted to overlie the bight 21 of the horizontal U-shaped member 28 and may be fixed thereto by selftapping screws 35 as above described.
The upper end of the front panel it merely abuts the vertical members of the base frame l8 and is only secured thereto by a transverse cover plate 42. The cover plate 42 is substantially U-shaped in cross section, having one arm thereof fixed to the bight of the vertica1 members 19, and the other arm fixed to the upper flange 43 of the upper Z-shaped frame member 36 of the front panel frame. By this construction a substantially triangular opening remains at the corner formed by the junction of the front panel IS with the upper end of the base frame I 8. For sealing this opening, an end cap 44 is provided, which is substantially U-shaped, having both arms fitting underneath the arms of the cover 42 and having the bight 45 thereof covering the opening thus left. The end cap 44 is disposed then at right angles to the cover 42.
By a construction of this kind, the base frame 18 may be first constructed or prefabricated and fixed to the opening about a window. The side panel members l1 are then put in place and the flanges of the edges of the side panel which abut the edges of the base frame ar fixed thereto by screws or other suitable fastening devices. When the side panels 11 areflxecl in place on the base frame l8, the front panel l6 may be set in place with its lower edge engaging the outer horizontal member of the base frame and the side edges engaging the inclined upper outer edge of the side members.
The transverse cover plate 42 when fixed in place by screws as 35 and the end caps 44, complete the erection of this metal awning. The louvres 40 of the front panel l6 are formed substantially the same as the louvres 34 of the side panels with the addition of a downwardly bent outer terminal portion 41 overlying the upper end of the lower louvre. A construction of this kind provides a metal awning which has substantially fifty percent outside vision and is approximately ninety-five percent rainproof.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
An improved metal awning comprising a frame including a pair of L-shaped side members, the vertical leg of each of said members being U-shaped in cross-section with the side flanges thereof extending forwardly and the connecting web adapted to be disposed against a supporting structure for attachment thereto, the horizontal leg of each of said members being U-shaped in cross-section, a horizontal rearwardly opening channel connecting member extending between the outer ends of said horizontal legs, said connecting member being formed with an upstanding flang along the rear edge of the upper portion thereof, a pair of side panels each including a triangular panel frame having vertical, horizontal, and diagonal peripheral members, each including a connecting web and oppositely extending flanges formed along the inner and outer edges of said latter web, the outer flanges of the horizontal and vertical peripheral members being adapted to overlie the outer flanges of said horizontal and vertical legs of said L-shaped side members, horizontally extending side louvres secured between said vertical and diagonal peripheral members, a front panel including a frame having upper and lower peripheral members of Z-shaped cross-section, and rearwardly opening U-shaped side peripheral members, horizontally extending louvres secured between said side peripheral members, the outer legs of said side peripheral members overlying the outer flange of said diagonal peripheral member, the outer leg of said lower peripheral member overlyin the web of said horizontal connecting member, a substantially U-shaped cover member ngaging over the top ends of said vertical legs of said frame side members and said upper peripheral member, and fastening means extending through said overlying flanges, legs and webs for securing said side panels and said front panel on said frame and to each other.
