In practical use of the device, the base member I2 is mounted on the bed of a lathe machine or the like so that by pivoting the base member the tool 36 will be at right angles to the work carried by the machine.
The actuating bars 68 and 10 are mounted in the upper portion 52 so that one end of one of the bars, for example 68, projects outwardly from one side of the upper portion and the outer end of the other bar 16 projects outwardly from the opposite side of the upper portion. Spring arms 88 and 90 carried by the opposite side of the upper portion 80 aid in retaining the bars in the aforestated position.
When the hand gripping bar 92 at the upper end of lever 18 is pulled away from the work carried by the lathe, the carrier 26 is pushed forwardly relative to the base and the rib B2 of locking pin 60 engages a notch or pin recess 94 provided in rib 32, holding the carrier in an advanced position.
The carrier and base member then travel longitudinally against the work with the longitudinallv movable portion of the lathe bed and u on reaching the desired point whereby it is des red to disengage the tool 36 from the work. the forwardly disposed actuating bar, for example 68, will engage an adiustable sto (not shown) provided on the lathe at a selected point which will extend the outer end of bar 68 into the upper port on 52. whereby the lever bar 14 will disen age the no ch in bar 68. rocking the lever bar M so that the rib 62 of the locking pin 68 disengages notch M and the spring 50 w ll return the carrier to its normal posit on relative to the base.
Obviously, if desired. the base member may be pivoted in a complete circle so that the tool at the other end of the carrier may engage the work with rib 62 of locking pin Ml en aging the notch or pin recess 96 in rib 32. The outer end of actuating bar l will then be the element engaging the stop to return the carrier to its normal position relative to the base member.
In view of the foregoing descr ption taken in con unction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understandin of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in th s art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
'It is to be understood. however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A lathe attachment comprising a base member, a tool carrier slidably mounted on said base member for longitudinal movement, a support carried by said base member, means carried by said support and connected to said carrier for moving the latter, said support including a housing, a rockable lever disposed in said housing, a locking member carried by said lever and including a rib, said carrier having a plurality of longitudinal spaced recesses for receiving said rib to retain the carrier in an outwardly adjusted position relative to said base member, means carried by said locking member normally urging, the rib into locking engagement with said car rier, a slidable actuating member engageable with a stop to rock said lever for disengaging said rib from a selected one of said recesses, and
resilient means normally urging said carrier to its normal position relative to said base member.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said means carried by said locking member normally urging the rib into locking engagement with said carrier includes an arcuate spring member, said housing including an upper wall spaced parallel to said carrier, the end portions of said arcuate spring member bearing against the upper Wall of said housing to urge the locking member toward said carrier.
3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said actuating member includes a bar slidably carried by said carriage and movable perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said lever.
4. The combination of claim 1 wherein said actuating member includes an elongated bar slidably carried by said carrier and having a notch 'for receiving one end of said lever, the end of said'leverizreceived in said notch including a sloping surface, said notch including an inclined surface bearing against the sloping surfaceof said lever to force the lever out of engagement with said notch during sliding movement of saidv bar in one direction.
5. A lathe attachment comprising a base memher, a tool carrierslidably mounted on said base member for longitudinal movement, a support carried by said base member, means carried by said support and connected to said carrier for moving the lat er. said support including a housing, a rockable lever disposed in said housing, a locking member carried by said lever and including a rib, said carrier having a plurality of longitudinal spaced recesses for receiving said rib to retain the carrier in an outwardly adjusted position relative to said base member, means carried by said locking member normally urging the rib into locking engagement with said carrier, a wedge member slidable on said carrier for rocking said lever to disengage said rib from a selected one of said recesses, and resilient means normally urging said carrier to its normal position relative to said base member. 6. A lathe attachment comprising a base member. a tool carrier slidably mounted on said base member for longitudinal movement, a support carried by said base member, means carried by,
