FRANCIS H. BENTON, OF RENOVO, PENNSYLVANIA.
sTo RAGE-TANKl FOR PETROLEUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,190, dated November 29, 1881.
Application led June 7, 1881. (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. BENTON, of Renovo, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain useful Improvements in Storage-Tanks for' Petroleum, of which the following is a specification.
In carrying my invention into effect I construct the tank as shown in the figure ot the accompanying drawing, which represents the tank and water reservoir or chamber in section.
The tank A is made air-tight by means of the cover a. The cover a isv conical in form, and is provided with the covered man-hole b, through which the contents ot the tank may be gaged, and the cover is provided at its apex with the bent pipeB, which communicates with the reservoir D, which is supported upon the roof of the tank by means ot' suitable benches, which are adapted for holding it in a horizontal position, and which reservoir is tilled, or partially lled, with water, and from the top yof the reservoir l) leads the pipe E, which may lead down to and under the ground, as shown, for conducting the gases` from the tank a long distance from the tank, where they may be allowed to escape, or they may be conducted to a furnace and burned and saved. In the pipe B, at a point above the level of the water in the reservoir D, is placed the air-inlet cock c, through which air is admitted to the oil-tank to prevent the formation ofa vacuum when the tank is being emptied.
I am aware that it is common to conduct the the method ot' thus carrying ot't gas and of 4o utilizing it for fuel, &c., is well-known, the appliances heretofore in use for these purposes have not been found as convenient as could be desired. A gas-conducting pipe leading through the bottom of a tank necessarily eX- poses the tank to leakage, and where the washing-vesselis not arranged above the tank more space is required for accommodating the appa ratns than is necessary.
The tank is tilled and emptied through the pipes F F at the bottom ot' the tank.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- .A
The combination, with the stationary tankA, of the washing-reservoir D, supported on top of the tank, the short pipe B, connecting the top ofthe tank with the bottom of the reservoir, and thecon d uctin g-pipe E, extendingfrom the top ot' the reservoir downward on the ontsde of the tank and underground, whereby petroleum gas shall be conveniently puritied for illuminating purposes, as set forthi FRANCIS H. BENTON.
