SAW-TEMPERING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,184, dated November 29, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be ttknown that I, ELIAs C. ATKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county ot Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improved Apparatus for Tempering Saws, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for tempering saws in which two compound metal plates arranged to clamp a saw between them operate in conjunction with furnaces and heatdistributing devices; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a saw-tempering apparatus with a means for holding in position a series of tempering blocks or sections, which will permit the sides of the sections used in tempering to retain their heat, while their supportingbar is kept cool and free from warping 5 second, to provide each block or section of the tempering-.plates with recesses to receive heated air from a furnace and distribnte the heat throughout the whole length of the sections; third, to provide each heatingplate with aflue or tube in the sections for carrying the heated air through them; fourth, to provide hot-air chambers for receiving the heated air from the furnace after said airhas passed through the sections of one plate, and to distribute said heated air into and through the sections of the other plate before said heated airis discharged 5 fifth, to provide means for carrying the heated air direct through the sections of both plates sixth, to afford ameans for regulating the degree of heat which each section of each plate receives independent of its neighbor; seventh, to provide means for tempering saws which will prevent the saws from being warped, or, if already warped in the process of manufacture, to strengthen them and bring them to an even tension in the process of tempering. These objects I accomplish by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, with sectional views of several parts. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section taken at the line x x. Fig. 3 is a central horizontal section of one of the series of blocks or sections which form the tempering-plates, and Fig. 4 is a modified form of Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
A represents a base with an upright clamping-frame, O O O. On the base A, between the clamp-uprights C O, are supports B B', on which the hot-air receiving vand distributing chambers D D' are mounted. The central portion of the supports B B' are each provided with a vertical groove, t, for guiding the slide w at the base of the lower tempering-plate. At one or both ends of the apparatus is located a furnace, I.
The top tempering-plate is constructed as follows, (both plates being alike, only one will be described:) The bar E,to which the blocks or sections G G', Sto., are attached, extends the entire length ofthe machine. This bar E is cast hollow, with sides, top, bottom, and ends, forming a chamber, F, which is water or air tight. Said chamber is provided with an inlet-pipe, a, for cold water or air, at one end, and a discharge-opening, c, at the other end. Thus when cold water or cold air is passed. through the bar E, it is kept perfectly cool and straight, and the sections G G', 85e., below are prevented from warping or working out of line on their tempering-faces. At the base of each side ot the bar E are projecting iianges E2, through which are formed a series ot' holes adapted to receive screws or bolts, by means of which the sections G G', Src., are made fast to the bar. All of the sections G, G', G2, G5, G4, G5, G6, and G7 are alike. The numbering of each independent of the other is simply to distinguish various parts ofthe same thing, as shown.
InvFig. 3 G represents a horizontal section of one of the tempering blocks or sections, which is constructed of cast-iron, with holes v and fu' extending through it and crossing each other in the center. These holes combined form a chamber for receiving the hollow cross= casting H5, to which the hot-air-conducting pipes H4 are attached, also the side pipes, t' i', as shown.
In Fig. 1 the sections G4 and GG above and G5 G7 below are shown in section vertically. The hot-air pipe H4 from the furnace I or l', or both, conveys the hot air through the sections G G', 85e., from end to end, the hot air being discharged into the hot-air chambers D and D' IOO ou each side ot the sections through the pipes t' z", as shown by the arrows Z and 7c, the quantity of heated air thus discharged into the side chambers, D D', from the pipe H4 being regulated by dampers m', one of which is shown in position in Fig. 2. The heated air discharged from the pipe H4 and its branches into the chambers D D' is then forced into the pipe H of the upper set of heating-sections through its side branches, as shown in Fig. l. The section GG shows the air coming into the pipe H from the chamber D at e, while section G4 shows it coming in from the chamber D at f. Each branch opening into the chambers D D' is provided with a damper, as shown, to regulate, rst, the iow of heated air from the pipe H4 into said chambers; second, to regulate the discharge from said chambers, as before described. rIhe pipe H4 may have a furnace only at one end, and the other end of the pipe H4 may connect direct with the pipes H H', as shown in dotted lines at H2, in which case the side chambers, D D', may be dispensed with and the heated air conducted direct from the furnace through all the sections G G', Snc., ot' the top and bottom tempering-plates; but I prefer the side chambers, as before described.
The upper tempering-plate is made fast t0 the frame G and the lower tempering-plate is adapted to be raised and lowered by any ordinary mechanical device-such, for instance, as a lever, a screw, or by hydraulic power.
It is obvious that the top plate may be moved and the lower one held stationary, if desired.
In Fig. 4t a modified form of the temperingblock is shown, adapted for tempering circular saws. In this case the block G8 revolves and the heated air from the furnaces W W is forced through the radial spaces or holes s and discharged near the center at s2.
The operation of' my improved furnace is as follows, to wit: The heated air from the furnace I is forced by the blast through the pipe J or draft through the pipe H4, and is discharged into the chambers D D', thus heating the lower sections ot' the tempering-plate by radiation. The heated air in passing out to the chimneys through the heating-pipe H and its branches also heats the sections of the upper temperingplate, and the quantity and regularity of heat given to each section is regulated by the dampers m m' and their rods nu'. The saw Y to be tempered is placed between the faces of the two tempering-plates, and one of the tempering-plates is forced either up or down, according to which of the plates is made to move, and
the saw is rmly clamped between them until the proper temper is produced, after which the saw is removed.
I am aware that for many years prior to my invention perforated metal plates have been used in tempering saws. I therefore do not broadly claim such a device; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The bar E, with chamber F, and inlet and outlet pipes a c, combined with the sections G G', &c.,-substantially as shown and described.
2. A tempering-plate consisting of the bar E and blocks or sections G G', Ste., combined with hot-air-discharge pipes H H', having side branches, t' t', heating-pipe H4 and its side branches, the furnace I, and side chambers or dues, D D', substantially as set forth.
3. In combination,the lower and upper tempering-plates, constructed of hollow barsE and perforated blocks or sections G G', &c., substantially as specified.
4. The radiating pipe H, with side pipes, z' i', combined with thefurnace I, the side chambers, DD',and the sections G,snbstantiallyas shown and described.
5. In combination with the radiating pipes t' i' and side chambers, D D'the dampers m and their operating-rods n n', substantially as shown and described.
