Description

March 21 1950 M. JARNAGIN suncsaow PISTOL Filed July 17, 1948 INVENTOR. 'MMVl/V JAR/VA Gl/V Patented Mar. 21, 1950 UNITED. STATES PATENT 2,501,568 I j t 7 SLINGSHOT PISTOL Marvin Jarnagin, Detroit, Mich. I f Application ul 1 7,1948, SerialNo.39,259.- l
4 Claims. (01. 124-17) in a pistol like manner.
Another object of the invention is to generally improve slingshots, and to provide a slingshot which is comparatively simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and emcient in use.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent as thedescription proceeds, reference being made from time to time to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the within disclosure, in which drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device embodying my invention and illustrating the relation of the parts when the device is in the cooked position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device illustrated in Fig. 1 after the missile has been projected.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the device shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a rear elevational view of the device shown in Fig. 8. 1
Fig. 5 is a section taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will be understood that in the embodiment herein disclosed the reference character I indicates a supporting member which simulates the barrel of a pistol, to which is secured a hand grip 8. The members 1 and 8 are preferably mortised, as at 9, and are preferably secured together by means of a bolt ID, or other suitable means.
stapled, as at H, to the top of the supporting member I, and extending longitudinally thereof and overhanging the ends is a pair of heavy wire members I2 and I3 which are preferably secured together along a predetermined area, as at M. The free portions l5 and I6 are arranged to spring outwardly in diverging manner as shown in Fig. 2.
The forward ends of the members l2 and I3 are bent outwardly and upwardly to form supports I! and I8 for elastic members I9 and 20. The rear ends of the members l2 and Marc bent up wardly and outwardly to form fingers 2| and 22. which are arranged to hold the missile carrying element 23, in which is positioned a missile 24 to be projected. It will be noted that the missile 24 is positioned in the member 23 behind the fingers 2| and 22, so that the device remains in cocked position so long as the iin gers 2| and 22" are held closely together as hereinafter described.
Slidable in a slot 25 positioned in the hand grip 8 is a member 26 which consists of a pair of wires welded together along their front portion and bent downwardly to form a trigger 21. The wires comprising the member 26 extend upwardly in a diverging manner to define retainers 28 and 29 for the free ends of the members l2 and 3 as shown in Fig. 1. When the trigger 2! is-depressed, the member 26 slides in the slot 25 moving the retainers 28 and 29 to the position as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l, in which position the free ends of the members l2 and 3, and the fingers 2| and 22 are permitted to spring outwardly to release the member 23, and the projectile 24. After the missile 24 is projected, the fingers 2| and '22 are pressed together whereupon the members 28 and 29 may be moved forwardly into the retaining position as shown in Fig. 1. Another projectile is then positioned in the member 23, and the elastic bands i9 and 2B are stretched rearwardly so that the new projectile positioned in the member 23 may be located back of the fingers 2| and 22. In this position. the device is again ready to be discharged.
A slight bulge is formed, as at 39, on each of the members I2 and I3, which bulges serve to offer slight resistance to the rearward movement of the members 28 and 29 so that a safety factor is provided, whereby the device cannot be discharged without additional pressure being exerted on the trigger 21. v
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a supporting member simulating the barrel of a pistol, a hand grip on said supporting member, a pair of rods supported in substantially parallel relation on said supporting element, said rods being bent and rebent to form posts for supporting elastic bands, elastic bands secured to said posts, the rear ends of said, rods being bentto form fingers arranged to secure therebetween a missile carrying element secured to said rubber bands, and a slidable trigger having fingers arranged to secure therebetween the rear portions of said rods.
2. In a device of the character described in combination, a supporting member simulating the barrel of a gun, a hand grip secured to said supporting member, a pair of rods secured to said supporting member, said rods terminating at one end in a pair of posts adapted to accommodate the ends of elastic bands, the other ends of said rods being bent to form a pair of springable fingers, and a trigger mechanism slidable in said hand grip, said trigger mechanism having means for holding and releasing said fingers for outward movement of said fingers with respect to the longitudinal median line of said supporting member.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a structure simulating a hand gun, a pair of rods secured to said structure, said rods being bent at the front end to form a U- shaped member adapted to support elastic bands, said rods being slightly divergent at the rear and being bent upwardly to form a pair of fingers for holding said elastic bands in stretched condition, and a trigger member slidable'in said structure, said trigger member having a pair of fingers for holding the rear ends of said rods against divergence.
4. The combination defined in claim 3, in which there are protuberances formed near the rear end of said rods, said protuberances being arranged to co-act with the fingers of said trigger member to provide initial resistance to the releasing of said rods from the said trigger member.
MARVIN JARNAGIN.
