UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB F. BENDER, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
BLOWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,124, dated November 29, 1881.
Application filed July 13, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB F. BENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain Improvements in Blowing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in blowing-machines in which the fans radiate from a shaft and revolve in a circular case; and the objects of my improvements are to so arrange a clamp and foot to sustain the fancase that the said case can be revolved vertically, raising or depressing the mouth of the same at will; and, second, to so construct the fan as to lessen the amount of air wasted. I attain th ese objects bythe mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the faucase and foot sustaining the same; Fig. 2, a side view of the arrangement of the fan in the case; and Fig. 3, a section through y of the case, as shown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughoutl the several views.
The clamp C and foot f are divided into two sections, and the fan-case A has two lugs, l, projecting on each side from below. One side ot the clamp C is secured to the bed-plate B by means of bolts b. The caseAis placed thereon with the lugs l. of that side passing under the clamp. The other side of the clamp is then put in place under the case and secured to the hed-plate, the lugs ofthat side of the case passing under it. The jaws j of both sections of the clamp are closed upon and made to firmly embrace the case by means ofthe bolts b. To revolve the case inthe clamp the bolts b are loosened, and tightened again when the case is in the required position.
Six fans, H, are secured to the fan-shaft eby means of ilange-rings r, said rings being connected with the shaft by spokes s. The outer edges of these ange-rings lap and revolve about flanges i of the fan-case A, which project inside and around the opening by which.
the fau-shaft passes through said case. The
fans H are divided into two sections, each composed of a side wing, w, and half of the face n of the. fan. These side wings slope `backward from the face of the fan, and are riveted to the flange r of the ilange-ring r. The wing and fan-face are in one piece; and in order to form the face of the section the metal at the angle between the two is bent back upon itself for a short distance, and this doubled portion bent outward and forward, so as to form short wings w for the face of the fan. The face portion is then bent toward the center, where it has a flange, a', projecting forward, by means of which itis riveted to a similar lian-ge of the part of the fan-face belonging to its corresponding section. The metal of the fan is shaped so as to present a face somewhat concave. By thus lapping the flan ge of thecase by theiiau'gering I materiallylessen the amount of air wasted, and the side wingsaid in compelling the air in front of the fans to pass out of the nozzle of the case, while the flange of the face both strengthens and stiffens the same.
I would further state that the air for supplying the fans is drawn in through the openings by which the shaft passes through the fan-ease, and thence upward between the ange-rings into the fans, which are open below.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. lhe clamp C and foot f, divided into two sections and having the jawsj and bolts b', in combinationv with the fan-case A, having the lugs l, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Thecombinationof the flange-ringer with a fan case, A, having flanges t', and fans H, as herein specified.
3. Fans H, divided into two sections, each with side wings, w, half the fan-face and flange a constructed in one piece,in combination with the ange-ring r, substantially as herein described.
JACOB F. BENDER.
