Patented Mar. 21, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FINGERNAIL SHIELD Lloyd A. Cummings, Glendale, Calif.
Application January 12, 1946, Serial No. 640,692
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a device for protecting finger tips during manicuring operations and has particular reference to a shield which may be applied to the fingers of the hand on which a manicuring operation is to be performed.
To this end the invention resides in the combinations hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which:
Fig. l is a side view of a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing how the device of Fig. l is applied to the hand to be manicured; Fig. 3 illustrates a somewhat modified form of the invention; Fig. 4 shows a further modification of the device; and Fig. 5 shows the device shaped to support the manicuring liquid container ordinarily used in connection with such operation.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 the device consists of a thin, fiat, transparent disk which is perforated at 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 to admit the tips of the fingers, the nails of which are to be manicured. It is important to note that these perforations are arranged about the disk in the manner most convenient for insertion of the finger tips and so that the shield may be held in position on the hand for an extended period of time without discomfort. The perforations are accordingly shown spaced apart and located along an are adjacent the edge of the disk, which are is concave with respect to the central portion of the disk.
The structure of Fig. 3 may be identical with the foregoing, except that a double-faced mirror 1 is placed in the center of the disk. This is believed an important addition to the device for the reason that it tends to divert the attention of the person treated from the manicuring operation. This mirror may be mounted in a perforation of the disk, or a separate mirror may be placed on each side thereof.
The structure of Fig. 4 is also substantially like the shield of Fig. 1, except that it is made saucershaped, and curving the shield in this manner it may by some persons be found more comfortable.
The devices hereinbefore described are not only convenient for use by the manicurist, but may also be used by any woman manicuring her own finger nails. It may, however, be difficult for the person who prefers to manicure her own hands to handle the tools and supplies necessary for the manicuring operation. Of such tools and supplies the ones mostly used are the bottles containing the nail polishes and other solutions and the brushes by means of which these solutions are applied to the finger nails, and I have found any means which may be embodied in the device of the invention, which will assist in supporting and guide such bottles during the treatment, is of importance.
To this end, the structure of Fig. 5 is shown made with a central perforation I0 within which the finger nail polish container may be held when the shield is applied to the hand. When so seated it is to be noted that the bottom of the container will rest in the palm of the hand on which the shield is mounted. It is to be remembered that the shape of perforation [ii is merely suggestive, and that in each case it should be made to conform to the shape of the container to be used.
It is apparent from the foregoing description that I have provided a very simple and inexpensive device of great convenience and assistance in manicuring operations.
I claim:
1. A finger nail shield consisting of a thin, flat disk of rigid material provided with perforations of a size and shape to receive therein the ends of the fingers of the hand, said perforations being spaced apart and located along an are adjacent the edge of the disk, said arc being concave with respect to the central portion of the disk.
2. A finger nail shield consisting of a thin disk made from rigid material and having four perforations therethrough, said perforations being spaced apart and located along an are adjacent the edge of the disk, said are being concave with respect to the central portion of the disk, the disk having a fifth perforation within the edge of the disk substantially opposite said perforations of a size to receive therein the outer point of the thumb of the hand.
LLOYD A. CUMMINGS.
