SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,093, dated November 29, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC H. G. MEY, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on a Double-Seamer for Elevator-Buckets; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings,forms a full, clear, and exact specification which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to the manufacture of metallic elevator-buckets; and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar method of and means for double-seaming the heads to the body, substantially as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings alreadymentioned, which serve toillustrate my said invention more fully, Figure l is a front elevation of my improved double-seamin g stake. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan thereof. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an elevator-head previous to its being double-seamed. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the body. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation in line as a: of Fig. 3, illustrating my method of folding over of the edges of the body and head. Fig. 7 is a sectional elevation of the stake and an elevator-body in position, showing the body seamed to the head.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
A in these drawings represents a pedestal or standard of suitable construction, having centrally a socket, B, for the reception of the shank O ofa stake, D. (Shown in detail in Fig. 2.) This stake consists of a top plate or anvil having externally the shape of the head of an elevator-bucket in dapZ0-that is to say, one half of the plate corresponds to one head and the other half to the opposite head of said buckets, said heads being right and left. Gentrally to this top plate, D, is pivoted, by atixed pin, E, a tightening-band, F, embracing one half of the edge of said plate D, said band being secured to said plate on the end opposite that pivoted at E by means of a wedge, G, engaging a notched pin, G, in such manner that,
no matter whether said band embraces one or the other half of said plate D, it can always be tightened by means of said wedge or key G. The method which Ihave' adopted for doubleseaming elevator-buckets by means of the device hereinbefore described is as follows: Ahead, K, or end piece for an elevator-bucket such as shown in Fig. 4 is first placed upon that side of the plate D corresponding with the contour of said head. Now a body, L, is passed, with its crimped or folded edge a, over the edge 0 of said head, so that the parts assume the position shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Now the band F is passed around the body E and slightly tightened, after which the upper edge of said body L along the folded part a is struck lightly with a hammer or mallet, so as to bring the crimped part a in intimate contact with the crimped part 00f the head K. Having thus far proceeded, the operator takes hold of a settingtool, E, Fig. 6, shaped somewhat like achisel, and, holding or pressing this tool against the inner side of the crimped part c. strikes the latter along the outer edge of said crimp with a mallet, so as to bend the crimps a and 0 over until the parts finally assume the shape illustrated in Fig. 7, and the operation is thereby.
completed.
It is evident that for each of the different sizes of elevator-buckets it requires a different anvil or plate, D.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States-.
The improved double-seaming stake hereinbefore described, consisting, essentially, of the anvil-plate D, having externally the contour of an elevator-head, K, and the pivoted tightening-band F, adapted to embrace the periphcry of said plate D, and provided with means, substantially as described, for tightening said band, substantially in the manner as and for the object specified.
