Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oFFIcE.
EDT/VIN GOMEZ, OF NEW YORVKLN. Y.
FOLDING OR WRAPPING PAPER, &c.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,007, dated August 9, 18591.
To all whom t may concern.' v
Be it known that I, EDWIN GOMEZ, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Folding or Trapping Paper or other Material Around Any Substance; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1, is a plan of my said folding device; Fig. Q, is a side View in larger size of the first folder; Fig. 3, is a similar view of the last folder; Fig. 4 is the rst intermediate twister', and Fig. 5, is a side View of the last twister.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
This invention was originally devised for folding up paper, into which is wrapped powder such as patented to Gomez and Mills September 15, 1857, to form fusee or trains for firing blasts, cannons, signals &c., but this mechanism is equally available for wrapping paper, gutt-a-pcrcha, thin strips of metal or other material around a fusee, cord or other article.
In the drawing a, is a rod or support sustained by the standards Z), I), on a suitable bench or otherwise. This rod a, carries the sliding collars o, e, e, and g, g, adjusted to position and retained by the binding screws 1, and 2, 2, 2. The collar 0carries a roller or guide over which the material a', shown in blue lines, passes from a roll or continuous strip and enters the first folder f, that is secured into the collar e, by a screw 6. The lip 4, on the end of a strip of metal that is below the materia-l and is attached' by the screw 5, passing through a slot so as t0 allow for Variation in width, guides the edge of the material as it is drawn through and causes the other edge to be rolled up and turned over by the volute or scroll 3, making the first fold and inclosing the cord powder or other article supplied at this point.k From the folder f the paper.` passes into the first twister z', Whichois formed as shown in, Fig. 4, and is composed of a piece of sheet metal bent into a U1 shapeand. having Va compound twist sothat the'folded edge of the paper entering horizontally comes out vertically or nearly so and proceeds to the second folder, and thence tothe second 'twister and so on until the desired.
number of twists Aor folds are` obtained.
The material as it is wrapped vup-becomiing thicker at the folds requii s that more space be left successively in both the turners and-l twisters;oand the guide 4, in all cases is to" be adapted to the differentv and decreasing widths of the paper.
The twisters z', z', maybe provided withv plates 7 7, on which the flat' portion of the y paper or other material rests. v
The paper or other material is to be drawn through this folding kmachine by a pair of rollers (la, 75,) moved by a crank Z, or otherwise; and in cases where it is necessary to. compress the paper between each foldas turned, the sa-me may be accomplished by rollers between the respective folders and turners, said rollers being geared together to attain uniformity of movement.
The parts which turn and twist the paper or other material may be formed of metal or other substance according to the use for which the machine is intended.
I do not claim broadly folding or wrapping paper or other material around any substance to be inclosed, but
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The folders (f, f,) formed with the lips (4, 4,) and volutes (3, 3,) in combination with the intermediate twisters (i, z',) in the manner and for the purposes specified.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this twelfth day of May 1859.
EDWIN GOMEZ.
