CORN-SHELLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,990, dated November 22, 1881. Application filed January :28, 1881. Renewed October 24, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES PUnsLEY, of Atlanta, in the'county of Fulton, and in the State of Georgia, have imented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-shellers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making apart of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in corn-shellers; andithasforits objects to provide an apparatus that may be conveniently attached to the edge of a box or table or other support and operated by means of one hand, while the ears of corn may be fed in by the other hand; and it further has for its objects to provide certain improved means whereby the ears may beautomatically drawn through the apparatus, held to the action of the shellers or strippers, and finally discharged separate from the cob. These objects I attain by the apparatus and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved invention. Fig. 2 represents a front View of the same. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of section B of my improved apparatus; and Fig. 4 represents a similar view of the other section, A, with the annulus M secured thereto, and Fig. 5 a detached view of one of the strippers or shellers. Fig. 6 represents a vertical sectional view through the axis of the driving-shaft and the oppositeexit for the shelled corn..
My improved apparatus is constructed in two parts or sections, indicated respectively by means of the letters A B. The upper or forward section, A, consists of a hollow castmetal shell having an opening, 0, in front, and a series of miter cog-teeth, D, at its lower edge. The said shell is provided with a series of four radial slotted sleeves, E, in which are located a series of sliding shafts, F, which are provided with pins G, adapted to work in the slots, permitting the shafts to play longitudinally, but holding them against rotation. The shafts are recessed longitudinally, as indicated by the letter H, and in said recesses are adapted to project the set-screws I, passing through the sleeves, by means of which the shafts may be clamped in the sleeves for the purpose more fullyhereinafter explained. The shaftsF carry at their inner ends the shellers or strippers K, which consist of screw-blades terminating in flat fingers at the rear;
The letter L indicates a series of springs located in the sleeves behind the shafts F, the object of which is to permit the shafts to yield to accommodate the shellers or strippers t0 ears of different sizes.
The letter M indicates an annulus, having a beveled periphery. The said annulus is secured to the shell A by means of screws a or otherwise, for the purpose hereinafter specified.
The lower section, B, of the apparatus consists of a hollow cast-metal shell, having a central opening corresponding with the opening in the shell A. The said shell Bis provided at its opening with an inwardly-extending sleeve, N, which is cut away at its inner end, as indicated by the letter P, for the passage of the pulleys or rollers R, which are mounted in bearings S secured to the inner ends of the shafts T, which workin slotted sleeves U, their motion being limited by means of the screws V setting through the slots. The outer edge of said section B is provided with perforated lugs W, and to saidlugs is secured, by means of screws w, an annulus, Y, the inner portion of which is beveled and sets underthe beveled periphery of the annulus secured to the section A, so as to permit the sections A and B to rotate freely with respect to each other. The section B is provided with a discharge-opening, B, for the escape of the shelled corn, and at its rear is provided with extensions C. One of th ese extensions serves as a support for the journal of a miter-wheel, D, which intermeshes with the miter gear-teeth on the edge 90 ot' the forward section, A, of the apparatus. The remaining extensions are adapted to embrace the edge of a table or support, and one of the last mentioned is provided with a binding-screw, E, by which the apparatus may be secured to the edge of a table or support.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the above without further explanation.
