Application September 14, 1948, Serial No. 49,185 8 Claims. (01. 222-86) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pouring devices and more particularly to a'ipouring attachment for containers.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a casing embracing a container and includingnovel and improved means for puncturing an'air vent and outlet opening in the container.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a pouring attachment for containers whereby: the container is simultaneously locked in 'position to the attachment as the outlet opening is punched in the container. A further object of the present invention is to -provide an attachment with the foregoing purposes and including a spout and handle whereby the contents of the container may be con- Veniently pouredthereirom. g
A still further aim of the present invention is to providei itpouring attachment for containers that is simple and practical in construction, efficient and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance and otherwise well adapted for the purposes forwhich the same is intended.
Other objectsand advantages reside in the details of construction and. operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like part throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the present invention applied to a containerlshown in dotted lines)" in an, unlocked position, and with parts of the attachment broken away and shown in section;
Figure 2 is a similar view of Figure 1 and showing the present invention in a locked position to the container;
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of sectional line 33 of Figure 1; H
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of sectional line 44 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is aperspective view of the gasket used in conjunction with the present invention;
and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevational view taken substantially in the direction of the arrow numbered 6 in Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there isdi-sclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral Ill represents a substan- 2 tially cylindrical casing having upper and lower open ends l2 and I4.
Yieldingly embracing the upper open end l2 of the casing III, is the depending flanged portion l6 of a closure or lid l8. Circumferentially spaced, arcuate ribs 28 are pressed outwardly from the upper end l2 of the container ill and are received in depressions or recesses 22 provided in the flanged portion 16, in order to retain the closure l8 relative to the casing Ill.
Integrally formed with the closure I3, is a spout or pouring lip 24 that is normally closed by a pivotal closure plate 26 mounted on the closure I 8.
A tubular support or conduit 28 carried by the flanged portion l6, communicates with the spout 24 and the interior of the casing Ill, and is embraced by a resilient, compressible spool or gasket 30. A coil spring 32 embraces the spool 30 and the reduced end convolutions thereof bear against the end flanges of the spool 30 to normally urge the spool 30 to an extended position, as shown best in Figure 1 of the drawings.
A cutter blade 34 having a beveled edge 36 is fixed to the inner end of the conduit 28 and is braced thereto by an angle member 38 having an inclined leg portion 40.
A pair of spaced ears 42 are integrally formed with the closure IB and are disposed diametrically from the spout 2 and immediately adjacent each side of a group of slots 44 provided in the closure [8, the flanged portion it thereof and the upper end I 2 of the casing H].
A hand-grip 46 is pivoted adjacent its upper free end portion 48 between the ears 42 by the use of a pin 50, so that the end portion 48 will be movable into the casin l0 through the slots 44 as the lower free end portion 52 of the handle 46 is moved downwardly and inwardly toward the casing I0.
A base plate 54 is suitably fixed to the outer periphery of the casing ID, at the lower end I 4 thereof, and supports a pair of spaced, arcuate and resilient fingers 56 that yieldingly receive the end portion 52 of the handle 46 to hold the same in a locked position relative to the casing l0.
One end 53 of an elongated, longitudinally disposed spring member 60 is fixed by rivets 62 or the like to the inner periphery of the casing In, at the lower end thereof, and the upper free end of the spring member 60 is bent inwardly and downwardly to provide an angulated punching arm 64 having a beveled edge 66.
It should be noted, that the spring member 60 is in alignment with the hand-grip 46 and the slots 44, so that as the end portion 48 is moved inwardly through the slots 44, the same will engage and force the upper portion of the spring member 60 inwardly as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
Also fixed to the inner periphery of the casing It], at the lower end I l thereof, by rivets 68 or the like, is one end it of another elongated, longitudinally disposed spring member or resilient pressure arm 12, the upper free end Hi of which terminates adjacent the upper end l2 of the casing- ID and is turned outwardly to provide a lip 16. The arm i2 is disposed on a diametrically opposite side of the casing from the spring member 60 in order to cooperate therewith in yieldingly retaining a container 18 within the casing 10.
In practical use of the present invention, the hand-grip or handle 66 is first raised to that position illustrated in Figure 1 and the container I8 is inserted upwardly into the casing I and the spring members 60 and 12 yieldingly bear against the container 18.
As the hand-grip 4-6 is forced downwardly and inwardly toward the casing H], the portion 48 of the hand-grip 46 will bear against the spring member 80, adjacent the upper free end thereof, to force the upper free portion of the spring member 60 toward the spring member 12 and thus yieldingly retain the container 73 within the casing I0. Simultaneously with the movement of the spring member 60 toward the spring member T2, the upper portion of the container 18 is forced against the beveled edge 36 of the blade 34 forming an opening in the container 78 and the area immediately adjacent the opening formed in the container by the blade 34 is sealed by the gasket 30 since the same is compressed, as shown best in Figure 2 of the drawings.
It should be noted, that the inclined portion 49 of the angle member 38 is so disposed and positioned that it will tend to widen or enlarge the opening formed by the beveled edge 36 of the cutter blade 34.
The device now being in that position illustrated in Figure 2, it is merely necessary to grip the handle 46 in order to pour a liquid from the container 18 through the conduit 28, the spout 24 and hence into a suitable receptacle.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordin ly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the ap ended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A pouring attachment for containers comprising a casing adapted to be placed over a container, a closure at the upper end of said casing, means for locking a container within said casing, a pouring spout carried by said closure, means carried by said casing for puncturing the top of a container, and means carried by said closure for puncturing an outlet opening in the container adjacent said spout, said locking means including a handle pivotally mounted on said closure and having a bearing portion, a container engaging member carried by said casing for engaging the outer periphery of a container received in said casing, and means for holding the handle in a fixed position with the bearing portion thereof against said member.
2. A pouring attachment for containers comprising a casing adapted to be placed over a container, a closure at the upper end of said casing, means for looking a container in said casing, a pouring spout carried by said closure, means carried by said casing for puncturing a top of a container, and means carried by said closure for puncturing an outlet opening in the container adjacent said spout, said first-mentioned puncturing means including an elongated spring member fixed at one end to said casing and a pointed element at the free end of said spring member.
3. A pouring attachment for containers comprising a casing adapted to be placed over a container, a closure at the upper end of said casing, a spout carried by the closure, a handle pivotally mounted on said closure and having a bearing portion, a. container engaging member carried by said casing and engaged with the bearing portion of said handle for lockably retaining a container within said casing, a blade carried by said closure extending inwardly of said spout for engaging the container as said handle is lowered, means for locking said handle in a lowered position, and means carried by said member for puncturing an air opening in the container.
4. A pouring attachment for containers comprising an open ended cylinder adapted to be placed over acontainer, a removable closure for the upper end of said cylinder, a spout carried by the closure, an elongated spring member fixed at one end to said casing, a handle pivoted 'on said closure and including a bearing portion engageable with the free end of said spring member, said cylinder and said closure having communicating slots adapted to receive the bearing portion of said closure, a cutter blade carried by said closure for forming an opening in a container adjacent said spout, means for sealingthe area adjacent an openingformed in a container by said blade, means cooperating with said spring means for retaining a container in said-casing, and means for puncturing an air port in the top of a container.
5. The combination of claim 4, wherein said last-mentioned means includes a further blade carried by the free end of said spring member.
6. The combination of claim 4, wherein said means for sealing the area adjacent an opening formed in a container by said blade includes a compressible sealing sleeve and means normally retaining said sleeve extended.
'7. The combination of claim 6, wherein said means normally retaining said sleeve extended includes a resilient member.
8. A pouring attachment for containers comprising a casing adapted to loosely embrace a container, a pair of elongated spring members each fixed at one of its ends to the inner surface of said casing for yieldingly receiving and supporting a container placed in said casing, a closure for said casing, a pivotal handle carried by said closure and including a bearing portion, said closure and said casing havin communicating openings adapted to receive the bearing portion of said handle, said bearing portion of said handle engageable with the free end of one of said spring members for forcing the same to.-. ward the remaining of said members, means;
