4 Claims. (01. 292-263) connected to the storm window and is detachably connected to a stile plate on the Window frame so that the storm window and bracket may be removed as an entirety. Many such detachable connections include pivoted arms,-slidable catches, and other such features to hold the fastener connected to the stile plate. In View of the fact that these connections usually include a movable element, such fasteners often become difficult to operate after lengthy exposure to the elements.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a window fastener which is provided with a detachable connection including no pivotally supported or slidably mounted parts. My detachable connection includes a headed pin which is engageable in the slotted end of one of the pivotally connected links. .A spring stip is permanently connected to this link at a point spaced from the slotted end thereof. This spring strip is provided with an aperture engageable with the head of the headed pin. Thus the link may be attached or detached when the spring strip is flexed slightly away from the surface of the link. However, when the headed pin is engaged at the base of its slot the spring strip will engage the head of the pin and prevent accidental disengagement.
' A feature of the present invention resides in the fact that the spring strip may be of considerable length and accordingly may be of substantial size and strength. Due to the fact that the spring strip must flex but slightly relative to the arm or link to which it is attached, there is little likelihood that the spring strip will break in operation.
A feature of the present invention resides in the provision of a means for manually flexing the spring strip. The spring strip is provided with an integral depressed portion which is engageable through a slot in the armor link to which the strip is attached. This depressed portion projects through the arm a distancesuflicientto permit the strip to befiexed byapplying pressure to the depressed portion.
A feature of the present invention resides in the simplicity of construction and assembly of my fastener. The detachable connection includes a minimum of parts. The connection includes a stile plate having a headed pin projecting therefrom, a link or arm having a slotted end, and a spring strip on the arm or link extending over the slotted end. The spring strip is riveted or otherwise affixed to the arm or link at a point remote from the slotted end. An aperture is provided in the arm or link through which the depressed portion of the spring strip may extend. This interengagement of the depressed portion and aperture serve the double purpose of providing a projecting portion by means of which the spring strip may be flexed and also of holding the spring strip properly aligned with the" link or arm on which it is attached.
' These and other objects and novel features of, my invention will be more clearly and fully set forth in the following specification and claims.

. The window fastener A is designed to connect a pivotally hung window such as B to its frame C. In the form illustrated the window B may comprise a storm Window pivotally connected along its upper edge along a horizontal axis to the frame C. The window B is usually generally rectangular in outline and fits within the outer confines IU of the frame C, folding against the parting stop I I of the frame to form a seal thereagainst.
The window fastener A includes a pair of arms" l2 and I3 which are pivotally connected together at a knee joint by a pivot bolt M or the like; The arm I2 is shown as being L-shaped in cross section including an arm body portion [5 and a marginal flange I6 extending along one edge thereof to reinforce the body. The flange I6 is.- notched at ll near the knee joint end of the arm [2 to accommodate a projecting ear [9 of a washer 20. The ear |9 holds the washer 20 from rotation relative to the arm l2. The pivot bolt |4 preferably extends through the Washer 20, through a fiber washer 2|, through the end of the arm I3, through a second fiber washer 22, and through the body portion l of the arm l2. A nut 23 is provided on the pivot bolt l4 by means of which the pressure between the washer and the body portion l5 of the arm |2 may be regulated. The arm |3 is provided with a longer reinforcing means such as a longitudinally extending reinforced rib 24 therein. One end of the arm H3 is pivotally supported by the pivot bolt I4. The other end of the arm I3 is preferably riveted at 25 to the projecting flange 26 of the window attaching bracket 21. The bracket 21 includes a fiat base 29 secured flush against the inner surface of the window B by wood screws 30 or other suitable means and the flange 26 extends at right angles; to this base for attachment with the arm, I43.
The bracket arm I2 is. designed for attachment with the stile plate 3|. The stile plate- 3| includes a pair of end portions 32 and 33 in 00- planer relationship having apertures therethroughtov accommodate attaching screws. 34. Between coplaner ends 32 and 33 is supported a central portion 35 connected to the ends 32 and. 33,, respectively, by inclined portions 36. and 3,1. The central off-set portion 35 supports a pivot pin construction as best illustrated in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings.
The pivot pin 39 includes. a reduced diameter portion 40 which extends through the intermediate portion, 35 of the stile plate 3|. The inner projecting end of the pivot pin 39 is riveted or peaned over so as to secure, the pivot pin in proper position with, its axis projecting at. sub,- stantially right angles to the surface of the off-set portion 35. The pivot'pin 39 is formed with a body portion 4| somewhat longer than the thickness of the body portion l5 of the arm I2. A head 42 is also provided on the body portion 4|. they head 42 being slightly greater in diameter than the body portion 4 I .The arm I2 is provided. with a longitudinally slotted end, the slot. being. indicated by the numeral 43.. The slot 43 is of just sufficient width to. accommodate the body portion 4| of the pivot 39. The head 42 of this pivot39 is somewhat, larger in diameter than the width of the slot 43 so that the. head 42 engages. over the, sides of, the slot. As a result the head 42 holds, the arm |2, engaged on the pivot, pin 39 when the. fastener is in, place.
The spring strip 44 is riveted or otherwise affixed at 45 to the arm l2. The spring strip extends. a substantial portion of the length of the. arm [2 in order that the proper spring action. may be provided without, weakening the strip 44. The end of the strip 44 overlying, the pivot. 39 is provided with an aperture 46. therein of proper dimensions to fit about the head 42, of the pivot 39.. As a result the. spring strip, 44. may normally lie flat against the. body l5 of the arm l2 as illustrated in Figures 1, 2, and, 3. of the drawings, the head 42 of the pivot engaging within the aperture 46. When thus enaged the spring strip holds th fastener engaged as, the pivot 39 can not move longitudinally in the slot 43.
A spring actuated member is produced by forcing an elongated strap 41 of material from the spring arm 44 and urging this strip out of the'plane of the spring strip. 44. to form an.
elongated depressed portion. The body l5 of the arm I2 is provided with an elongated aperture 49 through which the projecting strip 41 may extend. The aperture 49 is but slightl wider than the strip 41 so that the engagement of the strip 41 through this aperture 49 acts both to provide a spring actuated means and also to hold the spring strip 44 in proper relation on the arm l2. Obviously the. spring strip 44 can not pivot. about the pivot. 45 as it is held in alignment with the arm |2 by engagement of the strip 41 through the aperture 49.
In, attaching the arm I 2 to the stile plate 3|, the head 42 of the pivot 39 may be placed at the entrance of; the slot. 43 in the position shown in broken linesv in Figure 6 of the drawings. The head 42 will, engage the tip end of the spring arm 44 so that inward pressure of the arm I 2 toward the stile plate 3| will flex the spring arm outwardly until the head 42 is interposed between the body I5 of the arm l2 and the spring strip 44. As soon as the head 42 is between the arm and the spring strip, the arm i2 may be moved, longitudinally, the. body 4| of the pivot 39 engaging in the slot 43. until. the head 42 of the pivot coincides with the aperture 46 in the spring arm 44. The spring arm 44 then springs toward the body l5 of the arm |2 engaging about the head 42 and holding the arm from longitudinal movement in either direction. When, in this engaged position the arm l2 may be pivoted about the pivot 39 in any direction in the operation of the fastener A.
In detaching the arm [2 from the stile plate 3|, it is only necessary to apply pressure against the projecting strip 41 so as to flex the spring strip 44 outwardly into the position shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. This pressure is applied in the direction of the arrow 59 in Figure 4 of the drawings and tends to disen age the head 42 from the aperture 46. In this position the arm |2 may be moved longitudinally to disengage the body 4| of the pivot from the slot 43'. If desired, the projecting strip 41 may be knurled or roughened to prevent the fingers from slipping while flexing the strip 44.
Figure 5 of the drawings best illustrates the position of the arm l2 when the pivot 39-is being engaged or disengaged therefrom. In this figure the head 42' is shown between the free end of the spring 44 and the slotted end of the arm l2. From the position shown in Figure 5, the arm |12 may be moved' to the left to engage the head 42, in the aperture 46' or maybe moved to the right to disengage the pivot 39 from the If desired the arms may be arranged with the detachable connection positioned between the outer arm or link |3 and the bracket 21. In, such an event, the bracket 21 supports. the headed pin 39, and the arm I3 is provided with the end slot and spring strip to engage the same.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of construction and operation of my window fasteners, and While I have. endeavored to set forth the best embodiment. thereof, I desire to have it understood that obvious changes may be made within th scope of the, following claims Without departing, from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
l. A window fastener for connecting a. pivot.- ally supported window member to a framememb,e1.,, Said. fastener including a pair of pivotally connected links, means. pivotally connecting one of said links to one of said members, and means detachably and pivotally connecting the other of said links to the other of said members, said detachable connection including a headed pivot secured to said other member to project therefrom, a slot in said other link designed to engage about said pivot beneath said head, a spring strip secured to said other link at a point remote from the slot therein, said strip overlying said slot, means on said spring strip engageable with said pivot to hold said pivot engaged in said slot, and means on said spring strip extending through said other link means holding said spring strip from pivoting relative to said other link and providing a means for flexing said strip.
2. A connector for connecting a pivotally supported window member to its frame member, the connector including a pair of links pivotally connected together, means pivotally connecting one of said links to one of said members, means detachably and pivotally connecting the other of said links to the other of said members, said detachable connecting means including a headed pivot secured to said other member to project therefrom, a slot in said other link engageable with said pivot adjacent said head, a spring strip secured to said link at a point spaced from said slot and designed to overlie said slot, an aperture in said strip designed to engage said pivot head to hold said pivot engaged in said slot, and means on said strip extending through said other link for use in flexing said strip.
3. A window fastener for connecting a pivotally supported window member to a frame member, the fastener including a pair of pivotally connected links, means connecting one of said links to one of said frame members, detachable means connecting the other of said links to said other frame member, said detachable connection including a headed pivot projecting from said other frame member, a slot in said other link engageable with said pivot beneath the head thereof, a
spring strip overlying said other link, means connecting said spring strip to said other link at a point remote from the slot therein, said spring strip overlying said slot means on said spring strip engageable with the head of said pivot to hold said pivot engaged in said slot, an aperture in said other link, and a projection on said spring strip extending through said aperture.

A window fastener for connecting a window member to its frame member, said fastener including a pair of pivotally connected links, means pivotally connecting one of said links to one of said members, means pivotally and detachably connecting the other of said links to the other of said members, said detachable connection including a headed pivot projecting from said other member, a slot in said other link adjacent the free end thereof, said slot engageable with said pivot beneath the head thereof, a spring strip secured to said other link at a point remote from the slot, said strip extending over Said slot, an aperture in said strip for receiving the head of said pivot and holding said pivot from longitudinal movement in said slot, an elongated aperture in said arm between said slot and the point of fastening between said strip and said other link, and an elongated projection on said spring strip extending through said elongated aperture.
