Description

G. w, BEARD.
Cultivator.
Patented Aug. 9, 1859.
PETERS, FHOTD-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D O UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. BEARD, OF CANTON, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT lN' COTTON-CULTIVATORS.
To all whom itonag concern. Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BEARD, of
Canton, in the county of Madison and Stateof Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cotton-Scrapers; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, of which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the scraper, showing the several parts in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a front view of the plows and adjustable scraper-plates. Fig. 3 is a side View of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in combining with two right and left turn-plows having their standards fixed in a laterally-adjustable frame, peculiar-shaped scrapers or cutters, which are made both laterally and longitudinally adjustable on the mold-boards of the plows, for acting on both sides of the ridge at a single operation, as hereinafter described.
A represents a central beam with two plowhandles, B, for guiding the machine along the row of cotton. On each side of this beam A are two plow-beams, G (J, which have a lateral adjustnn-nt, and are sustained by slotted bars D D, through which pass tightening-bolts a for securing the plow-beams in any desired position. These two plow beams are further strengthened and sustained by hinged braces E E, so that. the strain is in a great measure taken off the slotted bars l).
The plows F are each attached to the beams O U, and strengthened against any longitudinal pressure by .standards G G, proceeding down from the rear ends of the plow-beams O O, and to which are attached the landside plates 1).
0n the face ofeach m old-board are arranged and securely attached scrapers J J, of the form shown clearly by Figs. 1 and 2. These scrapers, when attached to the plows, have each an inclined and vertical edge, which are adjusted so as to correspond to the inclined sides of the ridge of cotton-plants in the following manner:
The bottoms ofthe scraper-plates J J are pivoted at c c to the mold-boards of the plows F, and near the top of these plates are segmental slots at d, through which pass bolts 6 e for rigidly securingthe plates to the plows after they have been set to the desired position. These plates have their centers of motion at c c, and besides thelateral adjustment they can be adjusted vertically in slots, (indicated by dotted lines,) so that the edges of the scrapers or cutters J Jcan be adjusted to conform to the width and size of the row of cotton, at the same time accomplishing the work of scraping more effectually than has heretofore been done by any other machine.
to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The peculiar shape given to the scrapers or cutters J J, and their lateral and vertical adjustment, in combination with the adjustable plowbeams O 0, when the same are all arranged in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
What I claim. as my invention, anddesire GEORGE W. BEARD.
