To all whom 'it muy concern:

Beit known that I, HENRY P. SMITH, ot' Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Cabinets for Poisons, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide ro simple, convenient, and effective means of guarding against accidents and mistakes in dealing out poisonous drugs; and it consists, chiefly, of a case or inclosure havinga door or gate, a shelf or shelves arranged within said case, movable to and from, the door thereof, a

locking device connected with the'door and engaging a guard on the shelves, andan unlocking device arranged to release the door when one of the shelves is brought into an accessizo ble position before this door; and it also consists in the combination, with the aforesaid case and inclosed shelves, of certain means of exposing the label of the drugs as they are carried before the door by the moving shelves, and certain devices for preventing the movement of the shelves while the door is opened, all as hereinafter more fully described.

The invention is fully illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an isol3o metric view of my improved safety poisoncabinet with the door opened for obtaining one ofthe drugs from the case. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical transverse section on line a: in Fig. 2.

A represents a case or inclosure, constructed of any desirable material and in any style and 4o dimensions adapted to contain the requisite number of shelves or racks for the various drugs to be inclosed in said case. v

E E are cylinders or drums pivoted vertically in the case A, and provided on the upper protruding end of their shaft or axle with a crank, O, or other suitable handle for turning` said cylinders. Around the cylinders E E passes an endless belt, F, and to this belt are secured in a suitable manner the shelves or 5o racks B B, for containing the drugs, the belt,

with its shelves, being supported intermediately between the cylinders E E by guides m n, properly arranged within the case, and the tension of the belt is rendered adjustable by pivoting the cylinders Ev E in plates r1, which 55 are adjustably secured in their position by a Screw or bolt, n, passing through a slot, c, either in the plate r or in the part to which they` are connected, as shown in Fig. 2.of the drawings. The front or outer side of the re- 6o spective shelves is open, with the exception of two plates, g and i, extended across it, respect ively, near the bottom and top, the bottom plate, g, serving as a guard both for retaining the bottle in the shelf B and for holding the door closed, as will be hereinafter explained. The top plate, i, is designed chieily for holding a label orinscription indicating the drug contained in the shelf or rack and giving such other cautionary notice with reference to same 7o as may be deemed advisable.

l designates a latch on the door D, said latch being provided with an arm, d, which is ex- 8o tended over and engages the inner face of the guard g on the shelfB, thus causing the shelves to hold the door in a closed position. The guard g has a notch or opening, h, of such dimensions and in such relative position that when the shelf B is in its requisite position for access at the door the arm d is allowed to pass through said opening h and release the door from its locked position. Then the door is opened the guard g is exposed to view, and by 9o Vapplying to said guard a label or inscription similar to that on the upper plate, i, the per'- son in quest of the drug receives another warning in addition to those afforded by the labels on the bottle and upper plate, fi.

s represents a spring attached to the case A, and having a spur, t, adapted to enter an aperture, c, in the shelf B. The free end of the spring s is provided with a beveled head,

c, and the door D has a stud, f, which in clos loo l ing the door strikes the head e, and thereby depresses the spring s suciently to throw the spur tout of the aperture c inthe shelf. Upon opening the door the studf releases the spring s, and causes the spur t to enter the aperture c, and thus prevent the shelves from moving while the door is'opened.

The operation of my invention is as follows: The shelves B B being supplied with the drugs according to the labels on the upper and lower front plates ofthe respective shelves, the door is closed and retained so by moving the shelves suciently to bring the arm d behind the guard g. Vhen one oi' the inclosed drugs is desired the shelves B B are moved by turning the cranks C until the label of the required drug appears at the port a. At that instant vthe opening t in the guard g is brought in coineidence with the arm d of the door, thus allowing the latter to be opened. Upon opening the door two more labels apprise the operator of the contents of the shelf. Simultaneously with the opening of the door the spring s is allowed to throw the spur t into the aperture c ofthe shelf, thereby holding the shelves stationary while the door is opened. Upon closing the door again the spur t is thrown out of its engagement with the shelf, and the apparatus is ready i'or bringing to the door another drug. Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The safety-cabinet consisting of a case with shelves arranged within the case adapted to move to and from the door thereof, a locking device connected with the door and engaging a guard on the-shelves, and an unlocking device arranged to release the door when one ot' the shelves is brought into an accessible position before the door, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of a series of shelves or racks carried around vertical revolving shafts provided respectively with labels or inscriptions, and a case inclosing said shelves or racks provided with observation-ports in range with the said labels or inscriptions, and a door giving access to only one of the shelves or racks at a time.

3. The cylinders E E, endless belt F, and shelves B B, the latter provided with the guard g, having the opening h, in combination with the case A, having the door D, provided with thearm d,substautiallyasdescribed andshown, for the purpose set forth.

4t. In combination with the case A, the movable shelves B, provided with the aperture c, the spring s, provided with the spur t and beveled head c, and the door D, provided with the studf, substantially as and for the purpose set forth'.

5. The vertical pivoted cylinders E E, provided with a handle C, endless belt F, and shelves B B, the latter provided respectively with the plate t', guard g, and aperture c, in combination with the case A, having port a, door D, provided with the latch l, arm d, and studf, and the spring s, attached to the case and provided with the spur t and beveled head e, all substantially as described and shown.
