W. M. JOHNSTON.
GANTEEN.
No.249,769. Patented Nov. 22,1881. EH51. 'Eb.%.
'LmOewM-m IIMTEE STATES PATENT OEEICE.
W'ILLIAM M. JOHNSTON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CANTEEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,769, dated November 22', 1881.
Application filed October 13, 1881.
The object of my improvement is to supply a canteen with an arrangement by which its contents can be readily and quickly heated,
while at the same time the canteen can be carried and used in the same manner as the ordinary canteens.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the canteen in position. Fig. 3 is a vertical crosssection.
My improvement is made as follows:
A represents the canteen adapted to contain tea, cofl'ee, or other liquid.
B is a jacket, whose sides are preferably formed of wire-gauze, or are provided with perforations, which jacket is so arranged that the canteen A will slide up and down in it readily. This jacket B is provided with a stop or catch, F, which consists of a small metal wire or rod passing through one side, or secured to one side, of the jacket B, and so arranged as to turn freely. The upper part of this stop F is formed into or provided with a small bar running at right angles to the straight part of the catch or stop F, and the jacket B has an opening, a, so arranged that when the stop F is turned the upper part or bar will pass through the opening a, and thus form a rest or stop for the canteen A while it is being heated.
0 represents a lamp or means of supplying heat.
I prefer to use a lamp formed by placing cotton, tow, or other similar substance in a proper receptacle and saturating the same with alcohol, and then covering the aperture with wiregauze or similar device; but I do not intend to confine myself to this particular lamp or I means of supplying heat.
(No model.)
The canteen A is provided with a neck, H, through which the liquid is poured, and, if desired, may be provided with an opening or tube, K, for holding alcohol, placed on the top of the canteen and at one side for supplying the lamp.
1) represents a metal rim, which, if desired, is formed around the bottom of the jacket B, for preventing the canteen A from slipping through the jacket when the lamp is withdrawn.
E E are caps covering the opening or openings in the top of the canteen A.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: When it is desired to heat the contents of the canteen A the canteen is lifted above the stop or catch F, and stop or catch F turned so that its upper part or bar passes through the opening a in the jacket B, and is at right angles to the body of the canteen, and the canteen is then rested on and held in position by said stop F. The lamp is then lighted and fitted to the jacket B. When the contents are heated the lamp is extinguished, and, after using, the stop is turned so that the bar is parallel to the body ofl'hc canteen, and the canteen is pushed down into the perforated jacket B.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A canteen, in combination with a perforated jacket provided with a stop or catch, and means i'or'supplying heat, substantially as described.
2. The canteen A, in combination with the jacket B, provided with the stop or catch F, substantially as described.
3. The canteen A, in combination with the jacket B, provided with the stop or catch F, and lamp 0, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand this 11th day of October; 1881.
\VILLIAM M. JOHNSTON.
