SASH-CORD CLAlVlP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,729, dated November 15, 1881.
Application filed June 17, 1881. (No model.)
To all ywhom it may concern Beit known that I, OHRIsTrAN J onN SCHEEL- KY, a citizen ofthe United states of America, residingatMartinsburg,in the countyofBerkeley and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in De- Vices for Raising, Lowering, and Securing Window-Sashes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear'7 and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention consists in certain improvements in devices for raising, lowering, and securingwindow-sashes,which willbehereinat'ter described, and pointed out inthe claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of the inside of a window having my iinprovement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the line m of Fig. l. Fig. 3 represent-s in perspective and in elevation, partly in section, the cord-retaining and sash-clamping device.
A is the boxing or framing, which is of usual construction. Bis the upper and C the lower sash, both of which are shown as suspended and balanced on a single pulley, D, at veach side of the frame A.
D represents a cord-guard for holding the sash-cord f in position on the pulley, and for which I am about to apply for Letters Patent. The upper end of the cord j" is secured to the side ofthe upper sash, B, and thence passes up to and over and around pulley D, from thence down to the lower sash, C, froml whence it passes to a catch, F, to be presently described. This cord-retaining device F is pivotally secured near the bottom of the lower sash. This catch F is eccentrieally pivoted to the sash in order that it may readily swing` into engagement with the inner bead, as will be presently described.
The catch F, in my preferred form, consists ot' a metal plate, h, having screw or nail holes h, by which it is secured to the sash, and a pivot-hole, l, in which is pivoted, out of the center, an arm, 7s, having at its upper end an outwardly-projecting lug, m, having at one edge a recess or groove, a, in which the cord f enters, and at the lower end a correspondingly-projecting lug, o, slotted to receive the lower end of the cord, which is provided with a tassel to prevent its slipping out of a slot, p, in either the side or front of the lug. The upper lug, m, has in its top face a dovetailed recess, s, in which is inserted a strip of rubber, t.
When it is desired to clamp the sashes in an y position the lower ends of the arms 7c are slightly moved horizontally toward the center. This will bring the upper ends, m, ofthe arms near the inside bead, m', and cause the rubber strips t to bind against such bead, and thereby hold the sashes firmly in their raised positions.
In lieu of forming the plate h and the arm k separately, I may form the arm with an eccentric pivot-hole and secure said arm directly to the lower sash, and thereby dispense with the plate h.
In Fig. 4 I have shown an arrangement by which the sashes B C may be raised directly by means of the cord, in lieu ot raising them by hand or independently of each other; but I do not in this application make any claim to such arrangement, reserving to myself the right to make such arrangement the basis of a future application for Letters Patent. The lower sash can be raised by itself by simply holding the cord and taking up the slack.
It is intended to apply the cords f of such length that when the catches F are placed in clamping connection with the inside beads the tension of the lower ends of the cords will tend to force the lower ends ofthe catches outward and thereby strengthen the clamping operation ofthe upper end of F.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein is- In a sash-balance, the cord-retaining and sash-clamping attachment F, pivoted eccentrically to the lower sash, and having at its upper end recessed lug m a, dovetailed groove s, and rubber strip t, and at its lower end recessed lug o p, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
C. J. SGHEELKY.
