Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in spinning frames, twisting frames and the like, and more especially to an improved means for mounting the cylinders which extend longitudinally of the spinning frame and around which the tapes pass that drive the spindles.
Heretofore, in order to remove a cylinder from the spinning frame, twisting frame and the like, it has been necessary to remove the cylinder longitudinally from one end of the frame and then to remove the cylinders successively from the frame. lt is often necessary to remove any one of the cylinders in a spinning frame, there generally being three or more, due to the bearings becoming worn or the cylinder being out of balance.
The primary object of this invention is to provide means whereby any one of the longitudinally extending cylinders may be removed from a spinning frame, twisting frame and the like, independently of the other cylinders and whereby the bearing block disposed between the proximate ends of any two of the cylinders may be removed or replaced as desired without the necessity of removing the associated cylinders from the machine.
It is another object of this invention to provide a head member for the proximate ends of the cylinder having a removable portion therein and to provide a bearing block in which the shaft disposed between the proximate ends of the cylinders is rotatably mounted and whereby the removable portion of the head member may be removed irom the proximate ends of the cylinders and the shaft along with the bearing blocks may then be partially rotated to where the opposite ends of the shaft will pass out of the opposite sides of the cylinders and may thereby be removed from the bearing block without the necessity of removing the cylinders.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a plurality of the cylinders and showing portions of a spinning frame, twisting frame and the like, associated therewith;

Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numerals il] and Il indicate the end frame members of a spinning frame, twisting frame and the like, and the numeral I2 indicates cross-bar portions of Samsons which are the intermediate frame members of a spinning frame or the like. in the present invention cross-bar portions oi the Samsons I2 areprovided with a suitable pin i3 located in the center thereof and projecting upwardly therefrom. This pin has slidably mounted thereon a bearing block broadly designated at I5. This bearing block I5 has outwardly extending base portions I6 having arcuate slots I1 therein which are adapted to be penetrated by screws I8 for securing the bearing block I5 to the Samson I2.
The bearing block I5 has a shank portion 2i) which is square in cross-section and which may be engaged by an open ended wrench for rotating the bearing block I5 about the pin I3 when the screws I8 are loosened for removing the shaft, to be later'described, which is associated with this bearing block I5.
The bearing block I5 has an enlarged upper portion 2l in which a suitable anti-friction bearing 22 is mounted and this anti-friction bearing 22 has a shaft 23 rotatably mounted therein. The opposite ends of the shaft 23 extend into head members broadly designated at 25 and being disposed at the outer ends of sheet metal tape cylinders 25. The head members 25 are preferably cast and each of the head members 25 comprises a bell-shaped portion 21 having 'its outer end ferruled as at 2S for securing the sheet metal cylinder 25 to the same. The bell-shaped portion 21 has integral therewith a boss portion Si] having a semi-circular cavity 3| therein which is adapted 4 5 to engage the shaft 23 adjacent one of its ends.
Referring to Figures 5, 6 and '7 it may be observed that the sheet metal cylinder 25 is cut away along the lines 35 and 36 and the head member 25 is cut away along the lines 31 and 38, thus forming an opening for receiving an insertable member broadly designated at 40 (Figure 8).
The insertable member 40 comprises a curved sheet metal plate 4I which conforms to the curvature of the cylinder 25 and has its right-hand end in Figure 5 recessed as at 42 and this recessed edge 42 is reinforced by a semi-elliptical strap member 43 which is curved to conform to the contour of the recess 42. This recessed portion d2 is adapted to cooperate with a semi-elliptical 90 recessed portion 45 in the periphery of the cyl- The insertable member 4U has a bo'ssportion 50 and an outwardly extending plate portion 5l which is cast integral therewith: and this outwardly extending plate portion 5| is bent upon itself to form a ferrule 52 which has the' same' radius as the ferrule 28; The left-hand end of the sheet metal plate vIH' is confined in -theif'errule 52 of the member fit. plate 4l extends to the points 55. The boss 5U of the member 4:3 has a semi-circular cavity 53 therein which conforms tol andl is adapted to engage'the shaft 23- as the insertable member 40 is inserted in the opening! defined by the lines 37 and' in the head member 25.
The boss portion 5D of the insertable member 4D'is penetrated by screws 54 which are threadably imbedded in the boss portion 38 of the head member 25 tothus secure the member 40 to the head member 25. The'. opening 41; heretofore described, is provided for inserting a suitable socket wrench orthelike therethrough for tightening the screws 54.
The description of parts refers to the bearings and shafts and the left-hand ends of the cylinders andlike'reference characters applyfto the righthand end of. alllof the cylinderswith the prime notation added.
Nowwl1en it is necessaryto remove a shaft 23 from any one of the bearing blocks. I5 or' it isnecessary to remove one or the other of the cylinders 26, it ismerely necessary to insert a socket wrenchor the like in the opening Hand to loosen the screws 54 which secure -the member 4D to the head member 25 and to thus remove the insertable member 4?; from the cylinder 26. The' same is true with the other of the-cylinders 2S adjacent the same so the bearing block l5'may be rotated. in the manner heretofore described to approximately 4'the position shown in Figure 4. When vthe opposite ends of theshaft 23 have passed beyond the recessed portion 45 on the cylinders 25, it is obviousthat'the shaft may be' withdrawn from'the bearing-block I5 and as a result, the proximate ends of the cylinders 26 would then be freeto remove `from the spinning frame',A if so desired, or a new connecting shaft can beV installed.
In the drawings'andspeciiication'there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although speciiic'terms are employed, they are usedA in a generic' and descriptive sense only; and not'foripurpo'ses of limitation, the scope of the invention beingdenned in the claims.
We claim:
l. In a textile machine-such as a spinning frame and the like, having a 'plurality' vof longitudinally extending cylinders mounted therein and having Samsons and a shaft disposed between the proximate ends of the cylinders disposed therein, a bearing block for the shaft, a pivot pin' projecting upwardly from the Samsons anden which the bearing block may be mounted formanual rotationin a horizontal plane, said cylinders having head members in the ends thereof and in which theremote ends of the shaft are @fixedly secured;- each of said r head members r and the- The right-hand endof the 4 ends of the cylinders having coinciding openings therein in which an insertable member is disposed and said insertable members having means for clamping the same tothe" re'moteends of the shaft, sa'idshaft being rotatably mounted in the bearing block and whereby the insertable members may be removed from the head members in the proximate ends of two adjacent cylinders and all4 the intervening bearing block may be partially rotated'about itscvertical axis to where the ends of the shaft will be moved through the openings in the-cylindersrthereby permitting the shaft to be Withdrawn longitudinally from the bearing block; A

In a sheet metal cylinder for spinning frames and the like,- ahead member mounted inV each endof the cylinder, each of said head members comprisingabell shaped member having a boss integraltherewith, said'boss having a semi-circular cavity therein' `and one end of a shaft being adapted to be inserted inthe cavity, the end of the bell-shaped member being bent around the end of the sheet metal cylinder to form a ferrulef for securing the sheet metalcylinder to the head' member, .said bell-shaped member having an opening thereima removable member conforming; to the shapeof-the'bell-shaped member and having a boss thereon, said removable member being adaptedto bevinserted in the opening in theV bell-shapedmember, saidremovable member having a semi-circular cavity conforming to the diameter ofthe shaft and whereby the removable member may be mounted in the opening in the bell-shaped member and the boss of the removable' member may be secured totheboss of the bell-shaped member forfclamping the end of the shaft therebetween, .th'eend ofthe cylinder having an opening. therein andthe removable member havingian arcuate member secured thereto having the same vradius as `the cylinder for closing the opening in the cylinder.
3. Meansfor rotatably mountingand-securlng together the proximate'ends of closely spaced oylindersin'a spinningframe and the like, comprising a bel-l-shaped member mounted in the proximateA ends of two adjacent cylinders, each of4 said bell-shapedmembers 'having an opening inone side thereof extending tofthe end of the cylinder, an insertable member adapted to be inserted in the opening and a shaft extending from one of the bell-shaped members to the other of the kbell-shaped members and each of the bellshaped members havingv means' for'clamping the insertable member to" the` bell-shaped member for securing the shaft in the cylinders, a Samsonl disposed between the 'proximate ends of the cylinders, a bearing block mounted on the Samson and inV which the* shaft is rotatably mounted, said bearing block-havingarcuate slots therein whichA are adapted tobepenetrated by screws for securing' the bearing block izo-the`v Samson whereby the insertable members may be removed from the shaft and the cylinders, and the screws'may be loosened and the block maybe rotated about its axis andthe'screwsfollowing the arcuate slots in a shaft rotatably ini said-bearing-member and extending from each side thereof, a pair of cylinders having their proximate ends disposed adjacent each side of the bearing member and into which the two ends of the shaft project, a member mounted in each end of the cylinders and closing the ends of the cylinders and extending backwardly away from the ends of the cylinders and having means therein for receiving the ends of the shaft and detachably securing the ends of the shaft to said members, a portion of said member and a coinciding portion of the periphery of the respective cylinder being cut away, an insertable member disposed in said cut away portion, means for securing the ends of the shaft in position to thereby coni-lne the shaft, each of the cylinders having an opening radially disposed from the securing means and through which a suitable wrench can be inserted for removing the cap member on the securing means. whereby the insertable member can be removed and the bearing member loosened so the bearing member and the shaft carried thereby can be rotated to a point where the shaft carried thereby can be removed from the cylinders through one of the openings formed by removal of the insertable member.
5. In a spinning frame, twisting frame and the like having Samson members and bearing members mounted on said Samson members and projecting upwardly, means for mounting the bearing members so they can be rotated on a vertical axis, each of said bearing members having a shaft rotatably mounted therein, said frame having a plurality of tape driving cylinders therein, the proximate ends of two cylinders being disposed in spaced relation to each side of a bearing, a head member mounted in each cylinder and projecting away from the end of the cylinder and having a shaft receiving portion formed integral therewith, the head member and a coinciding portion of the periphery of the cylinder being cut away, an insertable member disposed in said cut away portion, said insertable member having a boss portion thereon, bolts for releasably securing the boss portion to the shaft receiving portion and the cylinders having an opening in their periphery radially disposed with relation to the bolts securing the boss portion in position, so the bolts can be removed when the boss portion is removed from the shaft receiving portion and whereby the said boss portion and the insertable member may be removed whereby the bearing member may be rotated on its vertical axis to a point where the shaft carried by the bearing member may be removed endwise from the bearing and out through the openings in the periphery of the cylinders formed by the removal of said insertable member.
