G. A. HASKINS CIGAR AND PIPE LIGHTER.
No. 249,520. Patented Nov. 15,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. HASKINS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO B. F. HYDE, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
CIGAR AND PlPE LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of "Letters Patent No. 249,520, dated November 15, 1881. l Application filed May 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HASKINS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi- .5 nois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar and Pipe'Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a button or burrof such configuration as will enable it to be readily adjusted to a match, to be. ignited by the striking of the match, and of such composition as will cause it to at once take fire upon the contact of flame and maintain a state of combustion until reduced to a cinder, the object of the invention being to provide an auxiliary to a match which shall, in large numbers,
occupy little space, which cannot be set fire to by percussion or friction, but can be in anylight quickly combinedwith the match to form a lighter for cigar or pipe which will not be extinguished by wind or rain.
In the drawings, Figure I is a plan view of the burr, Figs.II and Ill being different views of theburr when combined with a match.
"The burr B, in the form of a button or disk having the hole I) through its face, 1 punch in the shape shown from a sheet formed of the following materials, subjected to the hereinafter-mentioned treatment: Asheettwenty-four 0 by eighteen inches, having the thickness of onetenth of an inch, is formed of pulverized wood pulp and raw cotton, in about equal weights, by compression between rolls, when the two substances are thoroughly mixed. This sheet is 3 5 soaked in a solution formed of one-half ounce niter, one-fourth ounce nitric acid, one ounce glycerine, and one-half pint of water, and, when thoroughly saturated, is dried by being passed through rolls heated to the temperature of about 260 Fahrenheit. From the sheet thus formed the burrs B may be readily cut out; but v the above-named ingredients may each or all be changed to produce a sheet from which buttons may be punched or afford a substance from which a burr of any desired configuration 5 may be produced without a departurefrom the principle of my invention, the essential feature of which is a combustible burr so formed as to be readilyattachable andadjustableto a match, to catch at once upon thelighting of the match, to retain tire under circumstancesin which the match would be put out from wind or rain.
In practice I prefer the form shown in the drawings, as the button, by means of the hole b therein, is passed over one end of the match h and along it until it brings up against the enlarged head it, when it is in position to hecome effective upon the striking of the match. The disk forms a large available surface for communicating fire to cigar or pipe, and the match-stem securely retains the lighted disk thus collared upon it until its substance is entirely consumed, and so prevents any danger to surrounding objects; also, the flat form of the button enables a large number, to be carried in the pocket or packed in a small box, and as they can only be ignited by fire directly in contact with them they are perfectly safe in all situations.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a match stem or splint provided with a friction or percussion head, of a combustible burr or button, of configuration adapting it to be readily attached to said stem or splint, andv to occupy little space when carried upon the person uncombined with the same, substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES A. HASKINS.
