Thisinvention relates to improvements in moving picture film reels and has reference more particularly to a reel that can be separated so astopermit the roll of film to be removed therefrom.
In the moving picture industry the films containing the pictures are usually handled and transported while wound on suitable reels which protect the edges of the film and facilitate winding, unwinding and handling.
After a moving picture has been used for a considerable length of time, or after it has been damaged through tearing, etc., it is usually discarded and for this purpose it is removed from the ordinary moving picture film reel onto aninexpensive reel and sometimes stored without-the use of a reel being merely held together by suitable wrappings.
In the. ordinary moving picture film, reel the film can be applied and removed therefrom by winding operation only. When a film hasoutlived its usefulness for any reason, and is to be, put into storage to be held for desilvering or for any other purpose, a large amount of time can be saved if the film can be removed from the reel without rewinding onto another reel.
It is the object of this invention to produce a moving picture film reel of such construction that it can be readily separated into two parts so that a moving picture film wound thereon canbe easily removed therefrom and either positioned on a storage reel or otherwise prepared for storage or desilvering.
Another object of the invention is to produce a reel that can be separated and onto which a roll of film can be applied without the usual windiing operation.
Av further object of this invention is to produce a reel for the purpose above indicated-which shall be so constructed that the sides can be made with a single die, if desired, and which shall be provided wit ha readily releasable locking means that will hold the two parts in assembled relation or release them for separating the roll of film therefrom.
Having thus called attention to some of the objects of this invention and, in a general way indicated the construction of the reel itself, the latter will now be described in detail and for this purpose reference will be had to the accompany- 2, ing drawing in which the invention has been illustrated in its preferred form, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a reel constructedin accordance with this invention;
Figure2 is aside elevation similar to that shown in:.Eigure 1, showing the central part of the reel to va somewhat enlarged scale;
Figure 3 is a view taken from the opposite side of the reel from that shown in Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a section taken on line 4-4, Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a section taken on line 55, Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a section taken on line 6-6, Figure 2.;
Figure 7 is a section taken on line 1-1, Figure 2; and
Figure, 8 is a section taken on line 8-8, Fig ure 3..
Referring now to the drawing, reference lnu merals Illa-and II designate the two sides of the reel. These parts are practically duplicateseach having a centrally depressed portion comprising a cylindrical surface I2 and a flat bottom portion t3. It will he observed that the center portions are slightly offset outwardly so as to provide two circularridges that have been designated by reference numeral 13a, in Figure 6. The ridges are of such height that the opposed surfaces of bottoms I3 are spaced a sufiicient distance to receive. the plate I4 which has its center offset to form the hub portion designated by reference numeral I5.
The inner edge of the center bottom I3shown at the under side in Figure 4 is offset outwardly asshown at I'Ii, forming an opening for the reception of flange ll of hub member 15a, all as shown in Figure 4. The annular flange of member I4: is provided with at least three openings for the. reception of the upturned edge I8 of member I3 at the bottom in Figure 8,. The upturned edge I8 serves as a rivet to hold members I3 and I4 inassembled relation. By means of this interconnection, the hub comprising parts I5 and 15a, is secured'to the center part I3 of reel side; II. The part designated by reference numeral I4 is provided with three upwardly extending lugs 19 whichrhave beenshown as spaced apart and which, are provided at their ends with projecting portions 20, as shown most clearly in Figure 3 '7. The bottom I3 of side H1 is provided with three radial slots so positioned that lugs [9 can project through them. One of the radial slots has been shown in Figure 7 and designated by reference numeral 2|. A plate 22 is positioned in the depression of side In and held in place by means of projections 23 cut from the cylindrical wall l2 and bent inwardly so as to overlap the outer edge of plate 22, as shown in Figures 2 and 4. Plate 22 has a central opening for the reception of the hub portion l5. Plate 22 is provided with two projections or lugs 24 that are cut from the material of the plate and bent outwardly forming what might be termed handles for use in turning it. Plate 22 is also provided with three openings 25 that are of keyslot form having one end of increased width as indicated at 26. The width of these openings at 26 is suflicient to permit the widened ends of lugs l9 to pass through and a the narrow portions of openings are spaced closer than the width of the outer ends of the lugs and therefore when plate 22 is turned to the position shown in Figures 2 and 7, the two sides of the reel will become interlocked so as to form means of a plunger 21 that is mounted for recipro- '5:-
cation in a housing 28 as shown in Figure 6. f A spring 29 is positioned between the inner end of the plunger and the closed end of the housing. ;A rod 30 connects the plunger with a head 3i that can be grasped by the operator. The inner end'of head 3| has a pin 32 that will enter an'opening in the end of housing 28, permitting the plunger to project through registering openings in the four plates as shown in Figure 6. This holds the parts secure in assembled position. When the reel is to be separated, plunger 21 is retracted sufficiently to bring the end of pin 32 to a position below the closed end of housing 28, after which head 3| may be rotated slightlybringing the pin out of register with the opening and this will hold the plunger in unlocking position, after which plate 22 may be rotated to bring the keyhole slots 25 to a position in which lugs l9 may pass through the widened end portion thereof. This releases the two sides of the reel and permits them to be separated, whereupon the film that-is wound thereon may be easily and quickly removed. After the roll of fllm has been removed, the parts may be reassembled into the position shown in Figure 6 for the reception of more film.
It is also possible to transfer a roll of film from one reel to another when reels having the construction shown in the drawing and described herein are used. Part 13 of the reel side lfl is provided with a lug 33 that serves as a stop and limits the angular movement of plate 22. 1 From the above description it will be evident that the reel which forms the subject of this Particular attention is called to the fact that the two sides are duplicates and that they may be made by a single die. The ofiset part [6 can be put in by a separate operation and it is even possible to provide both of the reel centers with this offset if the additional operation necessary to ofiset one of the duplicate parts should make this desirable.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A separable moving picture reel, comprising two circular sides, each having a circular central depressed portion, the bottom of each portion having: a central opening, the two sides when in assembled relation with the bottoms of the por- .tions facing each other, forming a reel for the 1 reception of moving picture film, a central hub ..-havingv an axial opening for the reception of a spindle, said central hub having a circular flange about its center, positioned between the bottoms of the first mentioned portions and rigidly attached to one of them, said flange having a plurality of lugs projecting from the free side thereof, said lugs having enlarged heads, the bottom of the other reel side having openings through which the lugs project, and means for latching the two sides comprising an annular plate posi invention and which has been described above is accidental tioned in the central depression of the said other side, means for movably interconnecting the plate with the wall of the depressed area to permit a limited angular movement, said plate having' a' plurality of keyhole slots positioned to receive the ends of the lugs, the narrow portion'of said slots being movable into position between the hub bottom and the enlarged heads of the lugs to secure the two sides in assembled relation.
2. A separable moving picture reel comprising, two complementary side members, each of which has a central depression having a flat bottom and a cylindrical wall, the two side memberswhen assembled with the bottoms of the central depressions in contact, forming a reel of which the two central depressions form hub receiving portions, the bottoms of the central depressed areas having central openings, a hub having an axial spindle receivingopening and an outwardly ex tending flange, the hub positioned in the openings in-the bottoms of the central depressions, with the flange positioned between the bottoms, means securing the flange to one of the bottoms, the flange having a plurality of angularly spaced lugs with enlarged heads projecting from the free side thereof, the central bottom portion of the other depressed area having openings for the reception of the lugs, and means for interlocking the sides, comprising an annular latch plate posi tioned in the depressed area Whose bottom has the lug receiving openings, said last named plate having a keyhole opening for each lug, the narrow portions being narrower than the width of the lug heads, whereby when the latch plate is in one rotary position, the parts will be interlocked, and hand grip lugs for use in turningth latch plate. "1 3. A separable moving picture reel, compris ing, two circular sides, each having a circular depressed portion, the portions being in juxta posed relationship, and movable means disposed between the outer face of one side and its dc pressed portion for removably securing the depressed portions together.
'4. A reel in accordance with claim 3, including means disposed between the outer face of one side and its depressed portion for preventing movement of said movable means.
5. A reel in accordance with claim 4 wherein said movement preventing means is connected to one side of the reel and at least a portion of the securing means is connected to the other side.
6. A separable moving picture reel, comprising two circular sides, each having a circular central depressed portion, the portions being in juxtaposed relationship, means on one portion extending through apertures in the other portion for preventing angular movement between the two portions, and movable means selectively engageable with the means aforesaid for preventing relative movement between the portions in a direction laterally thereof.
'7. A reel in accordance with claim 6 wherein the last named means is mounted for rotary movement on one portion.
8. A reel in accordance with claim '7, including means for preventing movement of the rotary means in a direction outwardl from the center of the reel.
9. A reel in accordance with claim '7, including means for locking the rotary means to the depressed portions in a predetermined position.
10. A reel in accordance with claim '7 including means for limiting the rotary movement between two predetermined positions.
11. A separable movin picture reel, comprising two circular sides, each having a circular central depressed portion, the portions being in juxtaposed relationship, means on one portion extending through apertures in the other portion for preventing angular movement between the two portions, means mounted for rotary movement on one portion selectively engageable with the means aforesaid for preventing relative movement between the portions in a direction laterally thereof, means for locking the rotary means to the depressed portions in a predetermined position, and stop means engageable with the rotary means for establishing the predetermined position.
12. A separable moving picture reel, comprising two circular sides, each having a circular central depressed portion, the portions being in juxtaposed relationship, means on one portion extending through apertures in the other portion for preventing angular movement between the two portions, means mounted for rotary movement on one portion selectively engageable with the means aforesaid for preventing relative movement between the portions in a direction laterally thereof, and locking means mounted for movement in a direction laterally of said portions for locking the rotary means to the depressed portions in a predetermined position.
13. A separable moving picture reel, comprising two circular sides, each having a circular central depressed portion, the portions being in juxtaposed relationship, means on one portion extending through apertures in the other portion for preventing angular movement between the two portions, means mounted for rotary movement on one portion selectively engageable with the means aforesaid for preventing movement between the portions in a direction laterally thereof, and means for locking the rotary means to the depressed portions in a predetermined position, said locking means adapted to be moved to an inoperable position and be retained thereat.
