4 Claims. (Cl. 273-25) This invention relates to improvements in base -bags with covers for use on a baseball diamond.
An object of the invention is to provide an im- -proved base bag having a removable wear cover A for the top and sides thereof which will take most of the wear from the players cleats, thereby providing a much greater length of time the base bag will be serviceable before the same has to be replaced.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved base bag and a removable protecting cover therefor, said cover being made with wear resisting cross stitched reinforcing welts over its upper surface and integrally formed depending sides adapted to be placed in' position overa base bag and to be fastened thereto by means of spaced snap fasteners disposed on the several sides of said bag and cover.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved base bag with crossed reinforcing and base positioning straps, and a detachable wear cover for said bag having spaced fastening snaps on its four sides adapted to hold said cover on the bag and to extend at the opposite sides of the strap buckles to hold the same in position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a reinforced wear resisting cover for base bags which will protect base bags from the hard usage given them by the cleats on the baseball players shoes, said covers being considerably less expensive to replace than to replace the base bags.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved base bag and detachable protecting cover therefor which will be highly ecient in use, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a base bag with the improved protecting cover secured thereon;
Figure 2 is an exploded view of the base bag with the improved protecting cover removed therefrom;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the improved base bag protecting cover;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the improved base bag protecting cover;
Figure 5 is a partial sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 3;
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the base bag being partly broken away and in section to show the construction thereof, and
Figure 7 is a bottom plan view of the improved base bag.
Like characters of reference are used through,- out the following specication and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved base bag generally designated by the reference numeral I, the same being substantially square in shape and provided with a double wall of canvas or other heavy fabric 2 and 3.
The base bag is preferably filled with layers of -cotton 4, or with any other desired material. The
upper surface of the base bag I is stitched at 5 to reinforce the same and the slotted leather reinforcing tabs 6, 'I, 8 and 9 are sewed to the upper side edges of bag, said slots I0 providing means whereby the reinforcing and base bag positioning straps I I and I2 may be inserted and crossed over the top of the bag between the layers of fabric 2 and 3. The straps will completely encircle the bag I and will be crossed on the outside thereof at the bottom of the bag, whereby means will be provided for securing the base bag in proper position upon a baseball diamond. 'Ihe fastening buckles I3 and I4 for the straps Il and I2 will be disposed on the side edges of the bag I to lie between the spaced male portions I5 and I6 of the snap fasteners, reinforcing stitching II being run about the fasteners to keep the same in position.
The improved protecting cover for the base bag I comprises a top 20 and integral depending side walls 2 I, the same being formed with double layers of heavy canvas stitched together by the stitches 22 along the side walls, said double layers of canvas being spaced at the top to receive the thin layer of cotton or other desired reinforcing material 23, the same being held in place by means of the crossed and zigzag rows of stitching 24 run through the cotton and layers of canvas thus forming the raised welts 25 which serve to reinforce the cover and to resist the cutting action of the cleats on the baseball players shoes.
The spaced headed female or socket snap fasteners 26 and 21 are secured to the opposite sides of the cover 20 and are snapped over the male fasteners I5 and I 6 when the cover is in position upon the bag to hold the same firmly thereon.
After continued use, the removable covers may become cut and require replacement, and by using these replaceable Wear covers, the base bags may be used with a number` of the protecting covers before they are rendered unusable. Since the cost of the protecting covers is relatively small in comparison with the cost of the base bags, a decided saving in the cost of the base bags used during a playing season will be effected.
From the foregoing description, it Will be apparent that there has been provided a highly efficient and useful base bag and replaceable protecting cover therefor which will entail a decided savings in expense for base bag equipment over the base bags now on the market.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to .limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be.- resorted to Without departure from the spi-rit ef the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A base bag lcomprising a case having side Walls, a top and a bottom each of which being of a double thickness of material, the said top having slots. in the cuter thickness of .material adjacent the. top edges of the case, straps extending through opposed slots and crossing between the thicknesses of material in the top of the case, said straps crossing on the outer thickness of said bottom.
2. A base bag comprising a case having side of a double thickness of material, the said top havingv slots in the outer thickness of material adjacent the top edges of the case, straps extending through opposed slots and crossing between the, thicknesses of material in the top of the case, said straps crossing on the outer thickness of'said bottom, and slotted wear tabs adjacent said slots secured to the outer thickness of. said top.`
t. The combination of claim 2, and a cover having sides,` a top portion and an open bottom, and means attached to said sides spaced from thel edges thereof for cooperation with said fastening means, to attach the cover to the case. JOSVFPI-Il JOSSELSON.
