This invention relates to wire reeling and unreeling machines and is more particularly directed to reeling attachments securable to and operable by farm tractors.
- The object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive wire reeling and unreeling mechanism readily securable to the frame of a farm tractor and operated from the belt pulley thereof so that barbed or other wire may be readily reeled and unreeled and which provides a simple manually-operated control to distribute the wire on the reel during the reeling operations.

Referring now to the drawings, numeral I designates a portion of one of the frames of the tractor chassis to which a fixture 2 is securable. This fixture has a spindle 3 suitably secured thereto on which a pulley wheel 4 is rotatably mounted that is provided with a hub 5. The hub has a plu rality of slots formed therein which are adapted to be engaged by suitable prongs 6 that are formed on a sleeve 1 rotatable on the spindle 3, the prongs 6 being insertable in the slots in the pulley wheel 4 in order that the two will be connected together. A suitable reel 8 is mounted on the sleeve 1 in a manner to rotate therewith. The prongs 6 are held in the slots in hub 5 by means of a spring 9 fitted on the spindle 3, one end of which engages a washer I which has a friction element I I associated therewith that is in engagement with a washer I2 operatively associated with the sleeve 1. The sleeve 1 may be appropriately shaped, if desired, to form a cooperating face for the triotion element II. The spring 9 is placed in compression by means of a sleeve I3 that fits over the end of the spindle 3 and is held in adjusted position by means of a pin I4 insertable in a plurality of diametrical bores I formed in the outer end of the spindle 3, thereby enabling the tension of the spring 9 to be varied at will.
A stationary guide It is suitably secured to the tractor frame I and has a plurality of spaced rollers I! mounted therein. The rollers nearest each other serve as wire guides and the others serve as spacers. A lever I8 is pivoted to the outer end of the frame It and is also pivoted to the 7 Claims. (Cl. 24293) 2 sleeve member I3, thereby constituting an outboard support for the spindle 3. The rollers I! are so spaced that they define the limits-of the reel 8 so that wire will be confined to the winding space on the reel 8. 1 Wire is guided across the reel8 as it rotates by means of a guide mechanism I9 in which'a plurality of rollers 20 are rotatably mounted. Two of the rollers 20 are mounted close together between which the wire is passed for guiding the wire so that the tractor operator may have better control thereover. The other rollers on guide I9 serve as spacers. The guide I9 is supported on one end of a lever 2| that slides in slot IS in guide I6 and is pivotally supported on a bracket 22 that is a part of the fixturez2. i The-opposite end of the leverll extends to a position. adjacent the tractor operators station so .tha'the' can conveniently guide the wire'back and forth across thereel8. The pulley 4 is connected to the tractor-pulley by means of a belt 23 during reeling operations, the tractor being driven at a suitable speed so that the wire can be properly wound onthe reel 8. This mechanism is also employable as a wire unreeling device but during this operation the belt 23 is not employed and the tractor is then driven at a suitable speed. In order to prevent excessive unwinding of the reel, the friction ele-' ment I I acts as a brake for the reel 8 in order to prevent too rapid unwinding of the wire reel. This mechanism provides a convenient and simple mechanism employable for both reeling and unreeling operations and which may be quickly attached to and detached from an'ordi nary farm tractor to thereby materially expedite the building of barbed wire fences and the reeling of barbed wire when they are taken down.
What I claim is: I l. A wire reeling attachment for a tractor frame comprising a spindle; means for securing. said spindle to the frame of the tractor so that the spindle projects from the frame; a pulley rotatably mounted on said spindle; a reel supporting sleeve rotatably mounted on said spindle and enga-geable with said pulley; means to urge said sleeve into engagement with said pulley; a stationary wire guide supported on the tractor frame; a movable wire guide; a lever to move said movable guide and operatively associated with said stationary guide, said movable guide threading wire across said reel and said stationary guide confining the wire threading within the length of said reel; and a lever connected between said stationary guide and said means to provide an outboard support for said spindle.
2. A wire reeling attachment for a tractor frame comprising a fixture securable to the frame of the tractor; a spindle associated with said fixture and projecting from the frame; a pulley rotatably mounted on said spindle; a reel supporting sleeve rotatably mounted on said spindle; means to urge said sleeve into engagement with said pulley; a stationary wire guide mounted on the tractor frame; a movable wire guide; a lever operatively associated with said stationary guide and on which said movableguide is mounted, said movable guide threading wire across said reel and said stationary guide confining the Wire threading within the length of said reel; means associated with said fixture on which said lever is pivotally supported; and a lever connected between said means and said stationary guide to provide an outboard support for said spindle.

A wire reeling attachrnent for a tractor comprising a fixture securable to the frame of the tractor; a spindle associated with said fixture and projecting from the frame; a pulley provided with a hub having apertures therein and rotat ably mounted on said spindle; a. reel supporting sleeve rotatably mounted on said spindle and provided with means to engage said apertures; means to urge said sleeve into engagement with said pulley; a stationary wire guide mounted on the tractor frame; a movable wire guide; a lever operatively associated with said stationary guide and on which said movable guide is mounted, said movableguidethreading wire across said reel and said stationary guide confining the wire threadins wi hinthe Iengt-h of said reel; means assoc 'ated with said fixture on which said lever is pivotally supported; and a lever connected between said means and said stationary guide to provide P wire guide Supported on the tractor frame; a
movable wire guide; a lever to move said movable uide and operatively associated with said stationary guide, said movable guide threading wire across said reel and said stationary guide confining the wire threading within the length of said reel; a lever connected between said stationary guide and said means to provide outboard support for said spindle; and means associated with said sleeve to retard reel rotation during unwinding operations of said reel.

A wire reeling device comprising a spindle securable to the frame of the tractor and profleeting from the frame; a pulley rotatably mounted on said spindle; a reel supporting sleeve r0- tatably mounted on said spindle and ns s bl with said pulley; means adjustably mounted on said spindle to urge said sleeve into engagement with said pulley; a stationary wire guide supported on the tractor frame; a movable wire guide; a lever operatively associated with said stationary guide to move said movable guide, said movable guide threading wire across said reel and said stationary guide confining the wire threading within the length of said reel; and a lever connected between said stationary guide and said means to provide outboard support for said spindle.

A Wire reeling attachment for a tractor comprising a fixture securalole to the frame of the tractor; a spindle associated with said fixture and projecting from the frame; a pulley provided with a hub having apertures therein and rotatably mounted on said spindle; a reel supporting sleeve rotatably mounted on said spindle and provided with means to engage said apertures; a stationary wire guide mounted on the tractor frame; a movable wire guide; a lever operatively associated with said stationary guide and on which said movable guide is mounted, said movable guide thrcading wire across said reel and said stationary guide confining the wire threading within :the length of said reel; means associated with said fixture on which said lever is pivotally supported; and a lever connected between the unsupported end of said spindle and said stationary guide to provide outboard support for said spindle.

A wire reeling device comprising a spindle securable to the frame of the tractor and projecting from the frame; a pulley rotatably mounted on said spindle; a reel supporting sleeve r0- tatably mounted on said spin le and engageable with said pulley; means adjustably mounted on said spindle to urge said sleeve into engagement with said pulley; a stationary wire guide supported on the tractor frame; a movable wire guide; a lever operatively associated with said stationary guide to move said movable guide, said movable guide threading wire across said reel and said stationary guide confining the wire threadingwithin the length of said reel; a lever connected between said stationary guide and said means to provide outboard support for said spindle; and means associated with said reel to retard reel rotation during reel unwinding operation.
