Description

n 1950 M. COMPIANO 7 2,493,618.
MEASURER FOR MARKING TROUSERS TO BE SHORTENED Filed Nov. 1, 1948 i 5/ 9 la 117 zls o a I I v I I I l N i9 INVENTOR. o 6 W I: o 1 a Patented Jan. 3, 1950 3 Glaims.
This invention relates to a -"device "adaptedto be used by clerks= or ot-hers having limited experience in the art of tailoring to aid in the shortening ane "alteration of *trouser legs.
It is the object-:ohmy -invention to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive device so constructed and arranged that it can be easily and quickly adjusted by the movement of a single graduated element to the length that it is desired to shorten the trouser leg, and when so adjusted provide means whereby the trouser leg being altered may be marked by chalk to the desired length and at right angles to the inseam and for the drawing of lines parallel thereto to indicate the width of the cuff to be formed on the lower end of the trouser leg without any mental calculation other than the setting of the movable gauge.
A further object of my invention is to provide in a cuff marker means for marking both sides of a trouser leg without turning trouser leg over.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated and attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved gauge for altering the length of trouser legs.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 illustrates a trouser leg to be shortened and the manner that my improved gauge is applied thereto for marking with chalk the amount to be shortened and also the folding lines of the cuff.
Figure 4 illustrates the marker plate folded over the marker head to show the chalk marks as applied to the trouser leg.
Figure 5 illustrates the manner in which that portion of the trouser leg below the head plate is folded over the marker plate to permit the under side of the trouser to be marked without disturbing the position of the gauge and the manner that the chalk is applied to make the mark.
Figure 6 is an enlarged end elevation of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 11 of Figure 2.
Figure 8 is a perspective view showing the first fold in making the cuff.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the finished cuff with a portion broken away.
My improved device comprises a measuring stick I 0, including a fixed member II and a mov- --able graduated member 7 a longitudinal-slot T3 for ==s'1i'dab1y receiving an I 2, the memberll havin meiiiber lzfl-the innerenddiwhe member l l nav- "ing a'stirrup 1 6 through which themeinber l2 slides.
Fixed to the outer end of the member H by means of rivets I8 is a head plate l'l. Each end of the plate l! is provided with a hinge I9. Fixed to the movable members of said hinges is a marker plate 20 having that portion of its inner edge between the hinges cut away to provide a slot 2|. The plate 20 is also provided with a cen trally located slot 22. The hinges l9 are mounted with the inner side of their barrels in alignment with the inner edge of the head plate l1 so that the entire inner edge of the plate I! will be unobstructed when the plate 20 is folded over the plate I! as shown in Figure 4 to permit chalk to be moved fully along the entire length of said edge.
The movable member I2 is graduated in inches and fractions thereof to represent the distance between the outer edge of the plate I! and. the free end of the member [2, the outer end of the member ll serving as an index for said graduation.
In the practical operation of my device, assuming that it is desired to shorten the trouser leg 24 to a length of 32 inches, the member I2 is moved outwardly unit the thirty second indicant is opposite the end 25 of the member II. The nut of the bolt I4 is then tightened to lock the members i l and I2 together. The corner 26 of the member I2 is placed against the crotch seam 21 with its corresponding edge along the inseam 28, and with the head and marker plates flat against the top surface of the trouser leg as illustrated in Figure 3. One corner of the chalk 28 is then placed in the slots 2| and 22 which form guides for drawing lines 29 and 30. The chalk may then be placed against the lower edge of the plate 20 to draw line 3|. The plate 29 is then turned over to position on top of the plate H as illustrated in Figure 4. That portion of the leg below the plates I! and 29 is then folded over said plates as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6. One edge of the chalk 33 is placed against the under surface of the trouser leg opposite the lower corner of the plate I! as illustrated in Figure 6 and a line drawn opposite to and parallel with the line 29.
The device may then be removed and the undesired portion of the leg may then be cut on the line 3| after which that portion below the line 29 is folded inwardly as shown in Figure 8 with the 3 free end sewed or cemented in place. The lower portion below the line 30 is then folded outwardly and upwardly to form the cuif 34.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a cuff marker of neat appearance, simple, and of cheap construction, in which the desired length may be easily and quickly set up with inexperienced help and no mental calculation other than the knowledge of the length required. The slotted plate provides the proper spacing of the marks for cutting and folding the cuif. The folding of the marker plate provides for marking the upper and lower sides of the trouser leg without having to turn the trouser over.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, comprising an adjustable measuring stick having a marker head fixed to one of the ends and at right angles thereto, a marker plate having a central longitudinal slot and one edge pivoted to the outer edge of said head adapted to fold over said head plate, the pivoted edge of the marker plate being provided with a notch to form a chalk guiding groove when the plates are in a common plane.
2. A device of the character described, comprising the fixed member of a measuring stick. a
graduated movable member, means mounting the last member to move longitudinally of the first, means for locking the movable member to anyone of a member of its adjustable positions, a marker head fixed at right angles to one end of the first mentioned measuring stick and a marker plate having one edge hinged to the outer edge of the head plate to swing from position in a plane common to the fixed head, to position overlapping the head plate, the marker plate being provided with marker slots.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a fixed measuring stick having a marker head fixed to one end and a longitudinal slot through its center, a graduated stick slidably mounted beneath the fixed stick having a set bolt mounted in said slot, and a marker plate having a central slot and one edge hinged to the outer edge of the head plate to swing from position in a plane common to the said head, to position overlapping the head plate, said plates having a slot between their hinged edges to form a chalk guide.
