Application April 16, 1947, Serial No. 741.85!
Claims. (Cl. 229-36) This invention relates to improvements in a covered box or container.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a covered box or container which may be stored or shipped in the knockdown and quickly and easily set up for use and one in which the cover .is eifectively retained in closed position.
Second, to provide a box or container having these advantages in which the parts are so arranged as to provide a fairly rigid structure when erected even when formed of quite light box or container stock.
Third, to provide a box or container having these advantages which may be formed of an in- 2 nections for the parts, the several scores being conventionally shown at II. The body end walls are provided with the diagonally disposed weakening lines l2 which provided joint flaps |8ll at the front ends of the body end walls. These Joint flaps are collapsible on the outer sides of the body end walls and the corner flaps 8 of the front wall are secured thereto preferably adhesively.
The cover end walls have the diagonal weakening lines ll providing triangular joint flaps ll foldable on the outer sides of the cover end walls and to which the corner flaps ill of the front wall are secured, preferably adhesively. This permits the body end walls and the body front wall betegral blank with substantially no waste in stock. I
Further objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an end perspective view of a box or container embodying my invention, a portion of the cover being broken away to illustrate structural details and the relation of the cover to other parts.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view partially in section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with the cover shown in closed position by full lines and in partially open position b dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is an inside perspective view of one corner of the box or container body.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the structure collapsed.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the structure shown in Figs. '1 to 4 is formed.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form or embodiment of my invention, parts being broken away to show structural details.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view with the cover open.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view on line 8-8 of Fig. '7.
Fig.1 9 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on line 99 of Fig. 6.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, comprises a bottom I, front and rear body walls 2 and 3 and body walls 4-4, a cover 5 which is hingedly connected to the upper edge of the rear body wall, and a cover front wall 6 whichis hingedly connected to the swinging edge of the cover. Cover end walls 1'! are hingedly connected to the ends of the cover. The front wall 2 is provided with front corner flaps 8-8 and the rear wall 3 is providedwith rear corner flaps 9- 9. The cover front wall 6 is provided with corner flaps Ill-l0. All of these parts are formed of an integral blank suitably scored and slit to provide hinging con- Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive, the bottom 20 has a front ing collamed as illustrated in Fig. 4; also cover and end wall as there illustrated providing a box which is known as an infold box.
The joint flaps II have tongues l6 projecting from their front edges, these flaps being cut out of the bottom edges of the front wall corner flaps as is clearly shown in the blank of Fig. 5. Whenthe container is erected, these tongues l6 project forwardly of the body front wall as is illustrated and retainingly engage the cover front wall when the cover is in closed position. The front wall corner flaps are preferably provided with lugs I! which project from the bottom edges thereof and 7 cut away from the end edges of the joint flap portions of the body end wallsas is clearly shown in the blank of Fig. 5, these lugs I! being adapted to firmly engage the bottom of the container when the container is erected to hold the body front wall in erected position and they also tend to hold the end walls in erected position to most effectively receive the cover.
Topermit the collapsing of the container with these projecting lugs, the bottom is provided with slits l8 at the hinge of the front wall thereto, these slits receiving the lugs when the container is collapsed as is shown in Fig. 4. The container may be quickly set up 'to receive its contents and the cover closed and is effectivel retained in closed position by the projecting tongues or lugs In the embodiment of my invention shown in body wall 2| and a rear body wall 22 hingedly secured thereto and also end body walls 23 hingedly connected to the ends thereof. The cover 24 is hingedly connected to the upper edge of the rear body wall. The cover is provided with a front wall 25 and end walls 26. The end body walls 23 are diagonally scored at 21 providing folding flaps and joint flaps 28 which have corner flap extensions 29 adhesively secured to the inner side of the front body wall 2|. Tongues project from the corner flaps 29 substantially beyond the end of the front wall, these tongues being cut from the joint flap 2!. The cover end walls 28 are provided with diagonal scores it which proacoasaa end walls 23 have downwardly and forwardly inclined slits 38 extending from their rear ends and terminating in curved upward extensions 31 so that portions 38 thereof may be deflected inwardly to permit engagement of the rear ends of the cover end walls therewith as shown in Fig. 6. When the cover is closed it is retainingly engaged by the tongues 30 which maybe deflected somewhat as shown in Fig. 9 in the event the cover end wall is of sufliciently close fit to necessitate such deflection. However, the cover is effectively retained substantially as in the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive.
I have not attempted to illustrate other embodiments or adaptations of my invention as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
