DENNIS O. BURDIOK, OF MILTON, WISCONSIN COMPOUND METAL-WORKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,297, dated November 8, 1881.
Application filedAugust25, 1251. (ModeL) Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to machines which are designed for punching and shearing metal;
and it consists, essentially, in a novel construction and arrangement of the several parts of the machine, whereby I obtain great strength and durability, and also great facility in the manipulation of the different kinds of work, as will be fully understood from the following description.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is an elevation of one side of my combined shearing and punching machine. Fig. 2 is a central section taken longitudinally and vertically through the machine. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the adjustable gage.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the three figures.
The letter A designates the horizontal bed or bench, on which is secured, by means of bolts a a, the strong frame B. This frame B is composed of two vertically and centrally divided cheeks or parts rigidly bolted together, as shown. Y
O designates a strong lever, which is fulcrumed between the two ears or by means of a bolt, 1), and is guided at and near its rear end between the two standards 0 of the frame. This lever is made broad and strong, and its longest arm is connected to the enlarged seg meat-shaped end of a hand-lever, O, by means of an arc-shaped link, d. The lever O is fulcrumed to said standards 0 by means of atransverse bolt, 6, which, with the bolt b, connects the upper parts of the frame B together.
Lever G extends forward over the lever G,
. as shown, and is in a convenient position to be operated by an attendant at the front part of the machine. g
The front or short arm of the lever (.l is recessed, so as to leave a depressing-shoulder, e ,'and a raising-shoulder, eZbetween which is a lug, f, formed on the back of a punchblock, D, in which punch-block is combined a removable punch, g.
this die is a passage for the free escape of the punchings.
Back of the punch-die h is a long passage,
in which is applied an adjustable gage, F,
which is held in place by means of a. set-screw, j. On each side of the punch I apply a curved plate or clearer, k, for clearing the punched metal from the punch as it ascends.
The two clearersare secured to the frame B, and should be adjustable.
G designates an oblong slot, which is made through one cheek of frame B opposite an oblong passage, Z, through the lever O, to the upper part of which passage 1, and secured to said lever, I apply aknife or shear, H, so that it will out with a shear-stroke against the edge of a blade, H, secured to the cheek of the frame B, and shown in Fig. 2. These shears are for cuttingflat iron. Below the said shears a number ot'holes. n, are made transversely through one'ot' the cheeks of frame B, which holes terminate in a shear-plate secured to the back of said cheek. The said holes are of dilferent sizes, for receiving through them several different diameters of gages of round rod metal, which is out bythe scalloped-edge shear-blade N, fixed to the lever 0. (Shown in Fig. 2.) s l Having described my invention, I claim-*1 l. The combination, with the frame B, the
great lever 0, its shoulders c a, punch D, its
lug f, hand-lever C, curved connecting-link d,
