The outer ends of the element I8 have fixed radial arms 25 at the outer ends of which the cover I3 is pivotly attached. The cover I3 includes a top wall 26, an angular wall 21, a rear wall 28 and :a pair of side walls 29. At the juncture of the top wall with each of the side walls there are provided a pair of -blade shifting lugs 30. These lugs are adapted to engage Vcorrespondingly positioned indentations in the side edges of the razor blade (not shown) and to extend down to the oppositely disposed slots 3I in the platform I2. The upper portion of the handle is provided with a pair of bosses 32 which engage .corresponding openings (not shown) in the platform I2 and by means of which the handle I I may be assembled with said platform. The central upper portion of the handle I includes .a guideway 33 within which the rack member I4 is slidably mounted for motion forwardly and rearwardly of the razor. The rack member is of irregular shape best seen in Figures 1 and 4 of the drawings and includes a spring enclosing recess 34, a latch receiving notch 35 and a series of transversely arranged rack teeth 36 and a finger engaging tab 3l. The rack teeth 36 are in engagement with the pinion portion 24 in such manner that when the pinion is in engagement with the rearmost teeth, the rack member I4 is in its forwardmost position and the rear wall 28 engages the portion 38 at the upper part of the handle Il. Extending downwardly from the lower surface of the platform I2 is a rear spring support 39 which may have a boss 40 about which the rearmost convolutions of the spring I are engaged.
The handle I0 is provided with an axial bore 4I within which is disposed the latch spring I'I. The latch I6 includes a notch engagement tip 42, a body member 43 having a forwardly projecting actuating member 44. The actuating member 44 extends forwardly through the slot 45 which slot communicates with the bore 4I. The lower end of the body 43 may have a pin 4E penetrating the spring I1.
The notch 35 and the tip 42 are so positioned with respect to each other that the tip 42 may enter said notch and seat therein when the cover I 3 is in its closed or fully seated position.
Operation of the present razor is a simple and convenient matter. Assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Figure 2 and that the blade I9 is due for replacement, the razor may be grasped in the right hand with the fingers of said hand encircling the portion 4'I of the handle II. The thumb of the user engages the actuating member 44 and moves the same downwardly as viewed in Figure 2, thereby compressing the spring I'I, until the tip 42 disengages the notch 35. The expansive pressure of the spring I5 will move the rack member I4 forwardly to the position shown in Figure 1 which in turn rotates the element I8, the arms 25 swinging the cover 2B up and back until the rear wall 28 engages the portion 3-8. At this stage a flick of the wrist will dislodge the blade I9 without the necessity of handling the same, and the blade may be thrown from the platform I4 into any suitable container. Next, the new blade corresponding to the blade I9 is placed or dropped upon the platform I2 by a manual operation or from a magazine respectively. Now the finger engaging tab is pressed rearwardly by the thumb of the user which closes the cover element by a reversal of the previously described operation, and when the cover element is in its fully seated position, the tip 42 seats within the notch 35 under the expansive pressure of the spring II returning the parts to the position shown in Figure 2.
Turning now to the alternate form of the rack member shown in Figure 5, for the pur-pose of avoiding unnecessary repetition, parts Acorresponding to the first form of rack member are given the same reference characters with -the prex 1. The principal difference in the alternate form of Figure 5 lies in the fact that the rear surface I5!) of the notch |35 is disposed in a plano which slopes inwardly from the longitudinal axis of the latch II6 and the rear surface I5! of the tip |42 is arranged in a corresponding plane.
v,The length of the latch I I6 is such that the terminal surface I 52 is spaced from the surface I53 when the cover element 26 is in its fully closed position, compressing the blade I9 by virtue of this structure, and of the fact that the notch I35 is large enough at the forward margin thereof not to contact the forward surface of the tip |42. The tip E42 has a wedging action under the expansive pressure of the spring I'I to constantly urge the cover element 26 to press against the blade I9.
We wish it to be understood that we do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
We claim:
l. In a razor having a blade platform, a handle and 'a movable cover adapted to engage a blade between itself and said platform, means to vactuate said cover comprising: a motion transmitting element connected to the cover; a member movably disposed with respect to said platform and engaging said motion transmitting element whereby when the movable member is in a rst position thereof the cover is disengaged With respect to said platform, and in a second position thereof the cover is in an engaged position with respect to said platform; resilient means urging said movable member to the first position thereof; and latch means to retain the movable member as moved to a position lclosing sai-d cover.
2. In a razor having a blade platform, a handle and a movable cover adapted to engage a blade between itself and said platform, means to :actuate said cover comprising: a motion transmitting element connected to the cover; a member slid- Iably disposed with respect to said platform and engaging said motion transmitting element whereby when the slidable member is in a first position thereof, the cover is disengaged with respect to said platform, and in a second lposition thereof the cover is in an engaged position with yrespect to said platform; and resilient means urginlg said slidable mem-ber to the first position thereof, said slidable member having a notch; and a movable latch engageable with said notch when said slidable member is in a predetermined @position thereof.
3. In a razor having a blade platform, `a handle and a movable cover adapted to engage a blade between itself and said platform, means to actuate said cover comprising: a motion transmitting element connected to the cover; a member slidably disposed 4with respect to said 'platform and engaging said motion transmitting element whereby when the slidable member is in a first position thereof, the cover is disengaged with respect to said platform, and in a second position thereof the cover is in an engaged position with respect to Isaid platform; and resilient means urging said slidable member to the first position thereof, said slidable member having a notch; and a movable latch engageable with said notch when said slidable member is in a predetermined position thereof; and resilient means urging said latch in the general direction yof the shiftable member.
4. In .a razor having a blade platform and a movable cover adapted to engage a blade between itself` :and said platform, la cover actuating mechanism comprising: a pair lof spaced levers radially mounted on an axle at the ends thereof; said cover being pivotally mounted on the ends of Said levers; a pinion on said axle; la slidably mounted rack engaging said pinion; resilient means to urge the rack in a direction to lopen said cover; and latch means to retain the rack as moved to a position closing said cover.

In .a razor having a blade platform, la handle and a movable cover adapted to engage a blade between itself and said platform, means to factu- Iate said cover comprising: .a motion transmitting element connected to said cover; :a member movably disposed with respect to said platform and engaging said motion transmitting element whereby when the movable member is in the first position thereof the cover is disengaged with respect to said platform, and in a second position thereof the cover is in an engaged position with respect to said platform; resilient means urging said movable member to the rst position there- 30 of; `and latch means acting in the engaged position thereof to retain said movable member in the second position thereof, said latch means including .a resilient member urging the latch means to a position of engagement, whereby when the movable member is in a predetermined position, yengagement of the latch member therewith takes place automatically.
6. In a razor having la blade platform, and la movable cover adapted to engagea blade between itself and said platform, a cover Iactuating mechlanism, comprising: an axle journalled lon said platform, said axle having a pinion; a Ipair of spaced levers, one radi-ally mounted on each of the ends of the axle; said cover being pivotally mounted on the outer ends of said levers; a slidably mounted rack engaging said pinion, said rack having an operating trigger; resilient means to urge the rack in `a direction to open said cover; and latch means to retain the rack as moved to a position closing said cover, said latch having an operating handle in juxtaposition with said trigger.
