TED sins PATENT ormon.
JOHN J. ADAMS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MANUFACTURING BRUSHES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 2,490, dated March 12, 1842.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN JAY ADAMS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacturing of Brushes, of which the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forms a full and exact specification.
In the same I have set forth the nature and principles of my invention by which it may be distinguished from others of similar character, together with such parts or combinations of the same as I claim and for which I solicit Letters Patent.
My improvement is applicable to what are termed double brushes that is to say, those which are composed of bristles arranged upon opposite faces of a block of wood.
Figure 1, of the above mentioned drawings represents a side elevation of a brush of this character wherein it will be observed that a denotes the block of wood in the top face of which bunches Z), b, b, b, of bristles are inserted and project upward, directly over similar bunches c, 0, c, c, inserted and confined in the lower side of the block.
The peculiar nature of my invention is exhibited in Fig. 2, which may be supposed to be a transverse vertical section of the brush, taken centrally through a series of its holes in which the bunches of bristles are confined. In said figure it will be perceived that holes (Z, (Z, &c., are bored through the block a, and two bunches b, and c of bristles are passed into each of these holes, the bunch b projecting upward and the bunch 0 er:-
I tending downward as seenin the drawing.
The method of confining these bristles in position is by two wires 6, 7, each of which is doubled and passed through the hole in opposite direct-ions, in the usual manner of sewing bristles into a block, so as to form a loop, through which a sufficient quantity of bristles g or it is passed, and when the wires 0 and f are pulled in opposite directions, the bristles g, It will be drawn by them into the hole until they meet together in the central part of it as exhibited by the bunches Z), c, in the drawing. The wires 6, f, are then doubled or looped and passed through the succeeding hole and other bristles are so inserted until the brush is completed.
The method generally practised heretofore of manufacturing double brushes, has been to insert the bristles in separate blocks, which afterward were glued or otherwise properly confined together. By my. improvement in arranging and confining the bristles in one block I am enabled to effect a great saving of labor, besides producing a cheaper and more durable article than has been in use.
Having thus set forth my invention I shall claim Constructing the double brush by boring holes entirely through a block and inserting two bunches of bristles in each of said holes so that each bunch shall project from one side of the block in an opposite direction to that of the other bunch and drawing and confining said bunches of bristles in said hole by two wires as hereinb-efore explained, the whole arrangement and process being substantially as hereinabove described and represented in the accompanying drawings.
In testimony that the foregoing is a true description of my said invention and improvement I have hereto set my signature this third day of February in the year eighteen hundred and forty two.
