(Cl. 197-113) The present invention relates to a line drawing device suitable for use on typewriters, calculating machines and the like, and has for its object to provide an auxiliary element or accessory which, by the manner in which it acts mechanically in mounted position serves almost as an additional type element for tabulating and making all kinds of lines, both horizontally and vertically.
Typewriters and other hand-operated typing machines, have latterly been improved from every point of View, but all of them ignore the question of drawing lines which are so frequently necessary in diierent classes of work as to become a practical want, felt by the operator in general, who must rely upon improvisations which are a burden owing to the loss of time implied by their execution.
For these reasons, a device especially designed to meet this want and having al1 the necessary means for putting it immediately into service such as, in fact, the present invention concerns, may be classied as a necessary adjunct to complete the components of manual typing machines or apparatus.
The line drawing device of the present invention consists in a carrier for writing instruments which by means of a support is mounted in a convenient position on the machine so as to have the writing point directed towards the roller, but without being in permanent engagement therewith, since to this end it is movably mounted on the support and is provided with actuating means which may readily be operated to bring the device into writing or marking position.
In addition to the foregoing, the present invention contemplates various objects, amongst which may be pointed out the possibility of bringing the line drawing device into play without interrupting the typing for a time longer than that strictly necessary for the operation.
Another object of the invention isv to obtain clean lines both horizontally and vertically, since in addition to a retraction mechanism, the mounting comprises a resilient system which maintains the pressure necessary to ensure engagement of the paper, or other writing surface provided in the machine.
A further object is to enable any kind of writing instrument to be used in the device, whether such instrument be specially designed for the apparatus or of the so-called pocket variety, since in addition to the mounting, the line drawing device comprises pencil or pen holders.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent in the course of the detailed description thereof which for greater clarity and readier understanding has been illustrated by various gures in which the line drawing device has been shown in a preferred embodiment, by way of example.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the device shown in operative position, that is to say that the point of the writing instrument is in contact with the paper supported on the roller of the manual typing machine or apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a view of the same assembly as shown in Fig. l., but in inoperative position, that is to say with the writing instrument retracted so as to ieave the space 4free for continued operation of the type bars of the machine.
Fig. 3 is a View of the device after being rotated through with respect to the assembly shown in previous Fig. 2; in this ligure, by means of a partial section, We have shown the cam governing the retraction of the writing instrument, and finally,
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the device applied to a typewriter the paper of which, located on the roller of the carriage, has been tabulated with horizontal and vertical lines drawn by the aforesaid device.

As may be seen in the drawings, a is the support which has a housing I through the bore of which is tted the movable element b. Said movable element b comprises a carrier 2 which is tubular and has a frusto-conical end 2 in which lts the frusto-conical portion of the writing instrument 3, which is accommodated in the hollow of the carrier 2. The frusto-conical end 2 terminates in an aperture 2" through which projects the writing point 3' which may be that of a pen or a pencil. The writing instrument 3 is secured by the gripping action of the tongues formed by cuts 4 in the screw-threaded portion `5. On said screw-threaded portion 5, is a nut 6 which is somewhat conical so that as it moves forward along the thread of the portion 5, it may exert progressively compressive action in order to create the grip which holds the writing instrument 3 in position.
The carrier 2 has an annular projection 1 against which the spring 8 bears, which spring surrounds the carrier 2 and is enclosed in the housing l, and bears on the seat 9 formed in said housing. Under the pressure of said spring B, the movable element b tends to advance and occuy the operative position shown in Figs. 1 and The movable element b includes a hood l0 which is intimately united to the carrier 2 and the bore of said hood is such that it can slide telescopically over the surface of the housing I of the support a. The hood I0 of the device b has internally a cam II the pin I2 of which is rotatably; tted in a hole I 3, throughwhicl} said pin I2 extends, outsidethe hood LID, whereitgtr- Inmates in an operative knob I4. By a hand actuation of said knob the cam may be brought into one of two positions, one of which is shown in Fig. l, and the other of which is shownin Figs. 2 and 3.
The position of Fig. 1 is thatagorrespondngto the inoperative position ofthe cam,-.whi ch thong lies in a transverse direction with its smallest dimensions lying between the hood and thehousing, so that it does not prevent the spring from displacing the device b towards the operative position thereof, that it to say, so that the writing point3' ,engagesthevpaper I 5 disposed .onthe roller IG of the manual typing machine or apparatus c on which the linedrawing device is The position of Figs. and 3 is that in which the retraction has been effected, -since the cam `I I- by interposing its major dimension between the hood and thehousing I of the supporta forces the movable member b-backwards ysufficiently yto retract the point 3 from the paper I5 and permit the voperator to continue writing ,thereon as, usual in manual typing apparatus- Since the support a i s fixed to any portion of the manual typing vleaching 0r apparatus, as shown in Fig. 4, it V is sufficient to bring the cam II into theposition o f Eig. l in order that the ,spring 8 may displace ytheV movable Vmember b until thewriting point 3 of the member 2 engages the paper I disposed on the roller I5 of the carriage of the machine c.
