SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,985, dated November 1, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GUs'rAv BEHRNs and GUSTAV UNRUH, citizens ot' and residing in the free city of Lubeck, Empire ot' Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elevators and Hoisting Apparatus, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the elevator and hoisting apparatus embodying our invention, the hull ot' the vessel whose contents are to be discharged being shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view, enlarged, partly sectional, of a detached portion thereof. Fig. A is a vertical section of Fig-3. Fig. 5 is a top view of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the elevator-buckets employed in the present case; but other forms may be adopted.

Our invention consists of a frame formed of a series of bars jointed together after the manner of lazy-tongs, a number of pulleys, and an endless bucketconveying band, whereby the frame may be adj usted relatively to the locality' from whence the `load is to be elevated or discharged, said frame then serving as a rigid frame to sustain the endless bucket conveying band as the buckets are filled, elevated, discharged, and returned.
It also consists of a gravitating pulley, in
. combination with an endless bucket-conveying band and an extensible depending frame provided with pulleys, over which said band passes, said gravitating pulley causing said band to automatically adjust itself to the contractin g and eXpandin g of said frame.
It also consists ofa depending extensiblel'azytongs frame provided with a chain and pulleys for shortening and lengthening` said frame, and with other pulleysfor the passage ot' an endless band, in combination with said band,the buckets carried thereon, and the crane or frame of the device.
It also consists of a depending .lazy-tongs frame, in combination with a crane or frame and an intermediate swinging frame, which forms a double joint for the lazy-tongs frame,
whereby provision is made For the lateral adjustment of the latter.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the float or support of the elevator, and Z the vessel to be discharged.
B represents a crane, which is tted in a step, c, on the support A as a vertical axis, so that it may be readily swung around relatively to the position ofthe vessel Z.
E represents the engine operatin g the belting or gearing ot' the elevating mechanism, and F the steam-boiler thereof, both properly placed on the ioat or support A.
To the outer end of the horizontal limb ot' the top ofthe crane B is pivoted, by means of bolts g, a swinging frame, y, from which dopends a jointed frame, H, formed ot' bars h, pivoted, as at t' lc, after the manner oflazy-tongs, said swinging frame y also supporting a shaft, on which are keyed or otherwise secured pulleys n, as most clearly seen in Fig. 5. The bottom of the lazy-tongs frame also carries similar pulleys, a2, and similar pulleys are mounted on the horizontal and vertical limbs of the crane, for the guidance andsupport ot' the endless belts or conveyers s of the buckets t, which belts pass around the pulleys n, a2, o, and q. The pulleys g have their bearings fitted freely in vertical guidesr r on the upright limb of the crane, whereby said pulleys by their gravity serve to maintain the tension of the endless belts s.
Attached to the central pivot of the lowest bars of the lazy-tongs frame are chains l, which pass around pulleys m on the crane, and are wound on a drum, m', conveniently accessible. The power of the engine or motoris communicated to the pulley g by the belt u, and movement is thus imparted to the belts s, which, carrying the buckets t, move the latter into the load and then elevate them. (See the direction of the arrow, Fig. 3.) When the loaded buckets reach the pulleys o their contents are discharged into the spout p, and thence directed to other parts of the elevator proper.
It will be seen that the lazy-tongs may be raised and lowered or folded and unfolded, the frame H thus being adapted to be adjusted relatively to varying depths of holds of ships and other localities to be discharged of their IOO contents. Vhen the frame is to be shortened the chain l is wound on the drum on. This folds the bars ofthe lazy-tongs, and the slack of the bucket conveyer or bands s is immediately taken up by the gravitating-pulley q, around which said bands are passed, as has been stated. Then the frame El is to be lengthened, in order to penetrate greater depths, the chain is unwonnd from tbe drum m and the bars of said frame H unfold, the frame lowers, and the weight ot' the conveyer and bucket raises the pulley q, thus keeping said conveyer or belts s at the proper tension.
Provision is made for the slack of the beltV u, which communicates the power of the engine or motor to the gravitating pulley q. The folding and unfolding` of the bars ofthe frame H also facilitate the introduction of the said frame into and from the ship or other locality.
The top frame, y, suspended from the bolts or axis g, permits` the lazy-tongs frame H t0 be swungor moved laterally, and the pivotal connection ot' said frame H with the frame y allows the frame H to be moved or swung inwardly and outwardly as a double joint, and thus the load may be readily reached when in places otherwise inconvenient of access.
The bottom of the frame H is properly guarded for preventing injury, &c.,vto tbe pulleys n by bars, &c., at said bottom.
The buckets are scoop-shaped and connected at their sides and rear ends to the belts s, whereby, after they have entered the hold, &c.,
and passed into the grain, &c., and are filled.
with the same, they assume an upright position until they reach the top limb of `the crane, and then a horizontal position until they reach the pulley o, where they are overturned and discharged, alter which they pass around the pulleys q, and so return to the ship, Src.
lf desired, the crane may be mounted on a lighter, to receive a load, or its load be discharged and directed therefrom to another locality, and the crane may be placed on rails for shifting and adjusting purposes.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An elevator having an extensible frame formed of jointed bars after the manner of lazy-tongs, pulleys, and an endless bucket-conveyiug band, substantially as set forth.
2. A gravitating pulley,in combination with an endless bucket-conveying band and an extensible depending,r frame provided with pulleys, over which said band passes, said gravitating pulley causing said band to automatically adjust itself to the contracting and expanding ot` said frame.
3. A depending extensible frame formed of jointed bars after the manner of lazytongs, provided with a chain and pulleys for shortening and lengthening said frame, and with other pulleys for the passage of an endless bucketconveying yband, in combination with said band, the buckets carried thereon, and the crane or frame ofthe device. y
4. Thelazy-tongsframe,incombination with the crane and a swinging frame, forming a universal joint for the lazy-tongs frame, substantially as and for the purpose set fort-h.
