GUN CHOKE DEVICE Filed June 30, 1947 Syvum/WM a Jol/.v Enf/4r Patented Nov. 29,` 1949 f UNITED STATES LAram* orrice 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a choke for a shotgun barrel;
`An object of this invention is to provide a choke for a shotgun barrel which when in applied position will result in a greater firing range for the gun and a different ring pattern which is determined according to the object being shot.
Another object of this invention isto provide a choke for a shotgun barrel which can be mounted on the present construction of the barrel, the outer end of the barrel being modified by forming threads on which a coupling sleeve is mounted, the choke being `threaded into the coupling sleeve and formed with an unthreaded guide portion, the choke being formed with an opening for engagement by a rod so that the choke can be applied or removed when desired.
A further object of this invention is not only to provide a choke for shot gun barrels, which when in applied position will result in greater iiring range for the gun, but its principal purpose is to give different patterns required by diierent kinds of hunting as, for example, the different kind of shot pattern of a skeet player as against a trap shooter as against, say, also, a rabbit as against a duck. In other words, the object of this device is to give the hunter the particular barrel pattern that he needs under certain circumstances which gives him a variation in the I2 gauge gun to which this particular device is attached. It eliminates, therefore, the need of having onehalf dozen different gauge guns which should be one of its principal appeals.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a shotgun barrel having a choke mounted thereon, constructed according to an embodiment of this invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation, partly broken away and in section, of a modiiied form of choke.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral III designates generally the barrel of a shotgun. The barrel Ill has mounted on the outer end thereof a tubular connector or coupling member general- 1y designated as II. The outer end of the barrel I l) is formed with a smooth peripheral surface I 2, and exterior threads I3 are formed on the periphery of the barrel I0 rearwardly of the smooth surface l2.
The coupling member or sleeve II is formed with interior threads I4 extending from the inner or rear end thereof and is also formed with a smooth bore I5 adapted to engage the smooth surface i2 of the barrel I6. The sleeve II is adapted to be rmly locked in coupling position on the end of the barrel I by means of the threaded shank I6 of a sight member I'I. The sleeve il at a point between the ends thereof is formed withan annular rib I8 adapted to abut against the outer end of the barrel I0 and the inner diameter of the rib I8 is substantially equal to the inner diameter of the outer end of the gun bore.
A choke member generally designated as I9 is adapted to be threaded into the outer end of the coupling member II. The choke member I9 is formed of a cylindrical body 20 formed with a tapered bore and having an enlarged annular rib 2l on the outer surface thereof adapted to abut against the outer end of the coupling member II. The body 26 at its inner end is formed with a reduced diameter smooth peripheral surface 22 adapted to snugly engage within the smooth bore 23 of the sleeve II, extending outwardly from the rib I8.
The inner end of the reduced end portion 24 of the body 2o is tapered or rounded, so as to eliminate any obstruction corners within the bore of the gun and the connector II. The outer end portion of the connector` Il is formed with interior threads 26 and the body 20 is formed with exterior threads 21 engaging within the threads 26. When the choke I9 is mounted in the connector II the inner end thereof will abut against the rib I3 and the exterior rib 2| will abut against the outer end of the connector II.
The rib 2I is formed with an opening 28 for engagement by a rod or the like so that the choke I9 can be readily applied or removed.
Referring now to Figure 4, there is disclosed a slightly modied form of this invention wherein the gun barrel lila has mounted 0n the outer end thereof a coupling sleeve IIa identical with the sleeve II. A choke member ISa is threaded into the outer end of the coupling member II a, being formed with a reduced inner end 24a having a smooth outer surface and also formed with peripheral threads 21a engaging interior threads 26a in the outer end of the coupling member IIa. In the present instance the choke member E9n.
extends straight outl from the outer end of coupling member IIa, having a cylindrical outer surface 29.
In the mounting of this choke on the outer end of the gun barrel I0, the barrel is reduced in diameter to form the smooth surface I2 and is then threaded from the inner end of the reduced diameter portion. The coupling sleeve II is then threaded onto the barrel and the sleeve is locked not only by V`means of the threads I13-,a'nd I4, but 'alsoby means of the set scrtv 'r slfank I6 formed as part of the sight member I'I. The choke member I9 may then be threaded into tl'e outer end of the coupling sleeve I I. Y, Y
Instead of the hunter having diierentlyvgauged guns, differently gauged chokes may' bfe'lovid; the tapers of the chokes being determined'bythe shotting pattern.
I do not mean to confine myself to tIeR'eB-zt Y details of construction h'erein dislosed, but claim all vaiatiohs failing within thepuiview'bflthe appended claim.
