MECHANISM FOR TWISTING WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,946, dated November '1, 1881.

Be it known that I, STEPHEN W. OLNEY, of Plainville, county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Mechanism for Twisting Wire, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention has for its object. the production of a simple, cheap, and efficient machine to uniformly and closely twist together two or more pieces or lengths of wire used in the mane ufacture ofjewelry, and for other purposes.
My invention consists, essentially, in a twisting-head to rotate the two or more lengths or pieces of wire to be twisted together, and a spindle to revolve the wire-receivin g spool, combined with a wire-feeding device located between the said head and spindle, the said feeding device acting also as a holder for the twist, between it and the receiving-spool.

The frame-work A has below it hangers a, to receive the shaft I), and above it uprights a a a a to receive the movingparts, to be described.
The driven shaft 0 in uprights a has a pulley, c, which receives upon it the belt to drive the machine. This shaft 0 has upon it a conepulley,c having two effective diameters, which is connected with a cone-pulley, 0 also of two effective diameters, by an endless band, 0. The cone-pulley c is fast on the shaft d, mounted on the uprights a the speed of the shaft d being made variable by the said cone-pulleys in the usual manner, to rotate more or less rapidly the twisting-bead cl, secured to the said shaft d. The twisting-head carries the spool d upon which is wound the two or more lengths or pieces of wire, d to be twisted together by the rotation of the said head.
The spool d in practice may be provided with a suitable presser or brake, to prevent the spool rotating more rapidly than demanded for the proper delivery of the wire-such, for instance, as in the United States Patent to Elias Howe, Jr., September 10, 1846, or J. A. Bradshaw, November 28, 1848.

I claim- In combination, the shaft 0, its pulleys c and f, the shaft (1, its pulley c and head adapted to carry spool (1 the shaft 1), its pulleys e f the shaft 6 its pulleys c g, and the cylinder e, the spindle n, to hold reel 9 and the pulley thereon, and the belts to connect the said shafts and spindle, substantially as and for the purpose described.
