Fifteen identical typing bars, each having a central opening 69 and generally designated by the numeral 63, are loosely pivoted on shaft 42 and maintained in the spaced axial relation thereon best indicated in Figure 6 by any suitable spacing means such, for example, as by washers and collars, not shown. Each typing bar comprises a pair of diametrically opposed circular segments 69 and 65, Figure 12. Segment 64 is the heavier of the two segments whereby this section is normally urged downwardly under the influence of gravity against a suitable stop 56. The arcuate face of segment 64 is provided with a set of imprint characters 9! numbering 0 to 9. These may be secured to the typing bar in any convenient manner, or may be formed integrally therewith if desired. The arcuate face of segment 65 is formed with a series of ten ratchet teeth 68 by means of which the typing bar may be moved pivotally on bar 42 to bring a desired imprint character thereon into the proper position with respect to the imprint mechanism, as will appear more fully hereinafter.
Also pivotally mounted on shaft 42 is a rocker arm assembly generally designated 69 which comprises an arcuate panel 19, concentrically arranged with respect to arcuate wall 58 of casing 48, and a pair of arms Ii and 12 formed preferably integrally with panel I0 and having suitable openings for loosely receiving shaft 42.
Panel I9 has secured thereto a pair of brackets I3 and 14 which, in turn, have a plurality of op erating magnets 75 carried thereby. There is an operating magnet for each of the fifteen typing bars, seven of the operating magnets being carried by bracket l4 and the other eight by bracket I3. The magnets are staggered in brackets I3 and 19 so that the armatures I6 of the magnets are positioned directly above the typing bars 63 respectively, as best appears in Figures 1, 4 and 5. The armatures for the operating magnets carried by brackets 13 are pivotally mounted and maintained in spaced relation in any suitable manner on a shaft 71 which is supported in brackets 78 and I9. Similarly, the armatures of the operating magnets carried by bracket F4 ar pivotally carried on a shaft BI supported in brackets 82 and 83.
The rocker arm 59 carries a manual operating bar or lever 84 which is supported on panel in spaced relation therewith by suitable posts Arm ll of rocker arm assembly 69 carries a pawl 87 for engagement with ratchet wheel at on the return or upward movement of the rocker arm assembly, thereby to rotate shaft 42 and advance the tape, as will appear more fully hereinafter. of armatures i6 is shaped as a pawl as at 88 and extends through openings 80 and I 00 in panel "I0 and arcuate wall 58 respectively into engagement with the ratchet teeth 68 of electrical insulation material whereby the pairs of sliding contacts 90 and 9| are carried thereby insulated from each other. There is a row of ten pairs of these contacts for each operating magnet, the ten pairs of contacts corresponding respectively to the ten ratchet teeth on the typing bar associated with the operating magnet. For each row of these contacts there is a pair of cooperating contact pins 92 and 93 carried by moving panel 70 and adapted to slidably engage successive pairs of contacts 90 and SI as the rocker arm assembly 69 is moved downwardly. Panel 19, for this purpose, preferably is formed of suitable electrical insulation material whereby the pairs of contacts 92 and 93 may be insulated from each other. These contacts are connected to the ends of the winding of the operating mag net individual thereto, as may best be seenin Figure 9.
Sliding contacts 90 and 9I are secured to panel 89 as by screws 94 which may also serve as binding posts for conductors or wires secured thereto.
A roll of paper 95 is carried on a rod 96 which is, in turn, supported in brackets 91 and 98 sebottom plate 62 of casing 48. The from the roll is drawn over a roller 99, thence between this roller and an idler roller IOI'in rolling contact therewith, and thence under a second idler roller I02 and outwardly of casing 48 through an opening I03 in front Wall 6|.
Rollers 99 and I 9| are pivotally supported in a pair of L-shaped brackets or levers I04 and I05 which, in turn, are pivotally supported as at I86 in brackets Iill secured to bottom plate 62 of casing 98. Bracket levers I94 and I05 are slotted as at 08 whereby the levers may be adjusted along pivotal point I06 so that the portion of paper 95 in contact with the imprint characters 67 on the typing bars 63 moves with the characters during the final downward movement of the rocker arm assembly, the lower edge of panel I9 thereof engages the upturned end portion I09 of levers I04 and I05 causing them to rock about pivots I05, thereby to move the paper on roll 99 into contact with the imprint characters through inking ribbon IIO.
The ribbon H9 is carried in the usual spools III which in this case are driven through bevel gears II2 from a ratchet wheel I I3. The ratchet wheel, in turn, is driven by a pawl II4 which is pivotally secured as at II5 to a lever H6 in turn, pivotally supported on end wall 49 as at I". The other end of lever I I6 extends through an opening I I8 in top Wall 21 and terminates in a horizontal end portion H9 adapted to be yieldably urged against the upper edge of panel 10 by a spring I 2| acting on the lever, whereby end portion II9 follows the panel upon downward movement of rocker arm assembly 69 to cause pawl II 4 to slip over ratchet wheel H3 and engage another tooth thereon, movement of lever II 6 in this direction being limited by stop l22. When panel I9 is restored to its initial position during the return movement of rocker arm assembly 69, the edge of the panel engages and drives end portion I I4, thereby to forcibly return lever H6 to its position in Figure '7 whereby the ratchet wheel I I3 is advanced one tooth and rib,- bonI I9 is advanced to a new setting. I

For this purpose, roller 99 carries a ratchet wheel I23 which is engaged by a pawl I24 pivotally secured as at I25 toa lever I26 which is pivotally secured to end wall I of casing 48 at I21. The other end of lever I26 extends through an opening I28 in top plate. 51 of casing 43 and terminates in a horizontal end portion I29 for engagement with the edge of panel I6 under power of spring I3I. Forward movement of end portion I29 under power of spring I3I is limited by stop I32. Operation oi lever I26 to advance ratchet wheel I23 forward one tooth is the same as operation of lever H6 in advancing ratchet wheel II3 forward o ne tooth and the previous description of theopera-Q tion of the latter ratchet wheel, therefore, will sufilce for both.

The jack panel I6 comprises a plurality of jacks I34 for receiving plug ended cords as in conventional switchboard practice. There are two jacks for each pair of selector switch elements 29 and 34 these being electrically connected on either side of the switch comprising a pair of elements. An additional pair of jacks I35 and I36 connected to the incoming power line, which may be a conventional 110 volt source, are also provided. The jack panel further carries a search lamp I31, a location lamp I38, and an oiT-on power switch I39.
The key panel I! comprises a plurality of keys I4I of the normally closed push button type which open the circuits therethrough when the keys are pushed. There is a pair of keys for each pair of selector switch elements 29 and 34, the keys being connected to the jacks individual thereto.
A selector switch code is employed for electrically connecting the sliding contacts of each row of contacts on panel 89 to the proper switch elements 29 in the selector switch mechanism 23. This code and lead connection designation is as follows:

In the operation of the typing machine to all of the G leads 1, 2,3 and; dare connected together and to the grounded' column of Figures 13a and key I4I, upper l0 produce a history sheet, tape I8 is fed through selector switch 23 by means of crank 43 until the first group of punchings on the tape is reached. These will be the punchings for the location number. Lever 84 is then moved down. During the downward movement of panel 16, various pairs of contacts 92 and 93 in the digit rows under Unit of property (Figures I3a and. I3b) will be momentarily energized by certain pairs of contacts and 9I for the reason that certain pairs of selector switch elements 29' and 34 corresponding thereto in the Unit of property digit columns will be closed in accordance with the punchings in the tape corresponding to the location number. This will cause momentary energization of certain operate magnets I5, and as the magnets are energized their armatures will move into engagement with the ratchet teeth on the typing bars individual thereto whereupon the typing bars will be moved with the rocker arm assembly 59 to move the imprint characters 61 on the typing bars into a position to be engaged by print mechanism operates during the final movement of the rocker arm assembly. This action is illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 wherein sliding contacts 90 and 9I corresponding'to imprint character 6 have been energized, thereby to cause the operate magnet to pick up the foremost typing bar 63 in Figures 4 and 5 as pawl 16' moves to engage the fourth ratchet tooth down, which ratchet tooth corresponds to imprint. character number 6 on the bar. In preparing a summary sheet, a search circuit is built up on the jack panel according to the number of the unit of property to be tabulated. Assume, by way of example, that the number is 753024. This number corresponds to the following combination of B and G leads:

2. in a typing machine of the character disclosed for typing from a punched tape, the combination of a typing roller, a plurality of identical typing bars arranged for pivotal movement about an axis disposed transversely thereof, each of said bars having an arcuate surface adjacent said typing roller and a plurality of imprint characters disposed in spaced relation on the arcuate surface whereby the characters successively are moved diametrically opposite the typing rollers as the bar is pivoted about said axis, rocker means including a panel and a manually operable lever carried thereby arranged for concentric movement to a typing position, a plurality of operate magnets carried by said panel and individual to said plurality of typing bars, each of said operate magnets having an armature for engaging the typing bar individual thereto for movement therewith from the moment the winding of the operate magnet is energized during movement of the panel from said initial position to said typing position, a plurality of pairs of moving contacts respectively connected to the windings of the operate magnets and carried by said panel, a plurality. of rows of stationary contacts individual to said plurality of pairs of moving contacts and adapted to be engagedthereby as the panel moves, each row of contacts comprising a plurality of pairs of contacts corresponding respectively to the plurality of imprint characters on the typing bars individual thereto and correspondingly spaced concentrically about the pivotal axis of the bars, and a plurality of circuits individual to said rows of contacts for connecting predetermined pairs of contacts therein to a source of power selectively in accordance with the punchings in the tape whereby the typing bars are moved to bring imprint characters corresponding to the tape punchings into printing relation with respect to the roller when the operating lever is moved to the typing position there- 3. In a typing machine of the character disclosed for typing from a punched tape, the combination of a typing roller, a plurality of identical typing bars arranged for pivotal movement about axis disposed transversely thereof, each of said bars having an arcuate surface adjacent said typing roller and a plurality of imprint char-' acters disposed in spaced relation on the arcuate surface whereby the characters successively are moved diametrically opposite as the bar is pivoted about said axis, rocker means including a panel and a manually operable lever carried thereby arranged for concentric movement to a typing position, a plurality of op-' crate magnets carried by said panel and individual tosaid plurality of typing bars, each of said operate magnets having an armature for engaging the typing b-ar individual thereto for movement therewith from the moment the winding of the operate magnet is energized during movement of the panel from said initial position to said typing position, each typing bar having a plurality of ratchet teeth arranged diametrically opposite said imprint characters and corresponding thereto, each of said armatures being pawl shaped to engage the ratchet teeth in the typing bar individual thereto, a plurality of pairs of moving contacts respectively connected to the windings of the operate said panel, a selector switch mechanism having a plurality of movable switch elements in contact with the tape and adapted to contact companion switch elements individual thereto as punchings in the moving switch of stationary contacts individual of pairs of moving contacts and adapted to be engaged thereby as the panel moves, each row of contacts comprising a plurality of pairs of contacts corresponding respectively to the plurality of imprint characters on the typing bars individual thereto and correspondingly spaced con-- centrically about the pivotal axis of the bars, and a plurality of circuits individual to said rows of contacts and said plurality of moving and companion switch mined pairs of contacts therein to a source of power selectively in accordance with the punchings in moved to bring imprint characters corresponding to the tape punchings into printing relation with respect to the roller when the operating lever is moved to the typing position thereof.

The typing machine of claim 6 but further characterized in that the imprint characters on each of the typing bars number to 9, each row of switch elements in the selector mechanism comprises seven pairs of movable and companion switch elements, three of seven leads of the first set of leads interconnect the movable switch elements of each row with one side of the pairs of stationary contacts in the row of contacts individual thereto, the other four of the seven leads interconnect the other four movable switch elements in each row with the other side of the pairs of stationary contacts individual thereto, three of a second set of seven leads interconnect the companion switch elements individual to said three movable switch elements with one side of the source of power, the other four of said second set of seven leads interconnect the companion switch elements individual to said four movable switch elements to the other side of the source of power, one of the three leads of said first set of seven to stationary contacts corresponding to imprint characters 0 to 3, the second of the three leads being connected to stationary contacts corresponding to imprint characters 4 to '7, the third of the three leads being connected to stationary contacts corresponding to imprint characters 8 and 9, one of the four leads of the first set of leads interconnects stationary contacts corresponding to imprint characters 0, 4 and 8, the second of the four leads interconnects stationary contacts corresponding to imprint characters 1, and 9, the third of the four leads interconnects stationary contacts corresponding to imprint characters 2 and 6, and the fourth of the four leads interconnects stationary contacts corresponding to imprint characters 3 and 7.

In a typing machine of the character disclosed for typing from a punched tape, the combination of a casing, a shaft supported for rotation in the casing, a plurality of typing bars pivotally supported on said shaft in predetermined spaced axial relation thereon and having diametrically opposed arcuate surfaces having arranged in spaced relation thereon a plurality of imprint characters and ratchet teeth respectively, a typing roller adjacent said arcuate surface having the imprint characters thereon, support means for the roller pivotally mounted on the casing and adapted to move the roller into contact with the imprint characters as the support means is pivoted about the pivot axis thereof, a rocker assembly pivotally supported on the shaft and including a panel having a manually operable handle thereon, a plurality of operate magnets carried by the panel and individual to said plurality of typing bars, said magnets having armatures adapted to engage the ratchet leads being connected teeth on the typing bars individual thereto from the moment the magnets are energized thereby to move the typing bars with the rocker assembly to a typing position thereof, a stationary panel concentrically arranged with respect to said shaft, a plurality of rows of stationary contacts on said stationary panel individual to said plurality of typing bars and operate magnets, each of said rows of stationary contacts comprising a plurality of pairs of predetermined spaced contacts, corresponding to the number and spacing of said imprint characters and ratchet teeth on the typing bar individual thereto, a plurality of pairs of contacts carried by the moving panel and individual to the rows of contacts on the stationary panel, each pair of moving contacts being adapted to engage the stationary contacts in the row of contacts individual thereto successively as the rocker arm assembly is moved from an initial position to said typing position thereof, a selector mechanism for receiving the tape and having a plurality of rows of switches individual to the plurality of rows of contacts on the stationary panel, each of said selector switches including an element adapted to be moved into a punching in the tape to close the switch, means for advancing the tape through the selector mechanism as said shaft is rotated, means for pivoting the roller support to move the roller into contact with the imprint characters as the rocker assembly is moved into its typing position, and a plurality of circuits individual to said rows of selector switches and said rows of stationary contacts individual thereto for energizing the operate magnets selectively at spaced intervals during the forward movement of the rocker assembly in accordance with the punchings in the tape whereby imprint characters corresponding thereto are moved into typing relation to the roller asthe rocker assembly is moved into the typing positions thereof.
9. The typing machine of claim 8 but further characterized in that the machine comprises jack and key panels having respectively a plurality of jacks and a plurality of keys thereon connected in said plurality of circuits, a location lamp mounted on the jack panel and connected across a predetermined pair of said circuits, and means including a search lamp mounted on the jack panel for setting up any one of a plurality of search circuits through predetermined jacks which have been cut off from the typing control circuits by actuation of the keys individual thereto.
10. The typing machine of claim 8 but further characterized by the provision of means operable under control of the rocker assembly for advancing the shaft and the typing roller to new settings during the return movement of the rocker assembly.
