Description
B. SHWAYDER Nov. 22, 1949 GARMENT HANGER Filed Nov. 2, 1945 fi m u I l I n I u I n a /A//e/vroe jm JkM/A/ JVd/A rose Patented Nov. 22, 1949 GARMENT HANGER Benjamin Shwayder, Detroit, Mich., assignor to Shwayder Brothers, Inc., Denver, 0010., a corporation of Colorado Application November 2, 1945, Serial No. 626,246
10 Claims.
This invention relates to garment supporting means and more particularly to hangers adapted for longitudinal locking adjustment on a supporting means.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a garment hanger adapted for use in luggage, or other garment storage means, together with supporting means carried within said luggage upon and relatively to which said hanger may be longitudinally adjusted and locked.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a general use garment hanger, together with a supporting means upon and relatively to which said hanger may be longitudinally adjusted and locked.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a hanger adapted for support upon and longitudinal locking adjustment relatively to a slotted duct.
It is the further object of this invention to provide a pivotal carrying means on said hanger with a portion thereof adapted for cooperative locking engagement with the surface of said slotted duct.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing, of which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the hanger within its support.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view with a portion broken away of the hanger with a slightly different type support.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational section of the hanger and locking means within its support.
Fig. i is a broken away perspective view of a slightly different form of support, and
Fig. 5 is an elevational section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
It will be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely a preferable embodiment of the invention, and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereinafter set out.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 illustrates one form of garment hanger consisting of horizontal crossbar II, with formed garment shoulder supporting members I2, and vertical portions I3 terminating in outwardly extending supporting elements I4.
Hooked member I5 positioned between hanger members I3, is pivotally mounted on rivet I6 which extends through corresponding openings in members I3. Rivet I6 secures hanger members I3 in the position shown, with hooked member I5 adapted for relative frictional engagement with the inner surfaces of members I3.
Channel member I! has vertical flanges 30 with inturned edges 2I to provide a slot I8 in its bottom portion to slidably and supportingly receive hanger members I4. The top surface I9 of supporting channel I1 is adapted to be secured to the top wall 20 of a trunk, grip, or other garment enclosure, as for instance a clothes closet, by welding, by screws, rivets, or any other suitable means.
The hanger manually supported by hooked member I5 or by shoulder members I2, is elevated, and elements I4 projected within the open end of channel member II. Members I4, adapted for sliding support upon the bottom opposed edges ZI of flanges 3!] on said channel, are subject to longitudinal adjustment therein, whereby two or more hangers may be supported if desired, and locked in position.
It is desirable to effectively lock the hanger or hangers Within its or their supporting channel preventing relative longitudinal movement thereof. To accomplish this, various means may be employed carried by said hanger which are adapted for manual cooperative locking engagement relative to some portion of the channel support.
For example, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, hooked member I5 has an upwardly extending portion 22 with a cam surfaced upper end 23 adapted for wedging and frictional engagement with the under surface 24 of channel I1. As illustrated, it appears that for release or for insertion of the hanger within its slotted supporting channel, it is necessary to effect a partial pivotal movement of hooked member I5 about its axis I6 to provide the necessary clearance.
To lock the hanger in any desired longitudinally adjusted position it is necessary to manually pivot hooked member I5 into a substantially vertical position, so that the cam or other end surface 23 of portion 22 frictionally or otherwise cooperatively engages inner surface 24 of channel member I'I. It is contemplated that any number of means may be employed for accomplishing a lock ing relationship between hanger I2-I3--I4 and its channel support, as for instance, providing a transversely corrugated under surface 25 in the channel member 26 as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Here it is desirable that the upper end 21 of hooked member I5 be rounded for cooperative locking positioning between the corrugations 25. It is seen that members I4, slidably supportable upon bottom ledges 2|, cooperate with the upper portion 21 for securing an immovable positioning thereof when hooked member I5 is pivoted into locking position.
Referring to Fig. 4, a slight variation is shown with channel member 28 having a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings or indentations 29. It will be seen that the upper rounded end 21 of hooked member I5, Fig. 2, is adapted for selective positioning within any one of openings 29, when pivoted into locking position. For release, hook member I5 is pivoted sufllciently to aljustably seated on members 2| with the upper end 21 or 23 of hook member l adapted to:operatively engage either a fiat surface as in Fig. l, a corrugated surface as in Fig; 2: or-aperforated-or otherwis irregular surface as illustrated in Fig; 4.
Having described my invention, reference should now be had to the claimsathati foilow for determining the scope thereof.
