1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in brush cutters, an object of the invention being to provide a device of the character herewithin described by the use of which roadside brush, or railroadside brush may be :quickly and econormcally cut down to any desired height, and either with the top vplane thereof horizontal, or at a desired angle of inclination.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is primarily .intended to be tractor-drawn, and is conspicuous for its simplicit and consequent low cost whereby its use may be widely adopted, and by unskilled persons, without the need of frequent servicing or the like.
With the foregoing objects in view, and such other objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of my brush cutter.
Figure 2 is a view as seen from the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of my brush cutter as seen from the line 33 of Figure 2.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
My invention comprises a substantially rectangular framework collectively designated l including as a part thereof a pair of converging members 2, to the bracket 3 connected to which a draw-bar is intended to be hitched.
Secured to my aforesaid framework is a pair of vertically disposed plates 4' of which one edge 5 is curved as seen in Figure 2. The plate 4' is provided with the obliquely disposed slot 6 in which is movable a tightener pulley assembly I.
Mounted in bearings 8 and 9 is a power takeon shaft IE! to the inner end of which is connected a drive pulley ll around which passes a belt l2. This belt passes around the tightener pulley I and also around the crank pulley l3 mounted upon a transversely extending cutterbar assembly M.
The cutter-bar assembl l4 comprises an elongated channel l5 from the end of which projects a cutter-bar support it and by cutter-bar per se H. The channel I5 is suspended at the left end thereof (with respect to Figure 2) by means of the block I8 having trunnions IS in the ends thereof whereby the block is rotatably held via said trunnions in the flanges IQ" of channe1 l5.
Through the aforesaid block extends a screwthreaded aperture in which the screw-threaded supported block22 at the upper end of my framework. In this case the trunnions 23 projecting from the block support the projecting tanglepieces 24 and since a pair of collars on the rod '20 at either side of the block :22 prevent endwise movement of the rod it will be obvious that upon rotation thereof clockwise or counterclockwise the le'ft-end of the channel i5 will move upwardly or downwardly.
The right-hand end of the channel l5 (with respect to Figure 2) is supported in a substantially similar manner to that which I have already described except that in this instance a block 25 is supported on trunnions 26 freely positioned in a pair of bearing portions 27 secured to and projecting upwardly above the flanges IS. The block 25 also provides an end-bearing to the screw-threaded rod 28 which is also cranked at the upper end thereof to provide a handle 2!], rod 28 being however screw-threaded right up to the shoulder 30 of the handle and passing through an internally screw-threaded aperture in a block 3| rotating via trunnions 32 in a pair of angle-pieces 33.
Thus, in the case of rod 28, as the same is rotated clockwise or counter-clockwise, the same will end shift upwardly or downwardly and carry with it the channel i5. To provide ways for the projecting portions of trunnions 26, it will be seen from Figure 2 that plate 4 is vertically slotted as at 34, as is also plate 4.
The supporting plate is is coterminous with the right-hand end of the web portion 35 of channel [5, and mounted for reciprocal movement against the upper surface of said web is my aforesaid cutter-bar H, the same being held against the web by virtue of a pair of studs 36 which project through slots 31 in the cutter-bar. Secured to the root of the cutter-bar is a bifurcated and upstanding bearing 38 to which is secured the connecting rod 39, the other end of said connecting rod being secured to the crank assembly 4!] operated by the aforesaid pulley l3.
Secured for rotation to the horizontal members 4| of my framework by means of the bolt assemblies 42 are sector plate 43, the same being semi-circularly slotted as at 44 to receive the nutted bolt assemblies 45, the bolts whereof are welded or otherwise secured to the members 4| and project therefrom to the said slot. Positioned between the assemblies 42 and the slots 44 are axles 46 designed to receive ground wheels, and upon adjustment of the plates 43 about the assemblies 42 in either direction, it will be obvious that my framework may be raised or lowered.
At the junction of the members 2, it will be noted that I have provided a front end supporting assembly 4! comprising a small ground wheel 48 and bearing 49 therefor. By substitution of a longer or shorter supporting shaft 50 the front end may be raised or lowered in conformity with the rear end via the aforesaid sector plates 43. Obviously however, other means for adjusting the height of the front end may be resorted to as desired for the purpose in view.
Since many modifications can be made in the invention herein described and since the accompanying drawings have been prepared only to illustrate the relative arrangement and interaction of parts and not with regard to accuracy of dimensions for manufacturing purposes which in view of this disclosure I consider to entail merely mechanical skill together with the skill of the mechanical draftsman, and since many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention may be made within the scope of the accompanying claim without departing from the spirit and scope of the same it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense and I desire only such limitations placed thereon as justice dictates.
What I claim as my invention is:
A brush cutting implement comprising in combination a wheel mounted, tractor-drawn framework, a cutter assembly including a cutter-bar 4 projecting from one side of said framework, means for operating said cutter-bar, means for adjusting the angle of inclination of said bar with respect to the horizontal, and through a vertical plane normal to the implements direction of travel and for raising and lowering the same within the range of its angular adjustment and within said plane consisting of a pair of substantially vertically disposed, screw-threaded and rotatable rods, said cutter assembly being supported from the lower ends of said rods by self-aligning bearings, said rods being also mounted in selfaligning hearings on either side of said framework, said means for operating said cutter-bar comprising a power take-off shaft having a pulley thereon, and, in combination therewith, a pulley on said cutter assembly, and an adjustable tightener pulley on said framework for maintaining a belt extending around said two first mentioned pulleys taut regardless of the position or angle of said cutter assembly.
