IINTTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT Gr. SHANNON, OF SANTA RQSA, CALIFORNIA.
TYPE-WRITER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,890, dated November 1, 1881,
Application filed August 25, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT G. SHANNON, of Santa Rosa, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writers; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is av full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reterencebeinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1' is a perspective view of the machine; Fig. 2, details oflettcr and lever for carrying the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged 'fragmentary view ofan arm, showing the end hold ing the type, partly in section, the same illustrating the manner in which the type-casing is inserted into said arm, also disclosing, by dotted lines, the puncturing-points inserted into and projecting from the cement which is contained in the casing. Fig. 4. is an enlarged fragmentary view of the arm, showing a section through the set-screw that holds the type in the recess of the arm. v
The letter A is a casing for a letter; A, the cylinder. B represents one of the keys. U is an operating-lever, carrying a letter; D, machine prel'erred. The letter 1) represents the points forming letter; 0, screw for holding lettefiii arm or operating-lever (3.
My invention relates to typewriters; and it consists of a type composed of a metallic casing, havingfigures, letters, orcharactersformed of sharp puncturing-points, of equal length, projecting from said casing. The casingis filled with cement or other suitable material when in a proper state of consistency, and the rear end of the puncturing-points inserted therein. The face otf the type, which is composed of perforating-pointsTshould project evenly outside the casing, all of which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to perforate paper similar to the product of an electric pen. I obtain this result by employing the mechanism of an ordinary type-writer, with the exception of the inked ribbon and type. These are dispensed with. The cylinder may have theordinaryt'orm; but itshould becoustructed of cork, rubber, or other suitable material, which willprotectthepointedlettersthat strike into it while perforating the paper.
The original copy made by my improvement may be read quite as easily as it printed with ink. It' produces in the paper what I wish to term a stencil, from which, if desired, several hundred copies'may be taken, as from the impressions made from punctured paper produced by the electric pen. This is attainedby the use of certain elements contained in the type-writer and electric pen. It. possess-es advantages over the former from the fact that numerous copies may be made from the paper perforated by the letter-points, while it may be operated as easily and rapidly. It also pos sesses advantages over the electric pen, insomuch as it prints its letters instead of writing them, and, further, it requires no battery.
The type used by me is composed of ashell, of any desired shape, filled with wax, cement, or other matter which will hold the puncturingpoints, representing figures, letters, and punctuation-marks. The type are inserted into the operating-arms, (shown in 0,) and held firmly in position by screw 0. The type may also be held by rivet.
Having thus described my invention, [claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A type constructed ofa metallic casing filled with cement, into which are inserted sharp points to represent a character, said type being attached to a movable arm of a type-writer by means of a recess and set-screw in said arm, substantially as described, and For the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT G. SHANNON.
