Description
Nmh 1949 s. J. BROCHSTEIN 9 9 GARMENT HANGER ROD Filed June 22, 1945 Patented Nov. 2 2, 194 9 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT HANGER ROD sam J. Bmctstih, Houston, Tex) Application June 22, 1945; Serial No. 600,913 3 Claims. (01. 21'1' 123 This invention relates to garment display cases, and more particularlyto a removable garment hanger rod for such cases.
It is the primary object of the invention to provide in garment display cases a hanger rod that is removable so that replacement, relocation, or repair of the rod may be had.
Another object is to provide a garment hanger rod that may be installed in either existing display cases or in new equipment. v
Still another object is to provide a garfent hanger rod that is removabl ysupported irisoekets having inner surfaces which are flush with the interior walls of the garment display case.
A still further object is to provide a garment hanger rod in which one end receives a compression spring for engagement within a socket to urge the rod to a supporting position in opposed sockets.
Still another object is to provide a hanger rod having a projection on one end thereof, and a cooperating end plate having a slot to receive such projection whereby the rod may be rotated after entering such plate and thereby restrain from removal except when the projection and slot are in mating relation.
The foregoing objects are primary objects which together with additional objects and advantages of the invention will be more fully apparent from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view partly in section of a garment display case in which a hanger rod embodying the invention is installed;
Fig. 2 is a detail showing the interlocking feature between the rod and one of the sockets in which the rod is mounted.
The embodiment shown in the drawings comprises a garment display case I having top 2 which overlies the side walls 3 and 4 of the case. In the walls 3 and 4, and in opposed relation, there are provided sockets 5 and 6 in which the garment hanger rod 1 is to be mounted. It is to be understood that a plurality of these sockets may be provided in a given case so that the rod 1, or a plurality of such rods, may be selectively located within the case I. V
The socket 5 comprises a counterbore l0 in the wall and an end plate H having an opening I 2 to receive the end 43 of the rod 1. In one form of the invention and in order to provide a positive interlock which will prevent withdrawal of the end !3 from within the end plate II, the invention contemplates the provision of a radial pin 14 in the end l3 of the rod I, and the projecting portion of the pin is adapted to enter the slot l Eat one side' of the opening 12.
The socket 6 at the opposite end of the rod 1 comprises counterbore' l6 which is slightly deeper than the'counterbore It to serve a purpose that will more fully appear.- This counterbore is closed by means of end plate 11 which,. similar to end plate 5 l, has a circular opening I8 to receive the end IQ of the rod 1.
The end It is provided :with a compression spring Sil suitably located-in the end of the rod as by means of. the pin 21 passing transversely throu-gl'r the rod: and anchored: therein. The outer end of this spring extends beyond the end of the rod 1, and is normally under compression by engagement with the bottom of the socket [6 whereby the rod 1 is urged to the left as viewed in the drawings.
The installation and utilization of the garment hanger rod as above described is believed to be apparent from the description. By way of reiteration and clarification it will be assumed that the rod is in position as shown in Fig. 1, and that removal thereof is desired for such purposes as relocation, refinishing of the rod, or replacement by a new rod. The rod is manually rotated until the pin or projection I4 is in mating relation with the slot l5 in the end plate 5. The rod 1 is then urged to the rightwhereby the spring 20 is compressed as the end l3 of the rod leaves the opening I 2 in the end plate II. The rod end I3 is then moved sidewardly and the opposite end 19 may be withdrawn from within the socket 6.
Replacement of the rod is the reverse to the operation just described. The end i9 is first inserted in the socket 6, and the end I 3 is thereafter permitted to enter the opening I2 under influence of the spring 20 when proper alignment is effected. The rod 1 may then be manually rotated through any suitable angle, and in this manner accidental removal of the end I 3 from :within the socket 5 is avoided.
It is to be noted that the hanger rod 1 is normally held in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When, however, a plurality of garments are hanging upon the rod, and it is de- "sired to slide a group of such garments along the rod as viewed in the drawings, there is a possibility of compressing the spring 20 and thereby accidentally releasing the end I3 of the rod from within the socket 5. For this reason it is desired in most instances to provide an interlocking connection of the end l3 within the socket 5. For this reason suitable means such as the pin and slot connection heretofore described is provided to prevent such accidental withdrawal of the end of the rod from within the socket 5.
Broadly the invention comprehends a garment hanger rod for display cases so constructed and arranged that the sockets therefor provide flush surfaces within the display case, and the rod may be readily removed from such sockets.
What is claimed is:
1. In a removable garment hanger rod for display purposes, a hanger rod, spaced supporting members provided with a pair of opposed sockets, an end plate covering each of said sockets, each of said end plates having an opening to receive one end of the rod, a compression spring mounted in and extending outwardly from one end of said rod adapted to pass through the opening in one of said end plates and enter to the bottom of said socket, said rod being of a length to thereafter enter the other of the sockets and to span the distance between the end plates.
2. In a display case spaced supporting members having opposed paired sockets therein, a hanger rod, a compression spring mounted in and extending from one end of the rod, an end plate covering each of the sockets, each of said end plates having an opening to receive an end of the rod, said rod being of a length to enter to the bottom of one socket under the influence of the spring and to span the distance between the end plates.
3. In a display case spaced supporting members having opposed paired sockets therein, a hanger rod, a radial projection on one end of the rod, a compression spring mounted within and extending outwardly of the other end of the rod,
whereby said rod may be rotated and retained in the end plates after insertion in the opening therein.
